California cannot fulfill her manifest potentialities until many new millions have been added to her present population. The hard sledding pioneer phase is past. There remains the task of building, in this garden of the West, a proud and rich civilization which will be in some measure an answer to the opulent challenge of nature. Life today in California is on the whole freer, richer, happier in all probability than it is anywhere else in the world. What life can be tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, ifman does well his part where nature has been infinitely prodigal, is something that can scarcely be contemplated without a catch of the breath. Californians Inc. Invites you to come and enjoy this free and vivid life of the present, and to join in building the greater California of the future. This booklet, like the map on the following page, is only a general outline of California and what it offers you. It is impossible, briefly, to tell you of all the resources and advantages of the many beautiful, progressive, and prosperous cities and towns and counties which make California what it is. But we have detailed information concerning all of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The hills which look across the plain to the beautiful bay and toward the Golden Gate, are, in places, very rugged, and wooded with live oak, laurel and sycamore. Trout streams wind their way among the hills, and within the boundaries of the county are canyons, dark with redwood trees. It wound through strange scarred hills, down canyons lone Where wild things screamed, with winds for company; Its milestones were the bones of pioneers. Bronzed, haggard men, often with thirst a-moan. Lashed on their beasts of burden toward the sea: An epic quest it was of elder years, For fabled gardens or for good, red gold, The trail men strove in iron days of old. To-day the steam god thunders through the vast, While dominant Saxons from the hurtling trains Smile at the aliens, Mexic, Indian, Who offer wares, keen-colored, like their past: Dread dramas of immitigable plains Rebuke the softness of the modern man; No menace, now, the desert's mood of sand; Still westward lies a green and golden land. For, at the magic touch of water, blooms The wilderness, and where of yore the yoke Tortured the toilers into dateless tombs, Lo! brightsome fruits to feed a mighty folk. - Richard Burton in The Century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of California The geography of California is a vast and many sided subject which has never yet been adequately treated. It is not the inten tion of the author in presenting this little hand-book to take up the subject in an exhaustive manner, for that would require a large volume. Nor is his intention to present a mere description of the various aspects of the geography of the State, for this has already been done, although in an inadequate manner, in various little school supplements and advertising pamphlets. Moreover, mere description cannot impart real geographic knowledge, since we must know something of causes and relations. The object which the author has in mind is rather to give a simple and yet detailed description of the conditions under which we are living, and weave them into a connected and rational whole, so that teachers and pupils may acquire the elements of a rational knowledge of California. As our work in geography is at present outlined it is ridiculously unphilosophical as well as thoroughly inadequate. The geography of California is extraordinarily varied and interesting. Children should not leave school without some elementary conceptions of the origin and meaning of the physical features about them, of the strongly contrasted climatic condi tions, and of the influence which these exert upon our lives. This might not be needed in the present case were it not that this writer deems it well to apologize for his boldness as an unlettered man, in trying to write a book at all, and also to crave that his frequent use of the first personal pronoun singular may not be set down to vanity, but rather to the fact of its being convenient for stating, briefly, matters personal to himself, and of his own memory and experience. To old Pioneers in the American settlement of California some parts of the following record may appear incorrect, and some may be too familiar or unimportant to be interesting but let each fact be taken as a link in a chain of a California life, and its value, though small, may be acknowledged. It has appeared to this writer that every fact relating to the early settlement of California should be recorded and treasured up in fact, that it is the duty of every Pioneer to put in writing his early California experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of California: Embracing What I Saw and Heard There, With Scenes in the Pacific We may learn much from the pulseless soli tudes - from the desert untrodden by the foot of living thing - from the frozen world of mountains, whose chasms and cliffs never echoed to aught but the thunder-tempests girding their frozen peaks from old Nature, piled, rocky, bladeless, toneless if we will allow its lessons of awe to reach the mind, and impress it with the fresh and holy images which they were made to inspire. And now, dear reader, my task is done. Should you laugh and weep, suffer and rejoice, with the actors in the wayfarings before you, and send your fancy in after-times over those rose-clad realms where they will lead you, and feel the dews of a pleasant remembrance falling on your life, I shall receive a full reward for my toil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristic look of Southern California, with its red-tiled roofs, stucco homes, and Spanish street names suggests an enduring fascination with the region’s Spanish-Mexican past. In this engaging study, Phoebe S. Kropp reveals that the origins of this aesthetic were not solely rooted in the Spanish colonial period, but arose in the early twentieth century, when Anglo residents recast the days of missions and ranchos as an idyllic golden age of pious padres, placid Indians, dashing caballeros and sultry senoritas. Four richly detailed case studies uncover the efforts of Anglo boosters and examine the responses of Mexican and Indian people in the construction of places that gave shape to this cultural memory: El Camino Real, a tourist highway following the old route of missionaries; San Diego’s world’s fair, the Panama-California Exposition; the architecturally- and racially-restricted suburban hamlet Rancho Santa Fe; and Olvera Street, an ersatz Mexican marketplace in the heart of Los Angeles. California Vieja is a compelling demonstration of how memory can be more than nostalgia. In Southern California, the Spanish past became a catalyst for the development of the region’s built environment and public culture, and a civic narrative that still serves to marginalize Mexican and Indian residents.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Sketches: New and Old These Sketches wrote themselves, as it were. About three years ago my friend, Prof. Alonzo Phelps (formerly of Harvard University), in reply to my remark that somebody ought to preserve the vanishing phases of the early California life, said, "Yes, it ought to be done, and you are the man to do it." The matter was then dismissed from my mind as the flattering suggestion of a partial friend. After leaving California, every thing connected with my life, or that had come under my observation while there, assumed a fresh interest to my own mind. The remark of my friend was remembered, and, more to gratify a kindly impulse than with a view to make a volume, in snatches of such leisure as an editor gets, the penciling of these humble Sketches began. Now that the little book is finished, I am at least half sorry it was ever begun. Yet there has been a pleasure in writing it. The old days have come back to me again, and images that were fading have stood before me in the form and color of life. Ah! if I could make them stand thus before my kind readers! The Sketches are all from real life. In one or two instances names are disguised for obvious reasons. I have told the story as I saw it, and as I remember it. There is no fancy-sketch among these chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Sky in California While the following pages touch upon some matters with which the tourist who travels along conventional lines in California is familiar, the main concern of the author has been to draw attention to an immensity of almost unexplored mountain, desert, canon and flowery plain, which the average tourist sees - if at all - from the car window. This is the real California; and but for man's unceasing battle with Nature, the artificial wonderland of palms and roses and orange groves which his boundless energy and patient cultivation have evoked, would relapse almost in a night into this wild, majestic solitude. Like all genuine things, it has the compelling charm of the primitive and to the lover of the unartificial it appeals with freshness and power. Hunters and anglers, forest-rangers and prospectors know this region; the cowboy and the miner know it; above all, the Indian knows it, and when he is taken from it, he dies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the City of San Francisco: And Incidentally of the State of California This book was written at the request of the committee appointed to manage the celebration in San Francisco of the Centennial Anniversary of the Declaration of our National Independence, in accordance with a resolution adopted by Congress on the thirteenth of March, 1876, recommending that in every town the delivery of a historical sketch of the place from its foundation should be part of the local celebration. It was considered better that, instead of a brief sketch to be read publicly in an hour, the metropolis on the American coast of the North Pacific should have a book of several hundred pages. The city furnishes material enough for a history which could never be prepared on a more appropriate occasion than in commemoration of the National Centennial year, especially since it happens to coincide with the completion of the first century in the existence of our city. Such a double epoch demanded some special mark of recognition. There are urgent reasons why works of this kind should be written by pioneers, and while there are still hundreds of pioneers living to furnish information from their personal reminiscences and from papers that will be lost when they die.
