Book excerpt: Adopting a distinctive narrative approach based on the chronology of a claim, Blackstone's Civil Practice 2013: The Commentary provides authoritative guidance on the process of civil litigation from commencement of a claim to enforcement of judgments. It addresses civil procedure in the county courts, the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court as well as more specialist matters such as insolvency proceedings, sale of goods, and human rights, providing expert analysis on a comprehensive level. The narrative commentary is supported by the comprehensive Blackstone's Civil Practice 2013 Procedural Checklists. 38 Procedural Checklists summarize the steps to be taken, and include invaluable information on documentation, time limits, and required actions, as well as applicable Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) and Practice Directions (PD) in a concise format to provide an additional research tool. Straightforward navigation is ensured by a detailed and user-friendly index as well as a quick-reference guide inside the front cover, providing an alternative point of access for those more familiar with the CPR. Written by a team of expert practitioners and academics, it is an ideal tool for those requiring quality and in-depth analysis. The text is fully referenced to the CPR and PD making the book easy to use alongside other sources at your desk as well as in court. Turn to Blackstone's for reliable commentary from a team of experts on unfamiliar points of procedure and all your research needs. You may be interested to know that The Commentary is directly taken from the established full service volume, Blackstone's Civil Practice 2013 which includes the text of the CPR and PD, Pre-Action Protocols, selected legislation, and court fees orders. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Review Office automation and associated hardware and software technologies are producing significant changes in traditional typing, printing, and publishing techniques and strategies. The long term impact of current developments is likely to be even more far reaching as reducing hardware costs, improved human-computer interfacing, uniformity through standardization, and sophisticated software facilities will all combine together to provide systems of power, capability and flexibility. The configuration of the system can be matched to the requirements of the user, whether typist, clerk, secretary, scientist, manager, director, or publisher. Enormous advances are currently being made in the areas of publication systems in the bringing together of text and pictures, and the aggregation of a greater variety of multi-media documents. Advances in technology and reductions in cost and size have produced many 'desk-top' publishing systems in the market place. More sophisticated systems are targeted at the high end of the market for newspaper production and quality color output. Outstanding issues in desk-top publishing systems include interactive editing of structured documents, integration of text and graphics, page description languages, standards, and the human-computer interface to documentation systems. The latter area is becoming increasingly important: usability by non-specialists and flexibility across application areas are two current concerns. One of the objectives of current work is to bring the production of high quality documents within the capability of naive users as well as experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pebbles are usually found only on the beach, in the liminal space between land and sea. But what happens when pebbles extend inland and create a ridge brushing against the sky? Landscape in the Longue Durée is a 4,000 year history of pebbles. It is based on the results of a four-year archaeological research project of the east Devon Pebblebed heathlands, a fascinating and geologically unique landscape in the UK whose bedrock is composed entirely of water-rounded pebbles. Christopher Tilley uses this landscape to argue that pebbles are like no other kind of stone – they occupy an especial place both in the prehistoric past and in our contemporary culture. It is for this reason that we must re-think continuity and change in a radically new way by considering embodied relations between people and things over the long term. Dividing the book into two parts, Tilley first explores the prehistoric landscape from the Mesolithic to the end of the Iron Age, and follows with an analysis of the same landscape from the eighteenth into the twenty-first century. The major findings of the four-year study are revealed through this chronological journey: from archaeological discoveries, such as the excavation of three early Bronze Age cairns, to the documentation of all 829 surviving pebble structures, and beyond, to the impact of the landscape on local economies and its importance today as a military training camp. The results of the study will inform many disciplines including archaeology, cultural and art history, anthropology, conservation, and landscape studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the impacts of anthropogenic activities increase in both magnitude and extent, biodiversity is coming under increasing pressure. Scientists and policy makers are frequently hampered by a lack of information on biological systems, particularly information relating to long-term trends. Such information is crucial to developing an understanding as to how biodiversity may respond to global environmental change. Knowledge gaps make it very difficult to develop effective policies and legislation to reduce and reverse biodiversity loss. This book explores the gap between global commitments to biodiversity conservation, and local action to track biodiversity change and implement conservation action. High profile international political commitments to improve biodiversity conservation, such as the targets set by the Convention on Biological Diversity, require innovative and rapid responses from both science and policy. This multi-disciplinary perspective highlights barriers to conservation and offers novel solutions to evaluating trends in biodiversity at multiple scales.
