Book Synopsis The Calderonian Stage by : Manuel Delgado
Download or read book The Calderonian Stage written by Manuel Delgado and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of essays invites the contemporary reader to consider the works of Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-81), who became the most important and influential dramatist of the second period of the Spanish Golden Age, just as Lope de Vega (1562-1635) was for the preceding generation. A follower of Lope in his youth, Calderon, as a mature playwright, developed a drama all of his own, a drama that was highly conceptual, tightly knit, symbolic, and, in many cases, spectacular. Calderon's artistry in verbal and visual symbolism made the performance of his works a feast for both the senses and the intellect." "Until now, many of Calderon's critics have focused their attention on how the poetic devices, particularly metaphors and symbols, appearing in his plays represent his philosophy or his ideas. But as some scholars of Spanish Golden Age drama have argued, the study of Calderon's theater must take into account not only the literary text, but also the physical conditions of the stage, the elements used in the representation - decor, costumes, lighting, music - and the house dynamics at each performance. In other words, each play must be considered as a composition of the soul and body, of poetry and spectacle, in which both elements support, complement, and explain one another in performance." "This is the task that has been undertaken by the contributors to this volume. By focusing on the relationship between text and performance, they have highlighted several areas that are often overlooked in traditional text-based approaches. From different perspectives, they show how Calderon gives concrete shape to the concepts and tales from the Bible, theology, mythology, the Corpus Hermeticum, emblematic literature, philosophy, and realities of civic and domestic origin."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Calderon and the Baroque Tradition written by Kurt Levy and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calderón and the Baroque Tradition is the outcome of a tricentennial commemoration of the seventeenth century Spanish poet and dramatist, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and a tribute to a distinguished tradition in Calderonian studies at the University of Toronto. A major dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age and a master of the auto sacramental genre, Calderón produced some one hundred and twenty comedias and eighty autos during his rather colourful lifetime. This volume assembles an impressive collection of essays relating the baroque artistic tradition to such aspects of Calderón's theatre as the use of music, mythology, costume, and his distinctive dramatic technique. It will be of interest and value both to students of Spanish drama and Hispanic life in general and to followers of Calderón in particular.

Book Synopsis Emblems of Eloquence by : Wendy Heller
Download or read book Emblems of Eloquence written by Wendy Heller and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2004-01-12 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera developed during a time when the position of women—their rights and freedoms, their virtues and vices, and even the most basic substance of their sexuality—was constantly debated. Many of these controversies manifested themselves in the representation of the historical and mythological women whose voices were heard on the Venetian operatic stage. Drawing upon a complex web of early modern sources and ancient texts, this engaging study is the first comprehensive treatment of women, gender, and sexuality in seventeenth-century opera. Wendy Heller explores the operatic manifestations of female chastity, power, transvestism, androgyny, and desire, showing how the emerging genre was shaped by and infused with the Republic's taste for the erotic and its ambivalent attitudes toward women and sexuality. Heller begins by examining contemporary Venetian writings about gender and sexuality that influenced the development of female vocality in opera. The Venetian reception and transformation of ancient texts—by Ovid, Virgil, Tacitus, and Diodorus Siculus—form the background for her penetrating analyses of the musical and dramatic representation of five extraordinary women as presented in operas by Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, and their successors in Venice: Dido, queen of Carthage (Cavalli); Octavia, wife of Nero (Monteverdi); the nymph Callisto (Cavalli); Queen Semiramis of Assyria (Pietro Andrea Ziani); and Messalina, wife of Claudius (Carlo Pallavicino).

This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: María de Zayas y Sotomayor (1590–1650?) published two collections of novellas, Novelas amorosas y exemplares (1637) and Desengaños amorosos (1647), which were immensely popular in her day. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Victorian and bourgeois sensibilities exiled her “scandalous” works to the outer fringes of serious literature. Over the last two decades, however, she has gained an enthusiastic and ever-expanding readership, drawing intense critical attention and achieving canonical status as a major figure of the Spanish Golden Age. In this first comprehensive study of Zayas’s prose, Margaret R. Greer explores the relationship between narration and desire, analyzing both the “desire for readers” displayed by Zayas in her Prologue and the sexual desire that drives the telling within the novellas themselves. Greer examines Zayas’s narrative strategies through the twin lenses of feminist and psychoanalytic theory. She devotes close attention to the weight of Renaissance literary traditions and the role of Zayas’s own cultural context in shaping her work. She discusses Zayas’s biography and the reception of her publications; her advocacy of women’s rights; her conflictive loyalty to an aristocratic, patriarchal order; her crafting of feminine tales of desire; and her erasure of the frontiers between the natural and supernatural, indeed, between love and death itself. In so doing, Greer offers an expansive analysis of this recently rediscovered Golden Age writer.

Book Synopsis Monarchy, Political Culture, and Drama in Seventeenth-Century Madrid by : Professor Jodi Campbell
Download or read book Monarchy, Political Culture, and Drama in Seventeenth-Century Madrid written by Professor Jodi Campbell and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early modern Spain, theater reached the height of its popularity during the same decades in which Spanish monarchs were striving to consolidate their power. Jodi Campbell uses the dramatic production of seventeenth-century Madrid to understand how ordinary Spaniards perceived the political developments of this period. Through a study of thirty-three plays by four of the most popular playwrights of Madrid (Pedro Caldern de la Barca, Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, Juan de Matos Fragoso, and Juan Bautista Diamante), Campbell analyzes portrayals of kingship during what is traditionally considered to be the age of absolutism and highlights the differences between the image of kingship cultivated by the monarchy and that presented on Spanish stages. A surprising number of plays performed and published in Madrid in the seventeenth century, Campbell shows, featured themes about kingship: debates over the qualities that make a good king, tests of a king's abilities, and stories about the conflicts that could arise between the personal interests of a king and the best interest of his subjects. Rather than supporting the absolutist and centralizing policies of the monarchy, popular theater is shown here to favor the idea of reciprocal obligations between subjects and monarch. This study contributes new evidence to the trend of recent scholarship that revises our views of early modern Spanish absolutism, arguing for the significance of the perspectives of ordinary people to the realm of politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore an insightful account of the reception of Mesopotamia in modern cinema In Reception of Mesopotamia on Film, Dr. Maria de Fátima Rosa explores how the Ancient Mesopotamian civilization was portrayed by the movie industry, especially in America and Italy, and how it was used to convey analogies between ancient and contemporary cultural and moral contexts. Spanning a period that stretches from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, the book explores how the Assyrian and Babylonian elites, particularly kings, queens, and priestesses, were perceived and represented on screen by filmmakers. A focus on the role played by Ancient Near Eastern women and on the polytheistic religion practiced in the land between the rivers will be provided. This book also offers an insightful interpretation of the bias message that most of these films portray and how the Mesopotamian past and Antiquity brought to light and stimulated the debate on emerging 20th century political and social issues. The book also offers: A thorough introduction to the Old Testament paradigm and the romanticism of classical authors A comprehensive exploration of the literary reception of the Mesopotamian legacy and its staging Practical discussions of the rediscovery, appropriation, and visual reproduction of Assyria and Babylonia In-depth examinations of cinematic genres and cinematographic contexts Perfect for students of the history of antiquity and cinematographic history, Reception of Mesopotamia on Film is also an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in reception studies.
