Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers presented at the seventeenth Colloquiumon Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP) held jointly with the European Symposium on Programming (ESOP) in Rennes, France, February 26-28, 1992 (the proceedings of ESOP appear in LNCS 582). The previous colloquia were held in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Denmark and England. Every even year, as in 1992, CAAP is held jointly with ESOP; every other year, it is part of TAPSOFT (Theory And Practice of SOFTware development). In the beginning, CAAP was devoted to algebraic and combinatorial properties of trees and their role in various fields of computer science. The scope of CAAP has now been extended to other discrete structures, like graphs, equations and transformations of graphs, and their links with logical theories. The programme committee received 40 submissions, from which 19 papers have been selected for inclusion inthis volume.

Book excerpt: This book offers readers a broad view of research in some Western and Eastern European countries on pattern and signal analysis, and on coding, handling and measurement of images. It is a selection of refereed papers from two sources: first, a satellite conference within the biannual International Conference on Pattern Recognition held in Rome, November 14-17, 1988, and second, work done at the International Basic Laboratory on Image Processing and Computer Graphics, Berlin, GDR. The papers are grouped into three sections. The first section contains new proposals for the specific computation of particular features of digital images and the second section is devoted to the introduction and testing of general approaches to the solution of problems met in digital geometry, image coding, feature extraction and object classification. The third section illustrates some recent practical results obtained on real images specifically in character and speech recognition as well as in biomedicine. All the techniques illustrated in this book will find direct application in the near future. This book should interest and stimulate the reader, provoke new thoughts and encourage further research in this widely appealing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, the formal theory of specification, verfication and development of real-time programs has grown from work of a few specialized groups to a real "bandwagon". Many eminent research groups have shifted their interests in this direction. Consequently, research in real-time is now entering established research areas in formal methods, such as process algebra, temporal logic, and model checking. This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop dedicated to the theory of real-time with the purpose of stepping back and viewing the results achieved as well as considering the directions of ongoing research. The volume gives a representative picture of what is going on in the field worldwide, presented by eminent, active researchers. The material in the volume was prepared by the authors after the workshop took place and reflects the results of the workshop discussions.

Book excerpt: Free radicals, which are key intermediates in many thermal, photochemical and radiation processes, are important for a proper understanding of fundamental natural processes and the successful development of organic syntheses. Volume II/18 serves as a supplement and extension to volume II/13 and covers rate constants and other kinetic data of free radical reactions in liquids. Furthermore II/18 contains new chapters on reactions of radicals in excited states and of carbenes, nitrenes and analogues. Selected species in aqueous solutions for which other compilations are available were deliberately omitted as before, and for the same reason electron transfer equilibria of organic radicals were not covered.

The emphasis was on conceptual, theoretical and formal aspects, as well as practical aspects and sound experience, since such a viewpoint was deemed indispensible to investigate and establish a basis for future development. This volume contains 12 papers selected from 25 presented at the workshop, together with a paper by J.A. Goguen, who was an invited speaker at the workshop. The papers are classified into four categories: Formal methods (1): three papers are concerned with the formal semantics of concurrent objects based on process calculi. Formal methods (2): four papers are concerned with various formal approaches to the semantics of concurrent programs. Concurrent programming: three papers. Models: three papers areconcerned with models for concurrent systems.

Book excerpt: Mathematicians have long recognized the distinction between an argument showing that an interesting object exists and a procedure for actually constructing the object. Computer science adds a new dimension of interest in constructivity, since a computer program is a formal description of a constructive procedure that can be executed automatically. It has beenover a decade since a conference was devoted to constructivity, and never before has one been held specifically relating computer science to constructivity. Thus, this proceedings volume is the most concentrated offering ever produced of the diverse ways in which constructivity and computer science are related. The papers cover semantics and type theory, logic and theorem proving, real and complex analysis, topology and combinatorics, nonconstructive graph-theoretical techniques, and curriculum and pedagogic issues. The book offers a concentrated view of the many ways in which constructivity has assumed importance in computer science, and contains results available nowhere else.

This book was released on 1992-12-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of graph grammars is theoretically attractive and well motivated byvarious applications. More than 20 years ago, the concept of graph grammars was introduced by A. Rosenfeld as a formulation of some problems in pattern recognition and image processing, as well as by H.J. Schneider as a method for data type specification. Within graph-grammar theory one maydistinguish the set-theoretical approach, the algebraic approach, and the logical approach. These approaches differ in the method in which graph replacement is described. Specific approaches, node replacement and hyperedge replacement, concern the basic units of a hypergraph, nodes and hyperedges. This monograph is mainly concerned with the hyperedge-replacement approach. Hyperedge-replacement grammars are introduced as a device for generating hypergraph languages including graph languages and string languages. The concept combines a context-free rewriting with a comparatively large generative power. The volume includes a foreword by H. Ehrig.
