These devices are the lifeline to their education yet malfunction is not uncommon. It is only the student who, with training, will be able to recognize and report when an issue occurs and can deal with it in the most timely manner. Building Skills for Independence in the Mainstream provides IEP goals and step-by-step materials to provide students with the skills they need to be independent with their hearing aids and to advocate for their listening and communication needs in the classroom. A hierarchy of expected skills by grade with specific activities for each has been included. Geared for students in preschool through elementary, this book will benefit parents and teachers who work with these children. The role of the student, classroom teacher and the teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing has been defined for each goal. The book has engaging color pages and also includes 51 downloadable files for easy sharing with classroom teachers and to facilitate skill-building by students.Purchase from http://successforkidswithhearingloss.com/buildingskills_independence

Book excerpt: The purpose of this guide is to address the knowledge areas and skills impacted by hearing loss and to describe assessment procedures to identify the adverse educational effect of hearing loss in these areas. It is not the intent of this guide to include all assessment instruments that could be used to identify the areas of strengths and needs of students with hearing loss. It has been developed to provide a framework for school teams and professionals specializing in the education of students with hearing loss to use when assessing the unique needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. These assessments can be used as part of the evaluation process to determine eligibility, as tools for developing specific goals and objectives, or as a measure of pre- and post-instruction performance. Expected development in the expanded core knowledge and skills is also a significant consideration when determining the impact of the hearing loss on school performance and will therefore be integrated into the assessment process described.

Book excerpt: "For students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) and Learning Disabilities (LD), the transition from high school to adult life can be especially difficult. Research suggests that students who have been taught self-advocacy skills and are given the opportunity to practice and generalize these skills often have an easier time transitioning and are more successful in their post-secondary endeavors. The purpose of this thesis is to explore literature on self-advocacy skills, available curricula, and programs that successfully implement self-advocacy strategies. These include: Self-Determination Synthesis Project, Learning Education about Disabilities Program (LEAD), the Self-Advocacy Strategy, Hypermedia Program, and the Threshold Program."--leaf 4.

In addition to adjusting to increased academic demands in an environment where there is less structure and support, students have to navigate a disability services system that is very different from the one they knew in high school. But with the proper preparation, students can enjoy success! This practical guide explains how the system for accommodations works, describes students' rights and responsibilities within that system, and employs the voices of seasoned professionals and college students to explain the skills and strategies students should develop while they are in high school to ensure success when they reach college. As a bonus, it also offers answers to questions students with disabilities frequently ask about disclosing their disability in the admissions process.

Book excerpt: After graduating high school, students with IEPs are expected to advocate for themselves in a variety of situations without assistance. Research has shown that there is an importance and a need for the explicit teaching of self-advocacy strategies in order to help students with disabilities prepare for their transition after graduation. One of the most effective strategies found in the research is the Self-Advocacy and Conflict Resolution (SACR) intervention which can be implemented and modified for use with high schools and college students with disabilities. In this study, seven high school juniors and seniors participated in roleplays to determine the impact of the SACR intervention on their ability to self-advocate when they experience conflict over accommodations. Additionally, this study looked at student perceptions of their self-confidence while advocating. Through the use of student surveys, teacher checklists, student checklists, and student focus group responses, data showed that students grew in their demonstration SACR skills and in their confidence from baseline to their final roleplay. Students also demonstrated that practice and conflict resolution strategies helped them persevere through roleplays and become more confident in their self-advocacy skills over time. It was concluded that practice in self-advocacy strategies can help students become more confident in their ability to self-advocate. It was also found that it is important for students to experience refusal from adults in order to prepare them for conflict resolution.
