Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why a Rich Yankee Did Not Settle in California To please some Old lady neighbors this book is published. While reading the manuscript to them some would, by fits and starts, suddenly lay down their knitting, raise their eyes over their spectacles, and exclaim: That is rather too severe! Then would follow the sharp reply from a white-haired Daughter of the Revolution: Well, I guess the Judge knows; he has visited California, while you have never been outside of Gloucester; there now By Similar sallies the little patriotic woman saved this book from premature death - and the author can realize how his great-great-great (to be continued in our next) grandfather Adam felt when he calmly said: She gave me Of the tree and I did eat. The writer is too near the sunset Of life not to have the most kindly feelings toward all mankind, especially those of the Nation's Household who dwell Within the portals of the beautiful Golden Gate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yankee Jazz is a collection of essays and reflections based upon personal experience. My first career was in Arts and Entertainment. I was in Southern California, in my early twenties and it was amazing. I met world famous celebrities, traveled in style and devoured life in oversized bites. I left that behind for a South American sojourn that led to even greater adventures including the chance to find the love of my life. When our daughter was born in Miami Beach, I entered a second career as a salesman in Corporate America. Watching her grow into the incredible young woman I see going off to college this fall has been worth every moment spent in this strange and challenging occupation. The ideas expressed within these pages mark the opening of my Third Act. I hope you enjoy the show. John P. Calu Lawrenceville, NJ
Book Synopsis A Yankee Trader in the Gold Rush by : Franklin Agustus Buck
Download or read book A Yankee Trader in the Gold Rush written by Franklin Agustus Buck and published by . This book was released on 1930 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A native of Maine, Franklin Agustus Buck (1826-1909) was working in New York City when he heard of the gold strikes and set out for California in January 1849. A Yankee trader in the gold rush (1930) contains Buck's letters to his sister in Maine. They chronicle his first dozen years in the West: a voyage round the Horn to San Francisco; prospecting and storekeeping in various gold camps and the towns of Sacramento, Downieville, North Fork, Marysville, and Weaverville; and a trading voyage to Tahiti and Hawaii. Politics interest Buck, and he pays close attention to the issues in the 1852 election, local secessionist debate, and the impact of the Civil War. In the 1860s, Buck turns to agriculture, raising fruit and cattle at farms in Weaverville, Oakville, and Red Bluffs. Discoveries of silver lead him back to mining at Treasure City, Meadow Valley, and Pioche, Nevada.
