Difficulty - not only in getting job - but also in adapting to the big differences between academic and work life. This book is supposed to become a trusted companion of a young student as he stands on this eventful transition from college to work. It differentiates itself from other books in this genre at least in two prominent ways. Firstly, it will help the reader not only prepare for the recruitment process but also cope with the challenges in the first few years at work. Secondly, unlike most other books in this genre, this book doesn't solely depend on personal experiences of the author, but also draws learning from the recent researches in the areas of neuroscience, psychology, and management science. Another interesting aspect of the book is numerous easy but powerful tools and formats for ready application in the field. This book is a must read for students in colleges as also for the fresh employees in their first year at work. #v&spublishers

Book excerpt: The university, as a core institution of democratic society, is increasingly threatened by the intrusion of big business. Campus, Inc. not only describes the threat of corporatization, but provides real-life strategies, campaigns, and solutions to the problem. A new era of student activism has rolled back the sale of sweatshop-produced items in campus stores; the re-emergence of unions has helped faculty organize to prevent "hostile takeovers" of our publicly funded institutions; and effective strategies to redemocratize the university are increasingly available.

Book excerpt: Being in a professional industry, hiring the right people for the job was the biggest challenge we used to face each day. During these days (and even now), I have hired close to 7000 people for various jobs over a period of 25+ years and continue to do so. Making decision on hiring someone is a big decision. It can make or break someone's career and life, but yet you have to take a rationale decision without bringing emotions into play basis what's right for the job and also what's right for the individual.I have met so many candidates, some just out of college, some with few years of experience. I could see their eyes radiate with hope and expectations while at the same time they had the fear of how they will fare at the interview. Most of the time the fear took over the better part of them and it became more aggravated when they could not answer a question. The second challenge I faced was nurturing the hired persons to perform to their job's expectations, guiding them through the years, ensuring customers' expectations are met while making sure their careers progress. Identifying skills that need improvement, or lacking, providing training to upgrade those skills, giving on the job guidance, etc etc. And then the third challenge comes when the person wants to leave and take another job. Some would state personal reasons, many would say better prospects and most of the time it felt to be an impulsive decision based on some short-term gains. Yet providing them the right guidance, ensuring that our customer services are impacted minimal at the same time guiding them to see that they are taking the right step of leaving and joining some other place.During all these challenges, the biggest challenge that we as managers faced was to strike the right balance without bias between the job as a manager to deliver the right results for the company and to give the right nurturing, guidance and career progression to our team members.Every time I used to make a hiring decision, or provide guidance to my team or have the difficult discussion around a person leaving, there was only one question that always came to my mind"What can I do to ease the process of transition from campus to a corporate world for fresh graduates, how can I nurture their careers such that they can grow faster and in a planned manner, how can I help them make their career decisions more effectively."During this process over 3 decades, I underwent a lot of learning and again only one question came back to me again and again. " I wished I had known this before when I started my first job.".You are now making a transition from your Campus to the Corporate World. The Campus prepared you for today, and the Corporate will provide you an environment to achieve your dreams. This book is an attempt to guide you early on, on what to expect, how to deal with various situations, how to build alignment to your job, your manager, your mentor and achieve your dreams faster and with lesser conflicts. This book is for those who want to Standout instead of just fit-in.I hope you enjoy reading this book, but more importantly imbibing the learning slowly but firmly.Thank YouMy Binoculars

From flagship public research universities to small, private liberal arts colleges, there are few aspects of these institutions associated with more confusion, myths or lack of understanding than how they fund themselves and function in the business of higher education. Using simple, approachable explanations supported by clear illustrations, this book takes the reader on an engaging and enlightening tour of how the money flows. Grounded in hard data, original analyses, and the practical experience of a seasoned administrator, this book provides refreshingly clear answers and comprehensive insights for anyone on or off campus who is interested in the business of the university: how it earns its money, how it spends it, and how it all works.

Book excerpt: How business appropriated the pastoral landscape, as seen in the corporate campus, the corporate estate, and the office park. By the end of the twentieth century, America's suburbs contained more office space than its central cities. Many of these corporate workplaces were surrounded, somewhat incongruously, by verdant vistas of broad lawns and leafy trees. In Pastoral Capitalism, Louise Mozingo describes the evolution of these central (but often ignored) features of postwar urbanism in the context of the modern capitalist enterprise. These new suburban corporate landscapes emerged from a historical moment when corporations reconceived their management structures, the city decentralized and dispersed into low-density, auto-dependent peripheries, and the pastoral—in the form of leafy residential suburbs—triumphed as an American ideal. Greenness, writes Mozingo, was associated with goodness, and pastoral capitalism appropriated the suburb's aesthetics and moral code. Like the lawn-proud suburban homeowner, corporations understood a pastoral landscape's capacity to communicate identity, status, and right-mindedness. Mozingo distinguishes among three forms of corporate landscapes—the corporate campus, the corporate estate, and the office park—and examines suburban corporate landscapes built and inhabited by such companies as Bell Labs, General Motors, Deere & Company, and Microsoft. She also considers the globalization of pastoral capitalism in Europe and the developing world including Singapore, India, and China. Mozingo argues that, even as it is proliferating, pastoral capitalism needs redesign, as do many of our metropolitan forms, for pressing social, cultural, political, and environmental reasons. Future transformations are impossible, however, unless we understand the past. Pastoral Capitalism offers an indispensible chapter in urban history, examining not only the design of corporate landscapes but also the economic, social, and cultural models that determined their form.

Book excerpt: The emphasis on corporate universities has been a driving force in moving companies beyond a restricted approach to training, to a central vision for learning within the organization. However, there have been failures and many corporate universities have struggled to bring a business rigour to learning or to align their development with the key business and financial drivers of the organization. It is time for the Corporate University to demonstrate how business rigour, handled deftly and with strong and perceptive leadership, can revolutionize learning both inside and outside the organization. The Handbook of Corporate University Development is an important catalyst towards this process. It draws on experience from around the world, to provide anyone responsible for strategy and learning at senior levels in government, education and business with a picture of current best practice.

Book excerpt: We are wired for competition. Our education system and organizations are inherently structured in favor of competition. And yet organizations exhort us to collaborate. How do individuals navigate in an environment that places them in such a conflicting situation? The decision making criterion is more important than the decision. How do we make choices when confronted with an easy and difficult option, and the easy option 'seems' to work better. Do we have it in us to create the organization of choice - an organization where everyone would love to work? Can such an organization be the instrument of societal change? What is the genesis of competition and how does it relate to our beliefs? Can fear of failure be turned on its head to drive superior outcomes? There are wheels within wheels within wheels and the corporate environment can be quite confounding at times. Experience may make us wiser but that could take away precious time. Gaining foresight into people and organization dynamics in the realm of easy choices and a fiercely competitive world can help us resolve the dilemmas we will face on our way up the corporate ladder.
