With William Butler Yeats and Edward Martyn, she co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre and the Abbey Theatre, and wrote numerous short works for both companies. Lady Gregory produced a number of books of retellings of stories taken from Irish mythology. Born into a class that identified closely with British rule, her conversion to cultural nationalism, as evidenced by her writings, was emblematic of many of the political struggles to occur in Ireland during her lifetime. Cuchulain of Muirthemne Is a version of the Cu Chulainn legends based on previous oral and written versions as collected and translated by Lady Augusta Gregory. First published in 1902, it is one of the earliest such collections to appear in English. The book covers the lifespan of the hero, from conception to death, and draws on folklore and oral tradition in addition to the stories of the Ulster Cycle.Lady Gregory considered herself a supporter of the Irish Literary Revival, rather than a writer. She recorded in her diary that "I dreamed that I had been writing some article & that W.B.Y. said 'It's not your business to write - Your business is to make an atmosphere'." She undertook the book only after William Butler Yeats refused an offer to translate his own edition of Irish myth. In 1900, a commission on education in Ireland issued a report declaring Irish literature devoid of idealism or imagination.This report, written by Trinity College Professor Robert Atkinson and parroted by Professor John Pentland Mahaffy, infuriated the Gaelic League, its founder Douglas Hyde, and Irish nationalism, including Yeats and Gregory. Later that same year, English publisher Alfred Nutt asked Yeats to compose a collection retelling Irish myth and legend. Yeats refused, excusing himself as being too busy with his own work.[4] Lady Gregory volunteered instead, initially hoping the work might serve as a source of raw material to nationalist poets, as well as a rebuttal to critics of Irish literature like Atkinson and Mahaffy. At first, she lacked confidence in her writing abilities and expected the work to take her a lifetime. After she earned the encouragement of Yeats, the work went to press in less than two years"

Miss Winifred Faraday comes first with her translation of the versions from the Yellow Book of Lecan (Y. B. L.) and the Leabhar na h-Uidhre (L. U.), while we hear from another source that the last sheets of Dr. Windisch's long-promised edition of the Book of Leinster version have passed through the press. Thus, in the course of a few weeks, it will be possible to compare the two main versions of the story side by side. From the purely literary point of view, it is perhaps a pity that the Book of Leinster (L. L.) version has not been published first; it is fuller of detail, more explanatory and more picturesque, and it shows a more poetic sense of the dramatic evolution and sequence of the tale. To give a single example, The Táin or Cattle-raid, which forms the subject of this romance, has been undertaken by Medb, Queen of Connaught, for the purpose of gaining possession of a famous bull owned by a chief of Leinster, and which is coveted by the avaricious Queen. The great number of Irish tales founded on similar themes proves that these romances hail from a period when the country was in a purely pastoral condition, and wealth consisted, not in money or in land, but in cattle and live stock. The acquirement of more cattle was regarded as a fit purpose on which to embark on a lengthy war, and the frequency of these cattle-lifting expeditions must have kept the country in a perpetual state of ferment. Medb (Maive) is represented as a woman of extraordinary vigor and force of character. She openly prides herself on being the better half, both as regards birth, wealth, and fighting qualities, than her spouse, as before her marriage she boasted herself to have been the noblest in her father's house. The interesting "bolster-conversation " which forms the prologue to the Táin in L. L., in which Medb sets forth her attainments and her superior position, is not given in the versions followed by Miss Faraday, and the story thus begins without a sufficient explanation, which this conversation provides, of the cause and meaning of the raid. "As regards wage-giving and largesse, I was the best of them," says Medb; "as regards battle, strife, and combat, I was the best of them. Before me went fifteen hundred royal mercenaries from the ranks of the sons of adventurers, and in the centre an equal number of native chieftains' sons....." Medb is Queen of Connaught in her own right; it is she and not her husband who leads the armies of Ireland, and Ailill has to acquiesce in taking the inferior position of a mere prince-consort to his imperious wife.....

For although you have not to go far to get stories of Finn and Goll and Oisin from any old person in the place, there is very little of the history of Cuchulain and his friends left in the memory of the people, but only that they were brave men and good fighters, and that Deirdre was beautiful.When I went looking for the stories in the old writings, I found that the Irish in them is too hard for any person to read that has not made a long study of it. Some scholars have worked well at them, Irishmen and Germans and Frenchmen, but they have printed them in the old cramped Irish, with translations into German or French or English, and these are not easy for you to get, or to understand, and the stories themselves are confused, every one giving a different account from the others in some small thing, the way there is not much pleasure in reading them. It is what I have tried to do, to take the best of the stories, or whatever parts of each will fit best to one another, and in that way to give a fair account of Cuchulain's life and death.

CHAPTER V.--Emigration of Nemed and the Slaughter of Conan's Tower. I. Origin of Nemed. Hit Arrival in Ireland. Nennius, who had never heard either of Cessair or of Fintan, begins the history of Ireland with the legend of Partholon, setting out with these words: "The Scots came into Ireland from Spain." Partholon, according to him, was the first of these Scots to come into Ireland out of Spain; and after giving some details, already mentioned, upon Partholon, Nennius continues as follows: "The second to come into Ireland was Nimeth, son of a certain Agnoman, who, they say, voyaged over the sea for a year and a half, and then, having suffered shipwreck, took harbour in Ireland. He remained there many years, then, putting to sea again, returned into Spain with his fellows." The word Spain in this text is a learned translation of the Irish words mag mor, "great plain" (1); tray mar, "great strand;" mag meld, " pleasant plain," by which the Irish pagans designated the Land of the Dead, the place whence the living originally came, and their final abode. For these mythological expressions, which testify to the beliefs held in the most primitive ages, Christian euhemerism substituted the name of Spain. The legend of Tuan Mac Cairill leaves no room for doubt on this point: "The number of Nemed's company increased until there were four thousand and thirty men of them and four thousand and thirty women. Then they all died" (2). They all died: that is what an ancient redaction, now lost, rendered as: "They set sail for the Great Plain, for the Great Strand, or the Pleasant Plain," a formula in which Nennius sees indications of a return into Spain. In most of the Irish texts the legend of Nemed is more fully developed than in Nennius or in the brief...
