Results of effort applied to tasks during the first quarter effort are described. Highlights include fabrication and evaluation of cells in Mo foil substrates, a new chemical etch method which may allow easy, rapid determination of CdS grain diameters in films, and preparation and preliminary evaluation of cell structures on single crystal CdS substrates. Several problems will require special effort in the future: poor adhesion of CdS film to Zn-plated Cu foil substrates and a high incidence of film defects attributed to particle spatter from the CdS evaporation source.

Book excerpt: The development of the planar junction CdS/Cu2S solar cell has been continued. Experiments have been conducted with varying thicknesses of Cu2S to determine whether the need for light trapping can be reduced by utilizing thick Cu2S layers. Further optical analysis of the influence of texturing on light trapping in the cell have been conducted. In Task 2, the development of a (CdZn)S/Cu2S cell, a major effort has been expended in determining the details of the junction morphology. A wide range of analytical work has continued under Task 3. Preliminary data has been obtained on cells sealed behind sheet glass and cells with integral electron beam evaporated glass coatings.

Book excerpt: Progress has been made on improving the photon efficiency of the planar CdS/Cu2S solar cell. Current in excess of 20 mA/cm2 have been achieved. Mixed sulfide solar cells responsive to heat treatment are now being produced. The morphology of the Cu2S/CdZnS junction has been examined and found to be significantly different than the morphology on CdS/Su2S cells. Efficiencies measured under ELH simulation approaching 8% have been achieved. Work in the analytical task has focused on establishing the experimental techniques to study the trap levels in the CdS and to provide a working model for the voltage instabilities in some (CdZn)S/Cu2S cells. Cells under roof top exposure continue to be monitored.
