Book Synopsis Immigrant Settlement Policy in Canadian Municipalities by : Erin Tolley

This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a great many in-depth interviews with government officials and front-line workers, contributors provide a comparative assessment of approaches to immigrant settlement in nineteen Canadian municipalities. This is complemented by a discussion of the federal government's role in this policy field, and by a comprehensive introduction and conclusion, which ground the book historically and thematically, synthesize its key findings, and provide recommendations for addressing the challenges related to intergovernmental cooperation, settlement service delivery, and overall immigrant outcomes. Individual chapters examine the mechanics of public policy-making but also tell a story about diverse and innovative approaches to immigrant settlement in Canada's towns and cities, about gaps and problems in the system, and about the ways in which governments and communities are working together to facilitate integration. Contributors include Zainab Amery (Carleton University), Caroline Andrew (University of Ottawa), Guy Chiasson (Université du Québec en Outaouais), Rodney Haddow (University of Toronto), Rachida Abdourhamane Hima (Government of Canada), Christine Hughes (Carleton University), Serena Kataoka (University of Victoria), Junichiro Koji (University of Ottawa), Warren Magnusson (University of Victoria), Daiva Stasiulis (Carleton University), Erin Tolley (Queen's University), and Robert Young (University of Western Ontario).
Book Synopsis Responding to Immigrants' Settlement Needs: The Canadian Experience by : Robert Vineberg
Download or read book Responding to Immigrants' Settlement Needs: The Canadian Experience written by Robert Vineberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written about Canada’s modern settlement program and there is a growing body of research and analysis of the settlement and integration successes and challenges of recent years, there is virtually no literature that has addressed the history of settlement services since the beginning of immigration to Canada. Some survey histories of Canadian Immigration have touched on elements of settlement policy but no history of services to immigrants in Canada has been published heretofore. Responding to Immigrants’ Settlement Needs: The Canadian Experience addresses this gap in the historiography of Canadian Immigration. From the tentative steps taken by the pre-Confederation colonies to provide for the needs of arriving immigrants, often sick and destitute, through the provision of accommodation and free land to settlers of a century ago, to today’s multi-faceted settlement program, this book traces a fascinating history that provides an important context to today’s policies and practices. It also serves to remind us that those who preceded us did, indeed, care for immigrants and did much to make them feel welcome in Canada. The Canadian experience in integration, over the past two centuries, suggests many policy-related research themes for further exploration both in Canada and in other immigrant receiving countries.
Book Synopsis Canada in Cities by : Katherine A.H. Graham
Download or read book Canada in Cities written by Katherine A.H. Graham and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government and its policies transform Canadian cities in myriad ways. Canada in Cities examines this relationship to better understand the interplay among changing demographics, how local governments and citizens frame their arguments for federal action, and the ways in which the national government uses its power and resources to shape urban Canada. Most studies of local governance in Canada focus on politics and policy within cities. The essays in this collection turn such analysis on its head, by examining federal programs, rather than municipal ones, and observing how they influence local policies and work with regional authorities and civil societies. Through a series of case studies - ranging from federal policy concerning Aboriginal people in cities, to the introduction of the federal gas tax transfer to municipalities, to the impact of Canada's emergency management policies on cities - the contributors provide insights about how federal politics influence the local political arena. Analyzing federal actions in diverse policy fields, the authors uncover meaningful patterns of federal action and outcome in Canadian cities. A timely contribution, Canada in Cities offers a comprehensive study of diverse areas of municipal public policy that have emerged in Canada in recent years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of this major work provides a systematic, comparative assessment of the efforts of a selection of major countries, including the U.S., to deal with immigration and immigrant issues— paying particular attention to the ever-widening gap between their migration policy goals and outcomes. Retaining its comprehensive coverage of nations built by immigrants and those with a more recent history of immigration, the new edition pays particular attention to the tensions created by post-colonial immigration, and explores how countries have attempted to control the entry and employment of legal and illegal Third World immigrants, how they cope with the social and economic integration of these new waves of immigrants, and how they deal with forced migration.

Book Synopsis How Ottawa Spends, 2011–2012 by : Christopher Stoney

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading scholars from across Canada examine a new era of "life under the knife" in the context of the Harper agenda after five years in power, the partisan calculus of a minority Parliament, and a deep global recession still in crisis mode. Given the budget-related pressure for an election, the book poses questions about the degree to which the budget agenda involves the political arts of "trimming fat" versus "slicing the pork" of partisan spending. Several closely linked political, policy, and spending realms are examined, including economic stimulus, environmental assessment, energy and climate change, health care, science and technology, immigration, and northern strategy (including affordable housing). Related governance issues such as the use of new media, regulatory budget cuts, Industry Canada as an economic regulator, and federal compensation costs are also discussed in detail. Contributors include Frances Abele (Carleton University), Caroline Andrew (University of Ottawa), Vandna Bhatia (Carleton University), Neil Bradford (University of Western Ontario), Francois Bregha (Statos), David Castle (University of Edinburgh), G. Bruce Doern (Carleton University and University of Exeter), Nick Falvo (Carleton University), Mary Francoli (Carleton University), Ruth Hubbard (University of Ottawa), Derek Ireland (Carleton University), James Lahey (University of Ottawa), Douglas Macdonald (University of Toronto), Eric Milligan (Regulatory Consulting Group Inc, Ottawa), Leslie A. Book Synopsis Neoliberal Contentions by : Lois Harder
Download or read book Neoliberal Contentions written by Lois Harder and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-12-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, neoliberalism has had a major impact on social life and, in turn, research in the social sciences. Emerging from the crisis of the Keynesian welfare state, neoliberalism describes a social transformation that has impacted relationships between citizens and the state, consumers and the market, and individuals and groups. Neoliberal Contentions offers original essays that explore neoliberalism in its various guises. It includes chapters on economic policy and restructuring, resource extraction, multiculturalism and equality, migration and citizenship, health reform, housing policy, and 2SLGBTQ communities. Drawing on the work of influential Canadian political economist Janine Brodie, the contributors use Brodie’s scholarship as a springboard for their own distinct analyses of pressing political and social issues. Acknowledging neoliberalism’s crises, failures, and contradictions, this collection contends with neoliberalism by "diagnosing the present," situating the phenomenon within a broader historical and political-economic context and observing instances in which neoliberal rationality is reinforced as well as resisted.

Book Synopsis New Perspectives on Gender and Migration by : Nicola Piper
Download or read book New Perspectives on Gender and Migration written by Nicola Piper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses recent theoretical and empirical developments in international migration from a gender perspective. Its main objective is to analyse the diversification and stratification of gendered migratory streams with regard to skill level, labour market integration, and legal status. In turn a migrant’s position in relation to these axes influences access to entitlements and rights. Conceptually, the book builds upon the recent shift in scholarly research on migration, with women-centred research shifting more toward the analysis of gender. Migration is now viewed as a gendered phenomenon that requires more sophisticated theoretical and analytical tools than sex as a dichotomous variable. Theoretical formulations of gender as relational, and as spatially and temporally contextual have begun to inform gendered analyses of migration. The contributions to this book elaborate in more detail the broader social factors that influence migrating women’s and men’s roles, access to resources, facilities and services. Empirically, all major regions are discussed, pointing to common trends such as the increasing significance of the regionalization of migration flows as well as some noteworthy differences.
