Download or read book 29 Gifts (EasyRead Super Large 20pt Edition) written by Cami Walker and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age thirty-five, Cami Walker was burdened by a battle with multiple sclerosis, a chronic neurological condition that made it difficult for her to walk, work, or enjoy her life. Seeking a remedy for her depression after being hospitalized, she received an uncommon prescription from an African medicine woman: give to others for 29 days. 29 Gifts is the insightful story of the author's life change as she embraces and reflects on the naturally reciprocal process of giving and receiving. Many of Walker's gifts were simple?a phone call, spare change, a Kleenex. Yet the acts were transformative. By day 29, not only had Walker's health and happiness improved, but she had created a worldwide giving movement. The book also includes personal essays from others whose lives changed for the better by giving, plus pages for the reader to record their own journey. More than a memoir, 29 Gifts offers inspiring lessons on how a simple daily practice of altruism can dramatically alter your outlook on the world.

Book excerpt: In this book you will read how a successful man, married to a strong and beautiful woman, with a great family, who had an amazing career and lived a life that most people would die for, would come out as transgender at 63 years old. You will enjoy reading a lot of funny and interesting stories in the book. Like when she almost burned the firehouse down that she worked at, or how she snuck into the 1980 Winter Olympic USA-Soviet Union hockey game, or while rescuing someone in a raging fire the woman she was rescuing said to her, "It's about time you fuckers got here." She also recounts how as Chief Financial Officer of American Ski Company, she helped to take them public on Wall Street. Her memoir will make you think, laugh and maybe even cry. It might also leave you in amazement. You won't be bored while waiting for 66 years of her life to be told because her life hasn't been boring, but rather, very interesting. She would be hard pressed to not find something to write about in a career that included 60 jobs, occupations, businesses owned or management positions. She tells of her life journey and eventually coming out as a trans-woman to friends and family. She speaks to the amazing acceptance she has been fortunate to receive and the hurtful rejection she's experienced. She hopes it will end your curiosity as to what being transgender is all about. This story describes her raw human emotions and what it is like to hide something about yourself from family and friends for 55 years and then finally telling everyone! It has been proven to her thru this journey that people can change and reach self-actualization. Her reality has helped her to develop a personal mission statement, which is: To educate and enlighten people about the trans community by setting a good example and do so, one person at a time. She hopes that after you've read this book you will be able to say, "Cami, you succeeded."

Book Synopsis Just Another Car Factory? by : James Rinehart
Download or read book Just Another Car Factory? written by James Rinehart and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of CAMI Automotive, a unionized joint venture between General Motors and Suzuki, is the most comprehensive ever undertaken of a lean production plant. James Rinehart, Christopher Huxley, and David Robertson address a topic that has inspired fierce debate in industrial relations, sociology, labor studies, and human resource management. Heralded as a model of lean production when it opened in 1989, CAMI promised workers something different from traditional plants—a humane environment, empowerment, and cooperative labor-management relations. However, the enthusiasm workers felt during the orientation and early phases of production steadily declined, as did their involvement in participatory activities. Workers came to describe CAMI as "just another car factory." Union challenges and shopfloor resistance to key elements of the lean system grew, capped by a five-week strike in 1992. The authors attribute workers' disillusionment to lean production itself rather than to North American managers' inadequate implementation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A harrowing tale of courage, survival, determination, fellowship and the high price of covering a war . . . a master storyteller and one tough journalist.” —Tom Brokaw CBS Foreign Correspondent Kimberly Dozier shares her compelling story from being injured in Iraq to her recovery . . . shedding light on the ordeal faced by countless combat veterans and civilians. In a flash, Kimberly Dozier’s life changed. As an award-winning CBS News reporter, Dozier had devoted her career to being in the right place at the right time to capture the story. Suddenly, in the wrong place at the worst time, she became the story, as a deadly explosion tore through her team and the troops they were following, and a word spread worldwide. That Memorial Day in 2006, a routine mission ended with Dozier in a pool of blood on a Baghdad street, a victim of a car bomb that killed her team, cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan, as well as U.S. Army Captain James Alex Funkhouser and his translator. Critically injured, Dozier woke to find herself fighting first for survival, then for recovery, and finally to return to the field. Breathing the Fire tracks one woman’s relentless determination to get the story, to get it right, and to get well again after everything went wrong. The paperback was produced at the request of hospital caregivers, who find the book helps trauma patients and the families supporting them. The author’s profits go to wounded warrior charities. “A rare, personal view—with all the attention to detail a great reporter brings to bear—into an experience shared by thousands of wounded Iraq veterans.” —Dan Rather
