What kind of day will he have in school? "Calvin Can...Be Happy is a terrific way to introduce children to some very sophisticated concepts, in a way they can grasp. It is gentle and wise at the same time. Great job " CW 5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book with a great message Oct 23 2012 By Anne Reid I have a 5 year old Granddaughter and I have read a LOT of children's books. I only wish that when I was a child, someone had taught me that I actually could choose to be happy, no matter what the circumstances. If we can begin to teach our kids of today that they can choose their emotions, imagine the future that we have in store, with our new kids leading the way. Thank you, thank you, "Mama Judy" and family for this true gift to our little ones. I am delighted and I highly recommend this book. A great Christmas gift to both parents and children. Calvin Can - Be Happy 5.0 out of 5 stars Teaching children to choose happiness Oct 21 2012 By Cathryn Wellner Adults have all kinds of books, videos and workshops revolving around happiness. It's such a huge and important topic the kingdom of Bhutan has made it a measure of the country's quality life by measuring Gross National Happiness. Now parents who want to help their children understand that choosing happiness is an option have an ally. Calvin is not happy when he has to stop playing so he can get ready for school. He likes school, but at the moment he likes what he is doing even more. His grandmother, Mama, heads off a meltdown by teaching Calvin a simple, effective method for turning disappointment around. This book is the real deal, simple but not simplistic. It reads like a hug and offers a helping hand for those parenting, grandparenting or teaching children as well as for children struggling with the inevitable bumps life throws their way....

Download or read book Image and Hope written by Yaroslav Viazovski and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in biblical studies, neurosciences, and Christian philosophy of mind force theologians to reconsider the traditional concept of the immortal soul. At the same time, the concept itself tends to create axiological dualism between the bodyand the soul that in turn may lead to insufficient appreciation of the physical life in this world. A more holistic approach to the ontology of human beings is required. The aim of this study is to analyse the function of the concept of the soul in the dualistic anthropology of John Calvin and to compare it to the holistic anthropology of Karl Barth in order to answer the question of whether the transition from one to the other is possible without the loss of the functions fulfilled by the soul.

Book Synopsis Restoration through Redemption: John Calvin Revisited by : Henk van den Belt
Download or read book Restoration through Redemption: John Calvin Revisited written by Henk van den Belt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoration through Redemption offers examples of three ways in which John Calvin’s theology can be revisited: by analysis, assessment, and reception. This volume contains analyses of Calvin’s position on the trinity and on politics, as well as assessments of his theology for evolutionary biology and comparative ecclesiology. It also discusses the reception of his heritage, for instance, in North America and South Africa. The central theme in this volume is Calvin’s approach to the renewal of creation that hinges on Christ the Redeemer. One of the golden threads is Calvin’s emphasis upon the meditatio on the future life, the turning of the believer towards the eschatological perspective. Contributors include: J. Todd Billings, Johan Buitendag, Jaeseung Cha, Ernst M. Conradie, Roger Haight, I. John Hesselink, Rinse Reeling Brouwer, Philippe Theron, Henk van den Belt, Gijsbert van den Brink, Cornelis van der Kooi, J.H. (Amie) van Wyk, J.M. Download or read book John Calvin written by William J. Bouwsma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1989-03-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have credited--or blamed--Calvinism for many developments in the modern world, including capitalism, modern science, secularization, democracy, individualism, and unitarianism. These same historians, however, have largely ignored John Calvin the man. When people consider him at all, they tend to view him as little more than the joyless tyrant of Geneva who created an abstract theology as forbidding as himself. This volume, written by the eminent historian William J. Bouwsma, who has devoted his career to exploring the larger patterns of early modern European history, seeks to redress these common misconceptions of Calvin by placing him back in the proper historical context of his time. Eloquently depicting Calvin's life as a French exile, a humanist in the tradition of Erasmus, and a man unusually sensitive to the complexities and contradictions of later Renaissance culture, Bouwsma reveals a surprisingly human, plausible, ecumenical, and often sympathetic Calvin. John Calvin offers a brilliant reassessment not only of Calvin but also of the Reformation and its relationship to the movements of the Renaissance.

In this context the book shows that humanity lives the Christian life as they seek to fulfill their calling to royal priesthood in Christ in union with his death and resurrection.

Download or read book Calvin's Passion for the Church and the Holy Spirit written by David S. Chen and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Look at John Calvin John Calvin was born in France in 1509. He was one of the greatest church reformers of the sixteenth century. At age twenty-seven, he published the first edition of his Institutes of the Christian Religion. He went to Geneva to do his difficult but epoch-making Christian work in 1536 and died in 1564. He preached and lectured more than four hundred times each year, and produced fifty-nine volumes of the Calvini Opera. In addition to being a great theologian he was a serious church worker who, with complete self-dedication, persistently labored for the effectiveness of the mission of the Church with his great passion to follow the direction of the Holy Spirit. Here the author provides rich materials for people to understand how and why Calvin was so passionate about the success of the mission of the Church and the necessity of following the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Author David S. Chen, B.Th., B.D., Th.M., S.T.M., Th.D., was a professor of systematic theology, Christian ethics, and world religions at Taiwan Theological Seminary in Taipei, Taiwan. Towards the end of his teaching he was its president. Afterwards, he served the First Reformed Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey for twenty years. After his retirement, he continued to preach for many Christian congregations. Currently, he and his musician wife, Margaret are active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Easton, Pennsylvania. Their grown children are Shirley and John, and their grandchildren are Jeffrey and Victoria.
Download or read book Calvin written by Bruce Gordon and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the glory days of the French Renaissance, young John Calvin (1509-1564) experienced a profound conversion to the faith of the Reformation. For the rest of his days he lived out the implications of that transformation—as exile, inspired reformer, and ultimately the dominant figure of the Protestant Reformation. Calvin's vision of the Christian religion has inspired many volumes of analysis, but this engaging biography examines a remarkable life. Bruce Gordon presents Calvin as a human being, a man at once brilliant, arrogant, charismatic, unforgiving, generous, and shrewd. The book explores with particular insight Calvin's self-conscious view of himself as prophet and apostle for his age and his struggle to tame a sense of his own superiority, perceived by others as arrogance. Gordon looks at Calvin's character, his maturing vision of God and humanity, his personal tragedies and failures, his extensive relationships with others, and the context within which he wrote and taught. What emerges is a man who devoted himself to the Church, inspiring and transforming the lives of others, especially those who suffered persecution for their religious beliefs.
