Book Synopsis El Protocolo de la Miel y la frontera Dominico-Haitiana by : Arturo Féliz-Camilo
Download or read book El Protocolo de la Miel y la frontera Dominico-Haitiana written by Arturo Féliz-Camilo and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Metabolismo Cultural Como Estrategia para Preservar la Identidad Cultural y EcolÓGica written by Reinhard Senkowski and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Youth Participation in the Caribbean by : Terri-Ann Gilbert-Roberts
Download or read book Youth Participation in the Caribbean written by Terri-Ann Gilbert-Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critically examining narratives of participation in governance and development, this volume adds Caribbean voices and experiences to the global discourse on youth participation. The essays provide empirical case studies of institutions, practices and processes of youth engagement in the politics of Caribbean development, orienting the reader to the political culture of the Caribbean and the position of youth within small societies. Covering experiences at intergovernmental, national and local levels, as well as formal and informal modes of participation, it examines how young people have organised themselves or have been organised to engage with the state and with community agents in politics, public policy and activism. It illustrates the heterogeneity of youth political participation, employing multi- disciplinary, multi- level and mixed- method analyses from the fields of demography, political science, social policy, development studies and youth development. Critical themes addressed include regional governance, democratic representation, online engagement, local governance and community development. In exploring these themes, the book discusses the legitimacy and inclusiveness of governance in relation to age, gender, race, geography and socio-economic status. The findings will be useful to students, researchers and policymakers alike who are keen to improve governance and contribute to inclusive sustainable development in the Caribbean.

Book Synopsis Assimilating the Primitive by : Kelley R. Swarthout
Download or read book Assimilating the Primitive written by Kelley R. Swarthout and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Mexican nationalist rhetoric that promoted race mixing as a cultural ideal, placing it within its broader contemporary polemic between vitalist and scientific thought. Part of its analysis compares the attitudes of anthropologist Manuel Gamio and educator José Vasconcelos with those of the European primitivist D. H. Lawrence, and concludes that although Gamio and Vasconcelos made lasting contributions to the construction of popular notions of mexicanidad, their paradigms were fatally flawed because they followed European prescriptions for the development of national identity. This ultimately reinforced the belief that indigenous cultural expression must be assimilated into the dominant mestizo culture in order for Mexico to progress. Consequently, these thinkers were unsuccessful in resolving the cultural dilemma Mexico suffered in the years immediately following the Revolution.

Book Synopsis Contraband Corridor by : Rebecca Berke Galemba
Download or read book Contraband Corridor written by Rebecca Berke Galemba and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexico–Guatemala border has emerged as a geopolitical hotspot of illicit flows of both goods and people. Contraband Corridor seeks to understand the border from the perspective of its long-term inhabitants, including petty smugglers of corn, clothing, and coffee. Challenging assumptions regarding security, trade, and illegality, Rebecca Berke Galemba details how these residents engage in and justify extralegal practices in the context of heightened border security, restricted economic opportunities, and exclusionary trade policies. Rather than assuming that extralegal activities necessarily threaten the state and formal economy, Galemba's ethnography illustrates the complex ways that the formal, informal, legal, and illegal economies intertwine. Smuggling basic commodities across the border provides a means for borderland peasants to make a living while neoliberal economic policies decimate agricultural livelihoods. Yet smuggling also exacerbates prevailing inequalities, obstructs the possibility of more substantive political and economic change, and provides low-risk economic benefits to businesses, state agents, and other illicit actors, often at the expense of border residents. Galemba argues that securitized neoliberalism values certain economic activities and actors while excluding and criminalizing others, even when the informal and illicit economy is increasingly one of the poor's only remaining options. Contraband Corridor contends that security, neoliberalism, and illegality are interdependent in complex ways, yet how they unfold depends on negotiations between diverse border actors.
