Book excerpt: The trends and consequences of terrorist activities are often captured by counting the number of incidents and casualties. More recently, the effects of terrorist acts on various aspects of the economy have been analyzed. These costs are surveyed and put in perspective. As economic consequences are only a part of the overall costs of terrorism, possible approaches for estimating the utility losses of the people affected are discussed. Results using the life satisfaction approach, in which individual utility is approximated by self-reported subjective well-being, suggest that people's utility losses may far exceed the purely economic consequences.
Book Synopsis Tragedy Plus Time by : Adam Cayton-Holland
Download or read book Tragedy Plus Time written by Adam Cayton-Holland and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Inspiring, tragic, and at times heart-rendingly funny.” —People Unsentimental, unexpectedly funny, and incredibly honest, Tragedy Plus Time is a love letter to every family that has ever felt messy, complicated, or (even momentarily) magnificent. Meet the Magnificent Cayton-Hollands, a trio of brilliant, acerbic teenagers from Denver, Colorado, who were going to change the world. Anna, Adam, and Lydia were taught by their father, a civil rights lawyer, and mother, an investigative journalist, to recognize injustice and have their hearts open to the universe—the good, the bad, the heartbreaking (and, inadvertently, the anxiety-inducing and the obsessive-compulsive disorder-fueling). Adam chose to meet life’s tough breaks and cruel realities with stand-up comedy; his older sister, Anna, chose law; while their youngest sister, Lydia, struggled to find her place in the world. Beautiful and whip-smart, Lydia was witty, extremely sensitive, fiercely stubborn, and always somewhat haunted. She and Adam bonded over comedy from a young age, running skits in their basement and obsessing over episodes of The Simpsons. When Adam sunk into a deep depression in college, it was Lydia who was able to reach him and pull him out. But years later as Adam’s career takes off, Lydia’s own depression overtakes her, and, though he tries, Adam can’t return the favor. When she takes her own life, the family is devastated, and Adam throws himself into his stand-up, drinking, and rage. He struggles with disturbing memories of Lydia’s death and turns to EMDR therapy to treat his post-traumatic stress disorder when he realizes there’s a difference between losing and losing it. Adam Cayton-Holland is a tremendously talented writer and comedian, uniquely poised to take readers to the edges of comedy and tragedy, brilliance and madness. Tragedy Plus Time is a revelatory, darkly funny, and poignant tribute to a lost sibling that will have you reaching for the phone to call your brother or sister by the last page.
Download or read book Greek Tragedy written by H. D. F. Kitto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work not only records developments in the form and style of Greek drama, it also analyses the reasons for these changes. It provides illuminating answers to questions that have confronted generations of students, such as: * why did Aeschylus introduce the second actor? * why did Sophocles develop character drawing? * why are some of Euripides' plots so bad and others so good? Greek Tragedy is neither a history nor a handbook, but a penetrating work of criticism which all students of literature will find suggestive and stimulating.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Modeling of Warfare and Combat Phenomenon by : Jeffrey Strickland
Download or read book Mathematical Modeling of Warfare and Combat Phenomenon written by Jeffrey Strickland and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of this book is to assist the student to develop the skills necessary to effectively employ the ideas of mathematics to solve military problems. At the simplest level I seek to promote an understanding of why mathematics is useful as a language for characterizing the interaction and relationships among quantifiable concepts, or in mathematical terms, variables. The text explores models of terrorism, attrition, search, detection, missile defense, radar, and operational reliability Throughout the text I emphasize the notion of added value and why it is the driving force behind military mathematical modeling. For a given mathematical model to be deemed a success something must be learned that was not obvious without the modeling procedure. Very often added value comes in the form of a prediction. In the absence of added value the modeling procedure becomes an exercise not unrelated to digging a ditch simply to fill it back up again.
Download or read book The Concept of Tragedy written by Sam Han and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Events in the world today appear to be increasingly uncontrollable and unknowable. Climate change, refugee crises, and global pandemics seem to demonstrate the limits of human reason, science, and technology. In light of this, the terms "tragedy" and "tragic" have come into greater use. What does the register of the tragic do? What does its deployment in the contemporary context and other times of crisis mean? In addressing such questions, this book also argues for a "tragic vision" embedded in the history of social thought, demonstrating the relevance of the ancient tragedians and Aristotle as well as Shakespeare and modern dramatists to the most pressing questions of agency and collectivity in the social sciences. Developing a theory of "tragic social science," which is applied to topics including global inequality, celebrity culture, pandemics, and climate change, The Concept of Tragedy aims to restore "tragedy" as a productive analytic in the social sciences. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, social theory, media and communications, and literary criticism with interests in tragedy, suffering, and modernity.
Book Synopsis The Locus of Tragedy by : Arthur Cools
Download or read book The Locus of Tragedy written by Arthur Cools and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask for the tragic and Europe will answer. Leaving behind the philosophersa (TM) enthusiasm of the nineteenth century, a ~tragedya (TM) and a ~the tragica (TM) now seem little more than vague containers. However, it appears that we still discover a tragic essence in our personal lives. Time and again tragedy is being registered, written down and staged. This book wants to open a contemporary philosophical perspective on the tragic. What is the locus of tragedy? Does it relate to metaphysics, the gods, destiny, and chance? Or is it a matter of ethics, of the Law and its transgression? Does man himself occupy the locus of tragedy, because of his unreasonable and boundless desires, as many philosophers have suggested? Is man today still able to account for his tragic condition? Or do we locate the tragic first and foremost in the esthetic imagination? Is not the theatrical genre of tragedy the locus authenticus of all things tragic? Is there more to the tragic than drama and play?

Book Synopsis Greek Tragedy into Film by : Kenneth MacKinnon
Download or read book Greek Tragedy into Film written by Kenneth MacKinnon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Greek tragedy is sometimes regarded as a form long dead and buried, both theatre producers and film directors seem slow to accept its interment. Originally published in 1986, this book reflects the renewed interest in questions of staging the Greek plays, to give a comprehensive account and critical analysis of all the important versions of Greek tragedy made on film. From the 1927 footage of the re-enactment of Aeschylus’ Prometheus in Chains at the Delphi Festival organised by Angelos Sikelianos to Pasolini’s Notes for an African Oresteia, the study encompasses the version of Oedipus by Tyrone Guthrie, Tzavellas’s Antigone (with Irene Papas), Michael Cacoyannis’s series which included Electra, The Trojan Women, and Iphigeneia, Pasolini’s Oedipus and Medea (with Maria Callas), Miklos Jancso’s Elektreia, Dassim’s Phaedra and others. Many interesting questions are raised by the transference of a highly stylised form such as Greek tragedy to what is often claimed to be the ‘realistic’ medium of film. What becomes clear is that the heroic myths retain with ease the power to move the audiences in very different milieux through often strikingly different means. The book may be read as an adjunct to viewing of the films, but enough synopsis is given to make its arguments accessible to those familiar only with the classical texts, or with neither version.

Book excerpt: This volume reflects changing critical perceptions of Shakespeare's works from Renaissance to modern times and celebrates the power of Shakespearean tragedy. The selection of critical reaction covers both the general concept of Shakespearean tragedy and its expression in the major plays, illustrating the main directions of critical approaches to Shakespearean tragedy and enabling the reader to develop an informed response to Shakespeare's dramatic works. An introductory chapter traces the development of the concept of tragedy from classical times, and its dramatic expression in the time of Shakespeare. Each of Shakespeare's great tragedies - Hamlet, Macbeth, Lear, and Othello - is considered in turn, and a final chapter summarizes contemporary critical approaches so that the reader can link the best of the critical past with the present critical scene.

Book excerpt: Shakespearean Tragedy brings together fifteen major contemporary essays on individual plays and the genre as a whole. Each piece has been carefully chosen as a key intervention in its own right and as a representative of an influential critical approach to the genre. The collection as a whole, therefore, provides both a guide and explanation to the various ways in which contemporary criticism has determined our understanding of the tragedies, and the opportunity for assessing the wider issues such criticism raises. The collection begins by considering the impact of social semiotics on approaches to the tragedies, before moving on to deal, in turn, with the various forms of Marxist criticism, New Historicism, Cultural Materialism, Feminism, Psychoanalysis, and Poststructuralism.
