Book excerpt: This volume traces back the history of interaction between the “computational” or “algorithmic” aspects of elementary mathematics and mathematics education throughout ages. More specifically, the examples of mathematical practices analyzed by the historians of mathematics and mathematics education who authored the chapters in the present collection show that the development (and, in some cases, decline) of counting devices and related computational practices needs to be considered within a particular context to which they arguably belonged, namely, the context of mathematics instruction; in their contributions the authors also explore the role that the instruments played in formation of didactical approaches in various mathematical traditions, stretching from Ancient Mesopotamia to the 20th century Europe and North America.

Book excerpt: This Handbook presents an overview and analysis of the international `state-of-the-field' of mathematics education at the end of the 20th century. The more than 150 authors, editors and chapter reviewers involved in its production come from a range of countries and cultures. They have created a book of 36 original chapters in four sections, surveying the variety of practices, and the range of disciplinary interconnections, which characterise the field today, and providing perspectives on the study of mathematics education for the 21st century. It is first and foremost a reference work, and will appeal to anyone seeking up-to-date knowledge about the main developments in mathematics education. These will include teachers, student teachers and student researchers starting out on a serious study of the subject, as well as experienced researchers, teacher educators, educational policy-makers and curriculum developers who need to be aware of the latest areas of knowledge development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly technological world, mathematics curricula around the world have responded accordingly. Tedious computation, which is efficiently and accurately done using a simple calculator as well as more powerful software programmes, can no longer be the focus of any mathematics curriculum. In Singapore, the curriculum was recently revised to focus on the development and improvement of students’ intellectual competence (Singapore Ministry of Education 2006). The ability to visualize and to look for connections are given more emphasis than the ability to do tedious computation. Research in the use of calculators in mathematics teaching and learning has generally concentrated on two areas. First, there have been metaanalyses of the effects of calculator use on student achievement. Second, there are several studies on teachers’ beliefs on calculator use in the classroom. The metaanalyses of the effects of calculator use have found that there were improvements in computational, conceptual and problem-solving skills as well as in attitudes towards mathematics (Ellington, 2003; Hembree & Dessart, 1992). A study on instructional leaders showed that the majority of them agree with the research findings (Yeo, 2008). A study on practising teachers found that a majority of them did not believe that calculator use lowers students’ achievement (Carter, Ferrucci & Yeap, 2008). In a press release to explain the move to introduce the use of calculators in examination in upper primary levels, it was announced that calculator use can facilitate exploration to discover patterns and to make generalizations as well as make the use of authentic data possible (Singapore Ministry of Education, 2007). Without calculator use, the repetitive computations needed for students to discover patterns make this important aspect of mathematics learning tedious. Authentic data often involve numbers which may be difficult for students to deal with without calculators.

This text outlines what is meant by arithmetic and enables trainee teachers to build their own confidence in teaching arithmetic. It covers all aspects of arithmetic including recall of number facts and traditional pen and paper methods. Each arithmetical approach is illustrated with detailed examples and readers can access their own learning in each area. Guidance on when and where to use different approaches to enhance children′s learning is included and interactive activities highlight essential links between theory and practice. Abouth the Transforming Primary QTS series This series reflects the new creative way schools are begining to teach, taking a fresh approach to supporting trainees as they work towards primary QTS. Titles provide fully up to date resources focused on teaching a more integrated and inclusive curriculum, and texts to draw out meaningful and explicit cross curricular links.

Book excerpt: "This book is the third in an important trilogy of edited collections on the teaching and learning of primary mathematics. To each book the editor, Ian Thompson, has attracted a team of expert contributors, and himself set the characteristically high standard of writing and clarity... When, in 10 or 20 years' time, people want to know about the state of English primary mathematics at the turn of the 21st century, they will turn to this volume. You would do well to read it now." Mathematics in Schools "This is the third book in the popular series edited by Ian Thompson that brings together an impressive array of contributing authors. Current issues are discussed in an informed but concise way that makes research accessible to the wider community of mathematics educators." Julia Anghileri, University of Cambridge This book explores the effect that the National Numeracy Strategy and its successor, the Primary Strategy, have had on the way in which mathematics is taught in primary schools. Prominent contributors examine the Strategies' recommendations from the perspective of their own research areas or interests, and discuss the issues involved, including: Ideas for extending current practice Suggestions of important aspects of mathematics teaching that are being given little or no emphasis Alternative approaches that could be integrated into current practice Aspects of current practice that need to take account of recent research findings or emerging issues. Each chapter discusses implications for teaching and learning primary mathematics. The book will be particularly useful for trainees, practising teachers, mathematics coordinators and numeracy consultants. Contributors: Mundher Adhami, Mike Askew, Carol Aubrey, Margaret Brown, Ann Dowker, Rosemary Hafeez, Steve Higgins, Keith Jones, Lesley Jones, Valsa Koshy, Alison Millett, Claire Mooney, Laurie Rousham, Malcolm Swan, Ian Thompson, Helen J Williams.

Book excerpt: Now in its third edition, Mathematics in the Primary School has been updated to reflect recent mathematics curriculum documentation and revised standards for QTS. Key areas include: The role of talk in learning maths Teacher questioning Development of children’s reasoning Creative engagement with maths Assessment for learning and self assessment Suggested resources for teachers including ICT Providing a coherent set of principles for teaching primary mathematics across the main topics in the curriculum, the authors explore children’s understanding of key areas of mathematics, at reception, infant and junior levels. Important principles and teaching approaches are identified, including the use of calculators and computers, and there is an emphasis on mental mathematics and problem solving supporting key issues raised by the Williams review (2008). Case studies are used throughout to illustrate how different teaching approaches are put into practice and how children respond to them, and there is advice on planning, organisation and assessment of mathematical learning in the classroom. Emphasising the importance of teachers’ own mathematical knowledge and offering clear guidance and practical advice, this book is essential reading for students, NQTs and practising teachers with a focus on primary mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective teaching is a combination of technical skills and knowledge but good teachers also need to understand how children learn and how they can most effectively be taught. Engaging Primary Children in Mathematics explores the various strategies for engaging children in mathematical learning in the light of theory and practice and is designed to talk straight to the teacher/student about their classroom approach to the teaching of primary mathematics. The importance of creating a learning environment in which children can learn to be young mathematicians, where they can explore, create and solve problems, cannot be underestimated. Margaret Sangster explores how students and practitioners can develop their practice by reviewing a range of approaches to the teaching of mathematics and the development of those young mathematicians, with examples of thought-provoking activities to inform their own practice.
