Download or read book Possession written by Erin L. Thompson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of private art collectors' passion from Roman times to the present Whether it's the discovery of $1.6 billion in Nazi-looted art or the news that Syrian rebels are looting UNESCO archaeological sites to buy arms, art crime commands headlines. Erin Thompson, America's only professor of art crime, explores the dark history of looting, smuggling, and forgery that lies at the heart of many private art collections and many of the world's most renowned museums. Enlivened by fascinating personalities and scandalous events, Possession shows how collecting antiquities has been a way of creating identity, informed by a desire to annex the past while providing an illicit thrill along the way. Thompson's accounts of history's most infamous collectors--from the Roman Emperor Tiberius, who stole a life-sized nude Greek statue for his bedroom, to Queen Christina of Sweden, who habitually pilfered small antiquities from her fellow aristocrats, to Sir William Hamilton, who forced his mistress to enact poses from his collection of Greek vases--are as mesmerizing as they are revealing.
Download or read book The Mind Possessed written by Emma Cohen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-08-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cognitive science of religion has made a persuasive case for the view that a number of different psychological systems are involved in the construction and transmission of notions of extranatural agency such as deities and spirits. Until now this work has been based largely on findings in experimental psychology, illustrated mainly with hypothetical or anecdotal examples. In The Mind Possessed, Emma Cohen considers how the psychological systems undergirding spirit concepts are activated in real-world settings. Spirit possession practices have long had a magnetizing effect on academic researchers but there have been few, if any, satisfactory theoretical treatments of spirit possession that attempt to account for its emergence and spread globally. Drawing on ethnographic data collected during eighteen months of fieldwork in Belém, northern Brazil, Cohen combines fine-grained descriptions and analyses of mediumistic activities in an Afro-Brazilian cult house with a scientifically-grounded explanation for the emergence and spread of ideas about spirits, possession and healing. Cohen shows why spirit possession and its associated activities are inherently attention-grabbing. Making a radical departure from traditional anthropological, medicalist and sociological analyses, she argues that a cognitive approach offers more precise and testable hypotheses concerning the spread and appeal of spirit concepts and possession activities. This timely book presents new lines of enquiry for the cognitive science of religion (a rapidly growing field of interdisciplinary scholarship) and challenges the theoretical frameworks within which spirit possession practices have traditionally been understood.

Book excerpt: My father always said fear was a weakness. Well, that's easy to say when you don't have to worry about vampire slayers or holy water. I hate fear, but undead life goes on. In the two months since I was attacked in the hospital morgue and turned into a vampire, I've killed my evil sire, Cyrus, fallen in love with my new sire, Nathan, and have even gotten used to drinking blood. Just when things are finally returning to normal—as normal as they can be when sunlight can kill you—Nathan becomes possessed. And then he slaughters an innocent human. Now it's my job to find Nathan before the Voluntary Vampire Extinction Movement does, because they're just waiting for an excuse to terminate him—and anyone foolish enough to help him. But it gets worse. It turns out that Nathan's been possessed by one of the most powerful and wicked vampires alive—the Soul Eater. And who knows what vile plan he's concocted? With the Soul Eater and my possessed sire on the loose, I have a lot to fear. Including being killed. Again.

Book excerpt: One Friday night in Chicago, two friends leave their neighborhood bar, each heading home in a separate direction. Phillip Matt never makes it. When he stops to assist a man who appears to be in need of help, the crazed assailant stabs Matt in the heart. In another part of town, George Gilmer is experiencing some troubling problems of his own. The talented young carpenter's behavior drastically changes after several bouts of severe abdominal pains, and he begins displaying symptoms such as paranoia, forgetfulness, and violent mood swings. When both men wind up at the same hospital on that fateful October night, the pieces of the crime slowly fall into place-or so it seems. Though he remembers nothing, it was George's knife that killed the man and it's his blood on the dead man's body. With the evidence mounting against him, George is formally accused and must stand trial for first-degree murder. With its dramatic climax, Possessed leads the reader into a world where the human capacity for evil extends beyond belief-into a world where it's nearly impossible to draw the line between innocence and insanity.

Book Synopsis The Grammar of Possession by : Maura Velázquez-Castillo
Download or read book The Grammar of Possession written by Maura Velázquez-Castillo and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-12-19 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grammar of Possession: Inalienability, incorporation and possessor ascension in Guaraní, is an exhaustive study of linguistic structures in Paraguayan Guaraní which are directly or indirectly associated with the semantic domain of inalienability. Constructions analyzed in the book include adnominal and predicative possessive constructions, noun incorporation, and possessor ascension. Examples are drawn from a rich data base that incorporate native speaker intuitions and resources in the construction of illustrative linguistic forms as well as the analysis of the communicative use of the forms under study. The book provides a complete picture of inalienability as a coherent integrated system of grammatical and semantic oppositions in a language that has received little attention in the theoretical linguistic literature. The analysis moves from general principles to specific details of the language while applying principles of Cognitive Grammar and Functional Linguistics. There is an explicit aim to uncover the particularities of form-meaning connections, as well as the communicative and discourse functions of the structures examined. Other approaches are also considered when appropriate, resulting in a theoretically informed study that contains a rich variety of considerations.
Download or read book Adverse Possession written by Kirk Marty and published by Strategic Book Publishing Rights Agency. This book was released on 2016 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cautionary tale of a big real estate deal gone bad: A cesspool’s brew of money, mud, murder, and blood. After a messy break-up with his old law firm, young attorney Nick Shuman gets in over his head, when he takes on a big case brought by a small but wealthy California landowner. It’s 2007 and the price of real estate is exploding. Shuman’s new client, Joe Munoz, is being sued by a large insurance company with an army of attorneys looking to complete a massive development deal in an unspoiled corner of Southern California. Only Joe and his key piece of land, “Little Rocking-Horse Ranch,” stand in the way. But Joe has a past that adds a wild card to the mix: an unsolved, decades-old murder tied to him and the ranch, and his murky reasons for refusing to sell it for the huge sum offered. To fend off their mighty foes and launch their own quest to tilt against the windmills of Big Business and Institutionalized Power, Nick and Joe assemble a rag-tag cast of unlikely allies and characters. In a constant game of catch-up, things get dirty fast. A high-powered, crooked law firm and the Russian mob complicate matters for the under-manned defenders of “Little Ranch.” The stakes rise faster than the real estate market, as evidence disappears, and lives and loves are cut down or ruined. The September 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers and the inescapable crush of The Great Recession shatter this deadly struggle for everyone.
