Book excerpt: "The report, 'Make It Safe: Canada's Obligation to End the First Nations Water Crisis,' documents the impacts of serious and prolonged drinking water and sanitation problems for thousands of indigenous people--known as "First Nations"--living on reserves. It assesses why there are problems with safe water and sanitation on reserves, including a lack of binding water quality regulations, erratic and insufficient funding, faulty or sub-standard infrastructure, and degraded source waters. The federal government's own audits over two decades show a pattern of overpromising and underperforming on water and sanitation for reserves"--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Eau Canada written by Karen Bakker and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the sustainability of our natural resources is increasingly questioned, Canadians remain stubbornly convinced of the unassailability of our water. Mounting evidence suggests, however, that Canadian water is under threat. Eau Canada assembles the country's top water experts to discuss our most pressing water issues. Perspectives from a broad range of thinkers - geographers, environmental lawyers, former government officials, aquatic and political scientists, and economists - reflect the diversity of concerns in water management. Arguing that weak governance is at the heart of Canada's water problems, this timely book identifies our key failings, explores debates over jurisdiction, transboundary waters, exports, and privatization, and maps out solutions for protecting our most important resource.

Book Synopsis Salt Water Neighbors by : Ted L. McDorman
Download or read book Salt Water Neighbors written by Ted L. McDorman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and Canada are salt water neighbors on the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Despite the general closeness of the political, economic and social relationship, the two States have approached their offshore areas from different perspectives. Canada has long supported expansion of exclusive national control over its adjacent offshore; whereas the United States has been concerned with the balance between national authority and international navigation rights. Canada has tended to view maritime disputes with the United States as local matters; whereas the United States has tended to see the disputes with Canada in global terms. Against this background, Salt Water Neighbor's examines both the international ocean law disagreements that exist between the United States and Canada respecting maritime boundaries, fisheries and navigation rights (e.g., the Northwest Passage) and the numerous cooperative bilateral arrangements that have prevented these disputes from being significant causes of friction between the neighbors. There has not been a comprehensive book-length study of United States-Canada international ocean relations since the early 1970s. Much has changed in the last 30 years. Most importantly, the law and the nature of the disputes between the two States have changed as a result of the adoption of 200 nautical mile zones in the late 1970s.

Book Synopsis Hydraulic Modelling of the Peace-Athabasca Delta Under Modified and Natural Flow Conditions by : Bill Aitken
Download or read book Hydraulic Modelling of the Peace-Athabasca Delta Under Modified and Natural Flow Conditions written by Bill Aitken and published by The Study. This book was released on 1994 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction of the Bennett Dam in British Columbia altered natural fluctuations of downstream flows in the Peace River in Alberta, with major implications for the ecosystem of the Peace-Athabasca Delta. In later years, downstream weirs were constructed to restore the water level regime in the Delta. This report presents the results of a modelling exercise undertaken in an attempt to assess the effect of the weirs and the dam on the Delta water levels during 1985-90, at which time Lake Athabasca water levels were low and it was not clear whether the weirs were functioning properly or if the low water levels were caused by low flows coming from the upper Peace and Athabasca river basins. The methodology uses a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model, suitably modified and calibrated. The appendices include numerous plots of water levels indicating the effects of the weirs and dam on natural conditions.
