Book excerpt: The Camino Provides is the ideal companion for one of the world's most unique and accessible travel adventures, highlighting the significance of the inner journey while providing a dynamic and unconventional account of life on pilgrimage in Spain walking 840 km on the ancient Camino del Norte. Part memoir, part guidebook, this deeply insightful account combines with first-hand, carefully researched and practical advice for anyone considering walking even part of the Camino de Santiago's northern route. Numbed by trauma, Cassie Childers, former coach of the Tibetan women's soccer team, drags husband James on the seven week, 830 kilometer journey because standing still might actually cause her to feel something. Social anxiety and personal demons lead an increasingly sleep-deprived James from one awkward interaction to another, until he is ready to throttle the next pilgrim he encounters. Locals whisper that the intensity experienced on the Camino is ignited by the magic of ancient ley lines pulsing across the land. Will a series of disappearances and inconceivable meetings along The Way destroy their new marriage?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Craze is the compelling story of the centuries-long U.S. fascination with the history, literature, art, culture, and architecture of Spain. Richard L. Kagan offers a stunningly revisionist understanding of the origins of hispanidad in America, tracing its origins from the early republic to the New Deal. As Spanish power and influence waned in the Atlantic World by the eighteenth century, her rivals created the “Black Legend,” which promoted an image of Spain as a dead and lost civilization rife with innate cruelty and cultural and religious backwardness. The Black Legend and its ambivalences influenced Americans throughout the nineteenth century, reaching a high pitch in the Spanish-American War of 1898. However, the Black Legend retreated soon thereafter, and Spanish culture and heritage became attractive to Americans for its perceived authenticity and antimodernism. Although the Spanish craze infected regions where the Spanish New World presence was most felt—California, the American Southwest, Texas, and Florida—there were also early, quite serious flare-ups of the craze in Chicago, New York, and New England. Kagan revisits early interest in Hispanism among elites such as the Boston book dealer Obadiah Rich, a specialist in the early history of the Americas, and the writers Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He also considers later enthusiasts such as Angeleno Charles Lummis and the many writers, artists, and architects of the modern Spanish Colonial Revival in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Spain’s political and cultural elites understood that the promotion of Spanish culture in the United States and the Western Hemisphere in general would help overcome imperial defeats while uniting Spaniards and those of Spanish descent into a singular raza whose shared characteristics and interests transcended national boundaries. With elegant prose and verve, The Spanish Craze spans centuries and provides a captivating glimpse into distinct facets of Hispanism in monuments, buildings, and private homes; the visual, performing, and cinematic arts; and the literature, travel journals, and letters of its enthusiasts in the United States.

Five years later, a few smaller trips down, married, home-owners working 8-5's they decided to leave everything behind and begin a journey that would be more than another vacation. This was to become an accomplishment and experience larger than any other either had done alone: Traveling by motorcycle from San Jose, California to the end of the world, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. With limited information published on the subject, the couple decided to document their entire journey over five months covering nearly 20,000 miles. Written in diary format, completely unedited and taken directly from their travelogue, the story is a real-time play by play account. This book can help prepare anyone who is interested in planning a similar adventure. In these pages you will find the daily log, tips on gear and motorcycles, lessons learned, and the detailed route. Each day is documented by either Mike or Amie with invaluable information for the traveler, and unfolds a story worthy of being called an adventure of a lifetime. The second edition is expanded with photos, additional FAQ and grammatical edits.

Book excerpt: The Translation judges for the National Book Awards--Richard Miller, Alastair Reid, Eliot Weinberger--cited Clayton Eshleman and Jose Rubia Barcia's translation of Cesar Vallejo's The Complete Posthumous Poetry as follows: "This, the first National Book Award to be given to a translation of modern poetry, is a recognition of Clayton Eshleman's seventeen-year apprenticeship to perhaps the most difficult poetry in the Spanish language. Eshleman and his present collaborator, Jose Rubia Barcia, have not only rendered these complex poems into brilliant and living English, but have also established a definitive Spanish test based on Vallejo's densely rewritten manuscripts. In recreating this modern master in English, they have also made a considerable addition to poetry in our language."
