Download or read book The Story of the Canadian People (Classic Reprint) written by David Merritt Duncan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Canadian People The aim of this book is to tell the story of our country simply, yet without sacrificing historical con tent to simplicity. The story is one of colonisation. It tells of failure and success; of French failure through the folly of absolutism, monopoly, and feudalism; of British success through the wisdom of self-government, freedom, and equality. Canada's past is richly stored with those picturesque incidents which make history fascinating as well as instructive. From the blunders of the French crown and the greed of chartered com panics, the reader turns with pleasure to the deeds of martial governors, devoted missionaries, and freedom loving coure'urs de while, later on, his mind finds relief from the serious problems of autonomy and union in the simple scenes of pioneer life, and in the adven tures of explorer or fur-trader of the West, where the romance of earlier days still lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Northwest as It Is Today For the benefit of others who might come over this route, let me say, our tickets from El Paso, Texas to Calgary, Canada, cost us sixty-two dollars each. But if we had bought them by way of Los angeles-san Francisco, then by steamboat to Vancouver, B. C.. By way of Seattle, it would have been about fifteen dollars cheaper, each. And that way we should have got to, see enough of California to judge what it was like. Then we would have got out of sight of land, at sea on the way up the coast, and got an idea what an ocean voyage would be like - maybe got seasick. Then at Vancouver we would lave taken the same train that we took at Mission Junc tion, Canadian Pacific. East bound.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada Geography plays such an influential part in the past story and the present condition of that long string of British North American provinces which, stretching right across North America, now comprise the Dominion of Canada, that some preliminary indication of its character seems indispensable here. The shape of the Dominion is, in short, unique among countries - among those at least which count for much in our modern civilization. It has affected its history in the past so vitally and influences all its political, commercial, and social considerations so strongly to-day, that a general idea of its physical characteristics seems vital to a proper understanding of its past and present conditions. Book Synopsis Queen's and Canada (Classic Reprint) by : Robert Bruce Taylor
Download or read book Queen's and Canada (Classic Reprint) written by Robert Bruce Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen's and Canada Co-education, so far as university life in Canada is con cerned, began in Queen's. Women were admitted, to begin with, to the Faculty of Arts. The question then arose why they should not be allowed to study Medicine. The thing had not hitherto been done in Canada, but it was done here. The very novelty of the scheme attracted a singularly able group of women. There were, however, difficulties not a few in the carry ing on of a medical school for men and women where the schoolitself was small. Consequently, when the University of Toronto opened the doors of its medical faculty to women, Queen's decided to restrict its work in this field to men. The Extra-mural system, which has been of such benefit to teachers throughout the Dominion, began almost by accident. Students with the long summer vacation before them used to ask their professors for guidance in their reading. Gradually this counsel came to be increasingly important till the question arose, as to whether credit might not be given for such reading provided the student possessed the necessary academic require ments for entering upon a course of university study, followed the University curriculum in his reading, and passed the same examinations as the student attending the classes in Queen's. The idea was not in itself new. London University had shown the Way. But the conditions in Canada made the problem largely new, and the regulations governing it have been modified con siderably as the result of the long years of trial. The system, however, has been of the greatest value to the Dominion. Every where one meets men in high positions in the educational world who received their opportunity through the Extra-mural system. We are out Of reach of Sunday School and friends - tell me of a book which will give my girl a wider outlook, which will open her eyes to her chances in life. Download or read book Wake Up, Canada written by C. W. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wake Up, Canada: Reflections on Vital National Issues My Dear Fellow Craftsmen, It is usual to dedicate a book to some person or persons to whom the author is under obligation. There can be no question in my mind where my deepest obligation rests. Much of whatever information I possess, I might almost say, that much of whatever useful education I possess, is due to a habit, acquired early in my life, of reading a wide range of newspapers and periodicals. There I have gleaned the worth-while facts, that largely have guided my business and journalistic career. I entertain the hope, perhaps vainly, that this little volume may prove of some inspiration to you, entrusted as you are with the responsible task of moulding public opinion. I cannot hope, and do not expect, that all my conclusions and theories will receive approval and support. Some of them will appear weird and visionary. But my main object in writing this somewhat rambling book has been to provoke investigation. Somewhere you may find the kernel of an idea that may lend itself to profitable elaboration. If so, my task has not been in vain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First of all these lessons comes - trust in God. A man who does not love God may love his country; but the true patriot is always the true Christian.
