Book excerpt: During her three years as matron of the Female Prison at Sing Sing, 1844-1848, Eliza Burhans Farnham (1815-1864) tried to institute reforms based on phrenology. Discharged from the post, she soon learned that her lawyer-husband had died in California, leaving her with affairs to settle there. Farnham set about organizing a pioneer party of single, educated women to join her in the voyage round the Horn. California, in-doors and out (1856) opens with a description of her harrowing voyage round the Horn in 1849. In 1850 Farnham and her children moved to El Rancho La Libertad, the Santa Cruz farm left to her by her husband. She describes her experiences as a farmer, the position of women in California, mining life, the history of the Donner Expedition based on interviews with survivors, and the 1856 San Francisco Vigilance Committee.

Book excerpt: Alive with the exuberance, contradictions, and variety of the Golden State, this Depression-era guide to California is more than 700 pages of information that is, as David Kipen writes in his spirited introduction, "anecdotal, opinionated, and altogether habit-forming." Describing the history, culture, and roadside attractions of the 1930s, the WPA Guide to California features some of the very best anonymous literature of its era, with writing by luminaries such as San Francisco poet Kenneth Rexroth, composer-writer- hobo Harry Partch, and authors Tillie Olsen and Kenneth Patchen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book breaks new ground, not only in its coverage of California, but also in its treatment of the role of cultural links in enhancing national loyalty, in its attention to many groups of people of color, including Chinese and Latinos, and what happened to them during the Civil War. In addition, the book devotes attention to the ebb and flow of the two political parties and to the little-known fact that nearly 17,000 California men and women volunteered for military service on behalf of the Union. Glenna Matthews broadens understanding of the Civil War era both in terms of geography and in terms of social groupings.

Book excerpt: Thirty-five years after its initial publication, The Golden State remains a balanced, multicultural, and interpretative history, the ideal text for students of California history at the high school and community college level. With due attention to the many peoples who make California the most ethnically diverse state in the nation as well as the daunting environmental realities that challenge the resolve of all who call the Golden State home, the informative and enjoyable narrative features expanded coverage of such topics as women, water issues, ethnic relations, crime, sports, culture, and politics in the twentieth century. A crucial feature of this affordable, beautifully illustrated, and durable hardcover volume remains a chapter on state, county, and city government, detailing the responsibilities of state officers and the organization of the state legislature and court system. The elements of direct democracy-referendum, recall, and initiative-and the legislative process also are explained in direct yet lively fashion.
