Book Synopsis Calculator in Upper Primary Mathematics by : Dr Yeap Ban Har
Download or read book Calculator in Upper Primary Mathematics written by Dr Yeap Ban Har and published by Shing Lee Publishers Pte Ltd. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly technological world, mathematics curricula around the world have responded accordingly. Tedious computation, which is efficiently and accurately done using a simple calculator as well as more powerful software programmes, can no longer be the focus of any mathematics curriculum. In Singapore, the curriculum was recently revised to focus on the development and improvement of students’ intellectual competence (Singapore Ministry of Education 2006). The ability to visualize and to look for connections are given more emphasis than the ability to do tedious computation. Research in the use of calculators in mathematics teaching and learning has generally concentrated on two areas. First, there have been metaanalyses of the effects of calculator use on student achievement. Second, there are several studies on teachers’ beliefs on calculator use in the classroom. The metaanalyses of the effects of calculator use have found that there were improvements in computational, conceptual and problem-solving skills as well as in attitudes towards mathematics (Ellington, 2003; Hembree & Dessart, 1992). A study on instructional leaders showed that the majority of them agree with the research findings (Yeo, 2008). A study on practising teachers found that a majority of them did not believe that calculator use lowers students’ achievement (Carter, Ferrucci & Yeap, 2008). In a press release to explain the move to introduce the use of calculators in examination in upper primary levels, it was announced that calculator use can facilitate exploration to discover patterns and to make generalizations as well as make the use of authentic data possible (Singapore Ministry of Education, 2007). Without calculator use, the repetitive computations needed for students to discover patterns make this important aspect of mathematics learning tedious. Authentic data often involve numbers which may be difficult for students to deal with without calculators.

Book Synopsis Inside Your Calculator by : Gerald R. Rising
Download or read book Inside Your Calculator written by Gerald R. Rising and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 2007-06-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncover the mysteries that lie within your calculator This remarkable book explores the simple internal calculator processes—algorithms and programs—that tell us, for example, that the cosine of 56? is 0.5591929035. Using carefully constructed diagrams and figures, the author effectively demonstrates how calculator keys compute powers, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry functions, while also providing insights into simple programming, the conversion between decimal and binary numeration, and perhaps most importantly, the structure of our numeration systems. Many people believe that the processes that drive calculators demand advanced mathematical concepts; however, this book proves that a minimal understanding of algebra and geometry is all that is needed to follow the step-by-step explanations of how scientific calculators work. Inside Your Calculator: From Simple Programs to Significant Insights is a complete and multifaceted exercise in critical thinking. This book features: A detailed explanation of how to use a graphics calculator and program basic functions A discussion of the history of mathematics when appropriate, which provides a foundation for further learning Fundamental mathematical lessons and interesting applications of pre-calculus mathematics A thorough review of the fundamentals of programming, algebra, and geometry needed to gain insight into why the algorithms work and how the results are meaningful in our lives While the simultaneous use of a calculator is not needed to gain insight into how the algorithms work, those who do have a programmable graphics calculator can experiment with the programs presented in the book. These programs may be used on TI-84 and TI-83 calculators, and additional information for other Texas Instruments calculators as well as the Casio FX series is available on the book's related web site. As a result of over fifty years of award-winning teaching experience in both high school and college classrooms, Dr. Rising anticipates and answers potential questions from readers, and he successfully brings this subject alive in an illuminating and entertaining way. This book is therefore not only ideal for undergraduate mathematics majors as either a primary or supplemental text, but it also appeals to anyone with an interest in mathematics and its ideas.
