Book excerpt: Cairo the Camel teaches the value of taking on responsibility. Cairo is a young camel who is impatient to prove he can work as hard as the older members of the camel train, but his body is still growing and, for the moment, he is forced to tag along with nothing to do. It takes a special event to show how the young camel can make a contribution and to earn him his place in the team.Cairo has all the energy and optimism of youth and it is his ability to run and chase, push and pull and stand guard through the night, that is finally rewarded. Cairo the camel proves to the rest of the camel train that he is grown-up and responsible enough to carry a load just like all the adult camels. -- About the camel... There are two main kinds of camel and children can be encouraged to look at and draw pictures identifying the main difference. The dromedary, or Arabian camel, has a single hump and the Bactrian camel has two humps. About half of the world's camels are found in Somalia and Ethiopia where they have been domesticated to provide milk, food and transportation. There are wild Bactrian camels in the Gobi Desert in China and Mongolia and wild dromedaries in parts of Australia. The camel's special physical features make it an unusual and interesting animal, and topic suggestions at the back of this book are designed to explore these.

Book excerpt: “A delight to the senses.” —Kirkus Reviews Perfect for fans of The One and Only Ivan, this exquisite middle grade novel from Newbery Honoree and National Book Award finalist Kathi Appelt follows a creaky old camel out to save two baby kestrel chicks during a massive storm in the Texas desert—filled with over a dozen illustrations by Caldecott winner Eric Rohmann. Zada is a camel with a treasure trove of stories to tell. She’s won camel races for the royal Pasha of Smyrna, crossed treacherous oceans to new land, led army missions with her best camel friend by her side, and outsmarted a far too pompous mountain lion. But those stories were from before. Now, Zada wanders the desert as the last camel in Texas. She’s not, however, alone. Two tiny kestrel chicks are nestled in the fluff of fur between her ears—kee-killy-keeing for their missing parents—and a dust storm the size of a mountain is taking Zada on one more grand adventure. And it could lead to this achy old camel’s most brilliant story yet.

Book excerpt: Camel meat has many benefits as a meat product. It has low fat content and is highly nutritious, and has potential to be used to combat hyperacidity, hypertension, pneumonia and respiratory disease. This book reviews up-to-date literature on camel meat and meat products, carcass and meat quality characteristics, muscle structure, post-mortem analysis and the nutritive value to humans. A comparatively small component of global meat consumption, camel meat has the potential to undergo an explosion of production worldwide, and currently farming for camel meat in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia is undergoing significant expansion. The potential of camel meat in helping to meet projected world food shortages, and being sustainably farmed, is also explored by the editors.

Book excerpt: The Camel King When two British children go with their mother to pick up a letter from their father, Ambassador in Egypt, Mr. Bernard, the mail clerk hearing about their trip, tells them about the White Talking Camel that has roamed in the desert from Morocco to Cairo for a thousand years. Onboard the Castle-One, the children hear its captain saying even more stories about the Talking Camel; all known to mariners from African countries. On the largest English ship the Castle-One, Peter, and Sarah, the two siblings begin a serendipitous trip as the Castle-One cruises the Ocean seeking Hercules Strait at the tip of Portugal; from there they stop at Tunis for a one-night rest and as the children roam the market, a cruel man harshly whips an old camel fallen to the ground tired and overburdened with goods on its back. At the cruelty of the man punishing the camel mother and her baby camel whining sadly, both Peter and Sarah protest throwing oranges at the man. The man hit at the face walks to whip the children, but he's stopped in time by the Captain behind.Moments later desert thieves stampede into the market kidnapping children and robbing merchants. Peter and Sarah are taken into a caravan of desert thieves, but the Talking Camel roaming the desert joins the caravan coming to rescue them.163

Book excerpt: Cairo, 1910. Captain Owen, The Mamur Zapt, is the head of Egypt's Political CID in the heyday of British Rule. He is ultimately responsible for law and order in the Khedive's Cairo. When the rules, whether obvious or hidden, are flouted, he steps into action - although it sometimes looks like he's merely stepped sideways, out of the way. Now it is the end of the boom, leaving banks beleaguered and borrowers in trouble whether the poorest land-working fellahin or the richest land-owning Pashas. Then a civil servant suspiciously dies at his desk. The whiff of corruption is in the air. Even Owen, who is supposed to be investigating the affair, appears to be living beyond his means. As he turns to such unlikely allies as the Grand Mufti, the local barber, and the Widow Shawquat, he penetrates to the heart of such sinister organizations as the Khedive's Agricultural Society. The rich are tricky, and money speaks louder than words, challenging Owen to use all his skills to stop the Camel of Destruction....

Book excerpt: The guide described by The New York Times as "indispensable," revised and updated for 2008, fills a vital niche for expatriates and Cairenes alike who need a helping hand to organize--and enjoy--the challenges of a sojourn in Cairo. The basics of daily life--finding a flat, transporting personal goods, investigating school options for children, navigating Egypt's famous bureaucracy, and the intricacies of feeding and clothing oneself and one's family from the local market--are all detailed here. Advice gathered from a wide range of Cairo insiders, both native and foreign, gives the reader a cornucopia of current facts on prices, neighborhoods, product availability, work and business opportunities, and the dizzying range of cultural and leisure pursuits that Cairo is famous for. The format of this edition addresses the needs of independently minded tourists as well as residents by the inclusion of: an A-to-Z directory of goods, services, and interests subdivided by neighborhood; a language section on the basics of Cairene Arabic; and details on shopping and sightseeing from a resident's perspective. Cairo: The Practical Guide, now in its sixteenth edition, is the key to deciphering the complexities of living, working, and enjoying life in one of the world's most exciting and dauntingly complex mega-cities.

Book excerpt: Built as a temporary structure and made of ephemeral materials, "Cairo Street" had a dual nature. On the one hand it was a purely scientific installation, a piece of anthropology. On the other, it became the most popular entertainment venue at the World's Columbian Exposition of Chicago (1893), a place where "people went wild with excitement". Far from being a copy of any actual street, it was an assemblage of authentic architectural elements put together in such a way as to conjure up the atmosphere of the Arab-Islamic metropolis, the city of the Thousand and One Nights. Its impact was greatly enhanced by the presence of local Cairo inhabitants, who plied their trade, some of them with their camels, donkeys, monkeys, and even snakes. The belly dancing on Cairo Street caused an enormous stir: many claimed that it was immoral and called for its immediate suspension; others regarded it as a performance of important scientific and ethnological value. It was never suspended-and people flocked to see it. An immense amount has been written about world's fairs. This monograph represents a novel approach in that it subjects a single project, the Cairo Street, to detailed analysis, placing particular emphasis on interpreting it within the context of the Fair as a whole. What was the great uproar about the belly dancing? What motivated it? In order to answer these questions, this monograph attempts to offer a complex, multi-faceted, interpretation within the context of the society of the time. Cairo Street was the sensation of the World's Columbian Exposition, a fair which many sold their stoves, mortgaged their houses, spent their life savings or their funeral money to see. This monograph is enhanced with a ground plan and 168 illustrations.
