Book Synopsis Con/texts of Persuasion by : Beatriz Penas
Download or read book Con/texts of Persuasion written by Beatriz Penas and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Con/Texts of Persuasion is a path-breaking multidisciplinary body of essays devoted to exploring how discourse--literary, but also political, religious, commercial and philosophical--draws on strategies from linguistics, pragmatics, argumentation theory, rhetoric and hermeneutics, not merely to communicate, but to induce recipients to think or to act differently than they might have otherwise. Persuasion is context- and culture-bound, a dialogue-friendly rhetoric in the hermeneutics of understanding (Gadamer) whose negation, manipulation, can serve the ends of propaganda ("Bend Sinister"); but it is also a vehicle for circumventing censure (burlesque) or for providing oratory with intertextual resonance ("I have a dream"). An appeal to emotions, values and subjectivity, persuasion can "immerse" the reader in a fictional world or it can result from the "phonosemantic" strategies of poetry and advertising. And the ways of persuasion can extend to the situatedness of interpretive context in critical discourse in its ideologically consonant vs. dissonant modes. An invaluable collection for anyone with an interest in the persuasive powers of textual communication."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Synopsis Classroom Discourse Analysis by : Frances Christie
Download or read book Classroom Discourse Analysis written by Frances Christie and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a model of classroom discourse analysis that uses systemic functional linguistic theory and associated genre theory to develop a view of classroom episodes as 'curriculum genres', some of which operate in turn as part of larger unities of work called 'curriculum macrogenres'. Drawing on Bernstein's work, Christie argues that two registers operate in pedagogic discourse: a regulative register, to do with the goals and directions of the discourse; and an instructional register, to do with the particular 'content' or knowledge at issue. Each can be shown to be realized in distinctive clusters of choices in the grammar. The operation of the regulative register determines the initiation, pacing, sequencing and evaluation of the overall pedagogic activity. The book sets out the its methodology in detail by reference to a number of classroom texts, and a range of school subjects. Overall, schools emerge as sites of symbolic control in a culture.
Book Synopsis Missionary Linguistics/Lingüística misionera by : Otto Zwartjes
Download or read book Missionary Linguistics/Lingüística misionera written by Otto Zwartjes and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-08-31 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first European missionaries arrived on other continents, it was decided that the indigenous languages would be used as the means of christianization. There emerged the need to produce grammars and dictionaries of those languages. The study of this linguistic material has so far not received sufficient attention in the field of linguistic historiography. This volume is the first published collection of papers on missionary linguistics world-wide; it represents the insights of recent research, containing an introduction and papers on methodology, meta-historiography, the historical and cultural background. The book contains studies about early-modern linguistic works written in Spanish, Portuguese, English and French, describing among others indigenous languages from North America and Australia, Maya, Quechua, Xhosa, Japanese, Kapampangan, and Visaya. Topics dealt with include: innovations of individual missionaries in lexicography, grammatical analysis, phonology, morphology, or syntax; creativity in descriptive techniques; differences and/or similarities of works from different continents, and different religious backgrounds (Catholic or Protestant).
