Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title helps us in using analytics to make more effective talent management decisions. Most managers understand that employees can make or break a company's strategy. You can have the best ideas and the most promising plan, but if you don't have the right people to carry it out, that plan will fail. Still, despite having this critical knowledge, most companies don't have a data-driven approach to the decisions they make about talent. In fact, a recent IBM study that interviewed over 400 senior HR executives showed that only 6 per cent of companies believe they can effectively use human capital data to make strategic workforce decisions. Enter "Calculating Success", the forthcoming book by human capital experts Carl Hoffmann, Eric Lesser, and Tim Ringo. Based on decades of experience creating human capital systems at IBM, the authors show how using analytics can dramatically improve a company's ability to make better and faster talent decisions. By organizing the book around four crucial questions managers must ask, the book provides a framework to help executives rethink how they use information on talent. The result? A path to using analytics to make more effective talent management decisions. In addition, the authors' ideas help to link HR with all levels of the organization in a strategic way, by showing readers how to connect their version of analytics to the strategic mission of the larger organization, so that the analytics flows throughout the enterprise. With detailed examples and studies from IBM's Institute for Business Value and Human Capital Management practice, this book will make you rethink the relationship of talent to business success. The results allow for a more stable and cost-effective workforce, an improved ability to motivate employees, and a more systematic approach to developing critical talent.

Book excerpt: ghSMART, the bestselling team behind Who: The A Method for Hiring, returns with a breakthrough formula for how the best leaders and teams deliver results. “ghSMART is the world’s top firm for helping leaders hire talented teams and run them at full power. Nothing is more important.”—Marshall Goldsmith, bestselling author of Mojo and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There “The most useful book about leadership.” That is what we hope you and your team will say after finishing Power Score. Is your team running at full power? Only 10 percent of leaders run their teams at full power. The formula you are about to learn is based on the most extensive research of its kind, spanning more than 15,000 careers with over 9 million data points. The idea has been battle-tested for more than two decades by leaders in every major industry. It works. Successful leadership starts with three key questions: 1. Priorities—Do we have the right priorities? (Only 24 percent of leaders do.) 2. Who—Do we have the right people on the team? (Only 14 percent of leaders do.) 3. Relationships—Do we have the right relationships that deliver results? (Only 47 percent of leaders do.) Learn how to calculate your team’s Power Score, and how to improve each of the three key areas of leadership. Learn what to do, and what not do, from compelling statistics and inspiring stories of those leaders who have succeeded and those who have failed. You may be surprised how easy it is to read this little book. And you may be even more surprised by how fast this approach will boost your team’s results. When you dial up your team’s Power Score, you will make a greater impact as a leader, help your team earn more money for your cause (whatever your cause may be), and enjoy greater career success. Praise for Power Score “Shaking distrust out of an organization is hard. But the payoff is immense. The authors provide plenty of guidance presented in an accessible Q&A format.”—Success “I wouldn’t be surprised if Power Score became the new go-to guide for leadership. Effective teams are key in everything from healthcare to business to government to nonprofits, and this book will help organizations change the conversation about getting results.”—Atul Gawande, New York Times bestselling author of Being Mortal and The Checklist Manifesto “Smart, Street, and Foster have turned more than twenty years of research on leadership into a practical, systematic approach for getting results.”—Frederick W. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of FedEx Corporation “My entire team applied the principles of Power Score and has enjoyed explosive growth as a result. Even better, I am having more fun as a leader than ever before.”—Jeff Booth, chief executive officer and founder of BuildDirect

Book excerpt: In the spring of 2010, Harvard Business School’s graduating class asked HBS professor Clay Christensen to address them—but not on how to apply his principles and thinking to their post-HBS careers. The students wanted to know how to apply his wisdom to their personal lives. He shared with them a set of guidelines that have helped him find meaning in his own life, which led to this now-classic article. Although Christensen’s thinking is rooted in his deep religious faith, these are strategies anyone can use. Since 1922, Harvard Business Review has been a leading source of breakthrough ideas in management practice. The Harvard Business Review Classics series now offers you the opportunity to make these seminal pieces a part of your permanent management library. Each highly readable volume contains a groundbreaking idea that continues to shape best practices and inspire countless managers around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an accessible presentation of the standard statistical techniques used by labour economists. It emphasises both the input and the output of empirical analysis and covers five major topics concerning econometric methods used in labour economics: regression and related methods, choice modelling, selectivity issues, duration analysis, and policy evaluation techniques. Each of these is presented in terms of model specification, possible estimation problems, diagnostic checking, and interpretation of the output. It aims to provide guidance to practitioners on how to use the techniques and how to make sense of the results that are produced. It covers methods that are considered to be 'standard' tools in labour economics, but which are often given only a brief and highly technical treatment in econometrics textbooks. It will be a useful reference for postgraduates and advanced undergraduates, researchers embarking on empirical labour market analysis, and for more experienced economists wishing to apply these techniques for the first time.

This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses the monitoring and state estimation of electrical grids, especially at the distribution level. For economic and technical reasons, grid monitoring cannot be implemented with a similarly high measurement density as in transmission grids. Two new monitoring methods, which are designed for low measurement density, are therefore presented for use in real-time grid operation. First, a heuristic monitoring method is presented, which does not require pseudo-measurements and estimates voltage magnitudes and line loadings. Second, a monitoring method based on artificial neural networks is presented. With appropriate training, the method can estimate grid variables, e.g., voltage magnitudes or line loadings, with high accuracy. The methods are tested on thousands of test scenarios using a comprehensive evaluation methodology. For measurement infrastructure planning, a concept is presented to determine suitable measurement locations for the use of one of the monitoring methods. After optimization, several possible measurement configurations are presented with their average and maximum errors and the projected capital expenditures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Justice, and the Wars in Iraq offers a feminist critique and reconstruction of just war theory. It points out gender biases in the just war tradition and suggests alternative jus ad bellum and jus in bello standards that emphasize women, political marginality, and empathy. Laura Sjoberg applies this feminist just war theory to analyze the wars in Iraq since the end of the Cold War—the First Gulf War, the war of sanctions, and the Second Gulf War. By examining international political discourse from and about Iraq, it shows where war generally and just war specifically are gendered. Through the stories of key just war characters like Jessica Lynch, this book reveals where women are omitted and subordinated in global politics. Sjoberg suggests that dialogue and empathy replace righteousness in just war thinking for the good of human safety everywhere and concludes with alternative visions of Gulf War policies, inspired by feminist just war theory.
