Book Synopsis Selection of Alkali Sacaton Maternal Lineages as Competitors with Russian Knapweed and Canada Thistle by : Franklin P. Bartlett
Download or read book Selection of Alkali Sacaton Maternal Lineages as Competitors with Russian Knapweed and Canada Thistle written by Franklin P. Bartlett and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions between native and introduced plant species have been extensively studied but few studies examine co-existence and contemporary evolution of individual native grasses with introduced invasive weed species. We examine maternal lineages of Sporobolus airoides Torr. (Alkali sacaton) obtained from within (IN) invaded patches of Acroptilon repens L. (Centaurea repens, Russian knapweed) and from outside (OUT) of invaded patches. We synthesize the results of several experiments to assess the potential of individual maternal lineages to compete with invasive weeds. We developed a Biological Screening Process (BSP) to assess and categorize the competitiveness of grass maternal lineages based on their performance in a series of greenhouse and field experiments. The BSP allowed us to place the maternal lineages into three relative competitor categories (strong, moderate, and unlikely). We hypothesize that seedlings of maternal lineages placed into strong and moderate competitor categories should demonstrate greater germination and primary root growth than seedlings of maternal lineages from the unlikely competitor category. We examine seed germination and primary root growth of the maternal lineages using two field- produced seed sources (2006, 2007). Germination of IN and OUT seeds harvested in 2007 differed by sample day. Cumulative primary root growth measured over nine sample days did not differ among IN and OUT seeds. Cluster analysis of germination (%) placed maternal lineages into three groups that we compared to BSP competitor categories. Germination of S. airoides appears to provide some indication of competitive ability in maternal lineages. The notion that individual native grass maternal lineages undergo selective regimes that promote competitive success against invasive species requires additional testing. Identifying competitive maternal lineages may allow for improved restoration effectiveness in areas subjected to exotic populations.
Book Synopsis Weeds of California and Other Western States by : Joseph M. DiTomaso
Download or read book Weeds of California and Other Western States written by Joseph M. DiTomaso and published by UCANR Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 979 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedic yet easy-to-use 2-volume set covers 262 individual entries, including a full description of 451 species and another 361 plants compared as similar species, representing 63 plant families. 13 shortcut identification tables for groups that share similar, unusual, or relatively uncommon characteristics. 2 grass identification keys - a key to all characteristics including inflorescences and reproductive parts and a key to vegetative characteristics only. 67 tables comparing important characteristics of difficult-to-distinguish weedy species. Color photos of over 700 weeds including seeds, seedlings, flowers, and mature plants. Appendix of non-native plants rarely or occasionally naturalized in California. Glossary of botanical terms. Bibliography of some of the most pertinent publications. Index to common names, scientific names, and synonyms. Each entry describes the plant category, family name, common name, and synonyms along with a summary of the important aspects of the plant’s life cycle, size, growth form, impact, method of introduction, and toxicity. You'll also find a description of the seedling, mature plant, roots and underground structures, flowers, fruits and seeds, spikelets and florets, spore-bearing structures, and post senescence characteristics for each entry. Also includes a description of the habitat where each is typically found and distribution in California, other states, and worldwide, along with maximum elevation at which the species is found. Rounding out each entry is a description of the methods of reproduction, seed dispersal, germination requirements and conditions, seed survival and longevity, early establishment characteristics and requirements, cultural practices and management options that have proven effective or ineffective in controlling infestations, and a notation of the species' inclusion on federal or state noxious weed lists.
