Book Synopsis German Prisoners of War at Camp Cooke, California by : Jeffrey E. Geiger
Download or read book German Prisoners of War at Camp Cooke, California written by Jeffrey E. Geiger and published by Sunbury Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, the first great wave of Hitler’s soldier’s came to America, not as goose-stepping conquering heroes, but as prisoners of war. By the time World War II ended in 1945, more than six hundred German POW camps had sprung up across America holding a total of 371,683 POWs. One of these camps was established at the U.S. Army’s training installation Camp Cooke on June 16, 1944. The POW base camp at Cooke operated sixteen branch camps in six of California’s fifty-eight counties and is today the site of Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County. Compared to other prisoner of war camps in California, Camp Cooke generally held the largest number of German POWs and operated the most branch camps in the state. A large number of the prisoners were from Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps, as well as from other military formations. Under the terms of the Geneva Convention, the prisoners received comfortable quarters and excellent care. They filled critical wartime labor shortages inside the main Army post at Cooke and in the outlying civilian communities, performing agricultural work for which they were paid. On weekends and evenings, they enjoyed many recreational entertainment and educational opportunities available to them in the camp. For many POWs, the American experience helped reshape their worldview and gave them a profound appreciation of American democracy. This book follows the military experiences of fourteen German soldiers who were captured during the campaigns in North Africa and Europe and then sat out the remainder of the war as POWs in California. It is a firsthand account of life as a POW at Camp Cooke and the lasting impression it had on the prisoners.

Download or read book Sol LeWitt written by Lary Bloom and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating, detailed and moving account on the life and work of a truly genius artist. A must read for anyone interested in Art.” —João Leonardo, artist Sol LeWitt (1928–2007), one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, upended traditional practices of how art is made and marketed. A key figure in minimalism and conceptualism, he proclaimed that the work of the mind is much more important than that of the hand. For his site-specific work—wall drawings and sculpture in dozens of countries—he created the idea and basic plan and then hired young artists to install the pieces. Though typically enormous and intricate, the physical works held no value. The worth was in the pieces of paper that certified and described them. LeWitt championed and financially supported colleagues, including women artists brushed aside by the bullies of a male-dominated profession. Yet the man himself has remained an enigma, as he refused to participate in the culture of celebrity. Lary Bloom’s book draws on personal recollections of LeWitt, whom he knew in the last years of the artist’s life, as well as LeWitt’s letters and papers and over one hundred original interviews with his friends and colleagues, including Chuck Close, Ingrid Sischy, Philip Glass, Adrian Piper, Jan Dibbets, and Carl Andre. This absorbing chronicle brings new information to our understanding of this important artist, linking the extraordinary arc of his life to his iconic work. Includes twenty-eight illustrations. “An insightful and intimate portrait of the artist, the man and his times.” —Saul Ostrow, Founder of Critical Practices Inc.
Book Synopsis When You Come Home by : Marianne Quirk
Download or read book When You Come Home written by Marianne Quirk and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-16 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of two Wayne State University students who were separated by World War II, told through the letters that they exchanged. Robert E. Quirk and his future wife, Marianne, were both Wayne State University students when they met and fell in love in 1941, but they were quickly parted when Quirk was drafted. Decades after their marriage and the end of the war, Quirk shares the letters they exchanged during World War II. The letters in When You Come Home paint a vivid picture of the couple’s growing personal relationship alongside the politics of wartime, both overseas and on the homefront. As Quirk writes of combat in France and details reactions abroad to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Marianne describes the impact of these events back in Detroit. When You Come Home also reveals personal glimpses of life in the 1940s, as the two exchange everyday stories about their families and the cities they live in and visit, about their studies at Wayne State, and about their jobs. Quirk’s letters are presented along with commentary about his experiences at the time, giving the letters additional context and meaning. This volume also includes a foreword by former Detroit Free Press publisher Neal Shine. For readers curious about day-to-day life during World War II, When You Come Home will be a fascinating and personal glimpse into the time period.

Download or read book Laboratory of Justice written by David L. Faigman and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-06-03 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent decades, the Court has been confronted more and more by such questions of fact. Today's Court faces a range of issues - affirmative action, gay marriage, the right to die, privacy in a high-tech society, and the place of the word "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance - that all rest to some degree on science. As has been the case over the past two hundred years, many of these battles will come down to the scientific sensibilities of individual justices. To ensure our liberties in posttechnological America, Faigman argues, the Court must embrace science rather than resist it, turning to the lab as well as to precedent."--BOOK JACKET.
