Book Synopsis Time and radical politics in France by : Alexandra Paulin-Booth
Download or read book Time and radical politics in France written by Alexandra Paulin-Booth and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how people have thought about and experienced time, and how their ideas about time have shaped their political views and actions. Using French thinkers and activists of the radical left and right between the Dreyfus Affair and the First World War as a case study, it argues that time provides an important means of exploring how concepts such as nationalism, revolution and social change were understood at the turn of the century. Attending to different experiences of time – the speed at which it was perceived to move, the extent to which the future was near and graspable, the ways in which the past was seen to impinge on the present – opens up exciting new possibilities for analysing politics, ideologies and worldviews.

Book Synopsis Carnal Spirit by : Matthew W. Maguire
Download or read book Carnal Spirit written by Matthew W. Maguire and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rare for a thinker of Charles Péguy's considerable stature and influence to be so neglected in Anglophone scholarship. The neglect may be in part because so much about Péguy is contestable and paradoxical. He strongly opposed the modern historicist drive to reduce writers to their times, yet he was very much a product of philosophical currents swirling through French intellectual life at the turn of the twentieth century. He was a passionate Dreyfusard who converted to Catholicism but was a consistent anticlerical. He was a socialist and an anti-Marxist, and at once a poet, journalist, and philosopher. Péguy (1873-1914) rose from a modest childhood in provincial France to a position of remarkable prominence in European intellectual life. Before his death in battle in World War I, he founded his own journal in order to publish what he thought most honestly, and urgently, needed to be said about politics, history, philosophy, literature, art, and religion. His writing and life were animated by such questions as: Is it possible to affirm universal human rights and individual freedom and find meaning in a national identity? How should different philosophies and religions relate to one another? What does it mean to be modern? A voice like Péguy's, according to Matthew Maguire, reveals the power of the individual to work creatively with the diverse possibilities of a given historical moment. Carnal Spirit expertly delineates the historical origins of Péguy's thinking, its unique trajectory, and its unusual position in his own time, and shows the ways in which Péguy anticipated the divisions that continue to trouble us.

Book Synopsis The Place de la Bastille by : Keith Reader
Download or read book The Place de la Bastille written by Keith Reader and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bustling Marché d’Aligre market to the comparatively new Opéra Bastille, the Place de la Bastille is among the Paris’s most richly protean areas. Also known as the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the Bastille quarter has long been a bastion of working-class solidarity and a regular site of political agitation—such as the infamous storming of the Bastille. Home to a popular and sometimes raffish nightlife scene in the early twentieth century, it now serves an ethnically and socially mixed community while bearing many traces of its vibrant past. From the earliest days to the present, Keith Reader offers here a fascinating look at the rich historical and cultural geography of the Place de la Bastille. For readers keen to explore this remarkable area firsthand, the book also includes a map and walking tour.

Book excerpt: This absorbing intellectual history vividly recreates the unique social, political, and philosophical milieu in which the extraordinary promise of Einstein and scientific contemporaries took root and flourished into greatness.
