Thoroughly researched, the book examines his obsession to build the Zion that the ancient prophets predicted would flourish in the latterdays. But preventing God from establishing the Holy City, Williams contended, was religious intolerance. The hope of the world was America where the seeds of freedom would be sown, nourished, and disseminated worldwide. Then God would send messengers from heaven who would call living apostles to send missionaries worldwide with their message of salvation. This book explores America's amazing response to Williams' dream that America would be the beacon of freedom and God's center of operations for the redemption of Zion.

Book excerpt: Essays into numerous aspects of the Domesday Book, shedding fresh light on its mysteries. Compiled from the records of a survey of the kingdom of England commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085, Domesday Book is a key source for the history of England. However, there has never been a critical edition of the textand so, despite over 200 years of intense academic study, its evidence has rarely been exploited to the full. The essays in this volume seek to realize the potential of Domesday Book by focussing on the manuscript itself. There are analyses of abbreviations, letter forms, and language; re-assessments of key sources, the role of tenants-in-chief in producing them, and the nature of the Norman settlement that their forms illuminate; a re-evaluation of the data and its referents; and finally, fresh examinations of the afterlife of the Domesday text and how it was subsequently perceived. In identifying new categories of evidence and revisiting old ones, these studies point to a better understanding of the text. There are surprising insights into its sources and developing programme and, intriguingly, a system of encoding hitherto unsuspected. In its turn the import of its data becomes clearer, thereby shedding new light on Anglo-Norman society and governance. It is in these terms that this volume offers a departure in Domesday studies and looks forward to the resolution of long-standing problems that have hitherto bedevilled the interpretation of an iconic text. David Roffe and K.S.B. Keats-Rohan are leading Domesday scholars who have published widely on Domesday Book and related matters. Contributors: Howard B. Clarke, Sally Harvey, K.S.B. Keats-Rohan, Andrew Lowerre, John Palmer, David Roffe, Ian Taylor, Pamela Taylor, Frank Thorn, Ann Williams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Trail of an Artist-Naturalist” is the 1940 Autobiography of Ernest Thompson Seton. Ernest Thompson Seton (1860 – 1946) was an English author and wildlife artist who founded the Woodcraft Indians in 1902. He was also among the founding members of the Boy Scouts of America, established in 1910. He wrote profusely on this subject, the most notable of his scouting literature including “The Birch Bark Roll” and the “Boy Scout Handbook”. Seton was also an early pioneer of animal fiction writing, and he is fondly remembered for his charming book “Wild Animals I Have Known” (1898). This volume constitutes a fascinating look into the life of a person who played an important role in the environmental and naturalist movement of a young North America, and it is not to be missed by those with an interest in the history of American Scouting. Other notable works by this author include: “Lobo, Rag and Vixen” (1899), “Two Little Savages” (1903), and “Animal Heroes” (1911). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Book excerpt: During the siege of Atlanta in the American Civil War, General Sherman ordered a series of Union cavalry raids behind Confederate lines to destroy railroad facilities and cut off the source of supplies to Atlanta to force the surrender of the city. One of those raids was led by General Stoneman, who not only planned to lead five thousand Union cavalrymen to destroy a railroad works but also planned to then continue south to Macon, Georgia. Once there, he intended to capture the city along with its notorious Camp Oglethorpe prison and free the fifteen hundred Union officers imprisoned there. Macon, Georgia, is approximately 160 miles south of the Union lines along the Chattahoochee River just north of Atlanta. If successful, Stonemans raiders would then have to fight their way back north to the Union lines and somehow manage to bring fifteen hundred weak and sick men along with them. This is the story of one young soldier from Illinois who took part in that raid and what happened to him and his three squad mates as they tried to make their way back to the Union lines and safety. Traveling at night and hiding by day, progress back north will be much slower and much more dangerous than the original ride south to Macon. Failure on their part will either end in death or imprisonment in the notorious Andersonville prison.

But war has been brewing over Norcasta in her absence. While Lazarus may reign as king, there are those that would see the blood heirs in power instead. Quinn, however, will never let that happen. Her brutality threatens to drive a wedge between her and those she cares about, but they should know she would do anything to protect them. Caught between the wills of his Left and Right Hands, Lazarus must navigate the pit of vipers that is his court and decide what sort of king he wants to be. But when Quinn pushes too far, she ignites a series of events that will either cement his rule, or destroy House Fierté entirely.

Kit and Swifty are called in by a relative after local law enforcement fails to come up with any clue to the missing mans whereabouts or what happened to him. Skeleton Canyon is located just north of the Mexican border. The east end of the canyon is in New Mexico and the west end is in Arizona. For hundreds of years the canyon was a thoroughfare for Mexicans and the Apache. It has been the scene for a massacre of all the members of Mexican burro train carrying silver bullion. It was where the Apache ambushed Troop D of the Fourth U S Cavalry, killing three troopers, burning their wagons and supplies and driving off forty horses and mules. It was where old man Clanton of the Clanton gang of Tombstone was murdered. It was also the site of Geronimos surrender to General Nelson Miles in 1886. The canyon has a dark and bloody history and is a rugged and desolate spot locals fear and tend to avoid. Kit and Swifty find themselves in danger as they encounter bands of illegals sneaking into the U.S., cartel drug smugglers, and others who have become experts at not being seen or found in one of the most dangerous places in the United States.

Book excerpt: The Palgrave Handbook of Power, Gender, and Psychology takes an intersectional feminist approach to the exploration of psychology and gender through a lens of power. The invisibility of power in psychological research and theorizing has been critiqued by scholars from many perspectives both within and outside the discipline. This volume addresses that gap. The handbook centers power in the analysis of gender, but does so specifically in relation to psychological theory, research, and praxis. Gathering the work of sixty authors from different geographies, career stages, psychological sub-disciplines, methodologies, and experiences, the handbook showcases creativity in approach, and diversity of perspective. The result is a work featuring a chorus of different voices, including diverse understandings of feminisms and power. Ultimately, the handbook presents a case for the importance of intersectionality and power for any feminist psychological endeavor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of both mainstream and independent media. Grounded in qualitative methods, this book explores three trans masculine run YouTube channels alongside the streaming productions: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Orange is the New Black, and Transparent. Analyzing and contrasting these narratives illuminates how even the most progressive of pop culture productions fail to present multi-dimensional transgender narratives, thereby intensifying stigma and shame for those outside of the binary (male or female, man or woman, gay or straight). In contrast, trans masculine produced YouTube vlogs, such as those discussed in this book, can help audience members unlearn the ways in which the continuum of sex, gender, and sexual orientation has been simplified and obscured through corporate media. These vlogs thus exemplify the various ways in which independent media acts as an educational tool toward greater awareness, and perhaps empathy, of/for the self and others in regards to sexual identity.

Book excerpt: This book sheds light on how sexuality and gender intersect in producing heteronormativity within the school system in Iceland. In spite of recent support for progressive policies regarding sexual and gender equality in the country, there remains a discrepancy between policy and practice with respect to LGBTQ rights and attitudes within the school system. This book draws on ethnographic data and interviews with LGBTQ students in high schools across the country and reveals that, although Nordic countries are sometimes portrayed as queer utopias, the school system in Iceland has a long road ahead in making schools more inclusive for all students.
