Book Synopsis St. Marys and Camden County by : Patricia Barefoot
Download or read book St. Marys and Camden County written by Patricia Barefoot and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001-10-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bounded on the north by the Little Satilla River from neighboring Glynn County and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, Camden County's southern boundary at the St. Marys River separates Georgia from Florida. Dating from a 1766 land grant, port of St. Marys and Camden County have faced a challenging past, present, and future. Camden's growth and development have been driven by businessmen, adventurers and opportunists, determined "wild swamp Crackers," and hardy, self-reliant, God-fearing men and women. Accompanied by Jonathan Bryan, a planter with an insatiable appetite for virgin tracts of land, Georgia's third and last Royal Governor James Wright visited Buttermilk Bluff in June 1767 and envisioned a city. St. Marys was born, and its street names reflect the surnames of the 20 founding fathers. While the county seat was removed from a quaint St. Marys on more than one occasion, today, the garden spot of Woodbine serves as the seat of county government. Formerly the rice plantation of J.K. Bedell, this small city shares a symbiotic relationship with port of St. Marys and the "City of Royal Treatment" at Kingsland. The history of the county, with its three main towns as well as the outlying, rural areas, unfolds in striking photographs from days gone by. Preserved within the pages of this treasured volume, images reveal Camden and its people in times of tragedy and triumph.
Book Synopsis Kingsland by : Dr. Patrizia Famà Stahle
Download or read book Kingsland written by Dr. Patrizia Famà Stahle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the "City of Royal Treatment," Kingsland is named for William Henry King, one of the largest landowners in southeastern Georgia in the late 1800s. On Christmas Day in 1893, the first passenger train of the Florida Central & Peninsular Railroad passed through King's property, which the railroad company called King's Land. As the railroad began to push its way southward through the plantation, King envisioned a town and set out to divide his land into a well-planned city. The center of it was the crossing of King Street and the railroad, with the city limits extending in a half-mile circle. As the railroad advanced, people began to build in and around King's Land, setting a new era in motion. Located at the center of Camden County between the cities of St. Marys and Woodbine, Kingsland has become a lovely town proud of its small-town atmosphere and city amenities. This book presents Kingsland's evolution from its founding in 1908 through the celebration of its centennial and nomination to Lovetown USA in 2012.

Book Synopsis Robert Stafford of Cumberland Island by : Mary Ricketson Bullard
Download or read book Robert Stafford of Cumberland Island written by Mary Ricketson Bullard and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Stafford of Cumberland Island offers a rare glimpse into the life and times of a nineteenth-century planter on one of Georgia's Sea Islands. Born poor, Robert Stafford (1790-1877) became the leading planter on his native Cumberland Island. Specializing in the highly valued long staple variety of cotton, he claimed among his assets more than 8,000 acres and 350 slaves. Mary R. Bullard recounts Stafford's life in the context of how events from the Federalist period to the Civil War to Reconstruction affected Sea Island planters. As she discusses Stafford's associations with other planters, his business dealings (which included banking and railroad investments), and the day-to-day operation of his plantation, Bullard also imparts a wealth of information about cotton farming methods, plantation life and material culture, and the geography and natural history of Cumberland Island. Stafford's career was fairly typical for his time and place; his personal life was not. He never married, but fathered six children by Elizabeth Bernardey, a mulatto slave nurse. Bullard's discussion of Stafford's decision to move his family to Groton, Connecticut--and freedom--before the Civil War illuminates the complex interplay between southern notions of personal honor, the staunch independent-mindedness of Sea Island planters, and the practice and theory of racial separation. In her afterword to the Brown Thrasher edition, Bullard presents recently uncovered information about a second extralegal family of Robert Stafford as well as additional information about Elizabeth Bernardey's children and the trust funds Stafford provided for them.

Book excerpt: Election 2000 and September 11th. This is a chronicle of the life-changing events that covered the period October 2000 through October 2001. A time when a foreign army of religious fanatics declared war against our economy, our military, our sovereignty, and our culture. A war, as President Bush has said, between the forces of good and evil! And it marked the moment America came of age, and truly changed forever! "God's hand was on the 2000 Florida presidential vote and recount. His intervention placed George W. Bush as America's Commander in Chief for the terrorist attack on 9-11. Judge Moroz was a witness to these events and relates them in a personal and patriotic manner." -Senator Eric Johnson, Georgia Senate Republican Leader "'Born Again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible .'-KJV Bible Politics are only as corrupt as the people of whom it consists. True American politicians are those who understand sacrifice by the denial of self for others. Such is this story written from the uncorrupted heart of a true American patriot!" -Mayor Deborah Hase, Mayor of St. Marys, Georgia "Judge Hal Moroz-Patriot and Defender of Freedom, Semper Fidelis!" -Lt. Col. Oliver North, USMC Ret.

I am asked to speak at the annual Thursday night dinner of the Submarine Veterans of WWII in November 2008. I came in at the last minute and sat down at the designated table full of submarine veterans and their wives. I was the last one to sit down. The submarine veteran next to me listens while we visit at the table for a few minutes and then turns to me and says, "What are you doing here? You don't know anything about us. You aren't a submariner. Why should you be speaking to us?" And I thought, Here we go again.
