Camp meeting music was described as "the creative product of participants who, when seized by the spirit of a particular sermon or prayer, would take lines from a preacher's text as a point of departure for a short, simple melody." These improvised songs, often set to popular tunes, became standard features of camp meetings and frequently led to "singing-ecstasies" among the crowds. As Anne P. Wheeler noted, camp meeting music "set the trajectory for congregational song in the United States for the next two centuries" and may have even played a role in the development of the African-American spiritual. One of many camp meetings choristers and hymn books published during the camp meeting movement, this 1844 volume features "a collection of hymns and spiritual songs, for the pious of all denominations to be sung at camp meetings, during revivals of religion, and on other occasions."
