Forests form the natural vegetation over much of the Earth’s land, and they are critical for the survival of innumerable organisms. The ongoing loss of natural forests, which in some regions may have taken many millennia to develop, is one of the main reasons for the decline of biodiversity. Preventing the further destruction of forests and protecting species and ecosystems within forests have become central issues for environmental agencies, forest managers, and gove- ments. In this di?cult task science has an important role in informing policy and management as to how to go about this. So how do industrial and other pl- tation forests ?t into this? Plantation forests, comprised of rows of planted trees that may be destined for pulp or sawmills after only a few years of growth, appear to have little to c- tribute to the conservation of biodiversity. Yet there is more to this than meets the eye (of the casual observer), and there are indeed numerous opportunities, and often untapped potential, for biodiversity conservation in plantation forestry. With plantation forests expanding at a rate of approximately three million hectares per year, it is crucial to understand how plantations can make a positive contribution to biodiversity conservation and how the potentially negative impacts of this land use can be minimised. That is the topic of this book.

With lands as varied as the high peaks near Flagstaff and the low desert near Yuma, it's difficult to know where to go for the best butterfly watching. Arizona's extreme range of climate also makes it difficult to plan a trip to coincide with the short flight times of many species. All these factors make this book essential-it approaches finding butterflies by species, by region, and by season. Want to know where and when to find an Ares Metalmark? This book will tell you. Want to know where to find butterflies near Tucson? All the best spots are described for you. Going to be in Arizona in June? With this book you'll know where to go. Finding Butterflies in Arizona, the second in a series of Spring Creek Press state guides, is an indispensable book for all butterfly enthusiasts living in or traveling to this butterfly-rich state. It's the next best thing to having a local guide. Book jacket.

Instead, the author focuses on one year, 1963. This was the most productive year of the period 1958-64, the transition between the Fifties and Sixties. The author also focuses on one other place---Greenwich Village in lower Manhattan. For it was primarily here, in a place already historically and culturally mythologized as avant-garde terrain, that the emerging generation of vanguard artists lived, worked, socialized, and remade the history of the avant-garde. - from the Introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Marsh Book of the Year Award 2012 by theBritish Ecological Society. In A Resource-Based Habitat View for Conservation RogerDennis introduces a novel approach to the understanding of habitatsbased on resources and conditions required by organisms and theiraccess to them, a quantum shift from simplistic andineffectual notions of habitats as vegetation units or biotopes. Indrawing attention to what organisms actually use and need inlandscapes, it focuses on resource composition, structure andconnectedness, all of which describe habitat quality and underpinlandscape heterogeneity. This contrasts with the current bipolarview of landscapes made up of habitat patches and empty matrix butillustrates how such a metapopulation approach of isolatedpatchworks can grow by adopting the new habitat viewpoint. The book explores principles underlying this newdefinition of habitat, and the impact of habitat components onpopulations, species’ distributions, geographical ranges andrange changes, with a view to conserving resources in landscapesfor whole communities. It does this using the example ofbutterflies - the most alluring of insects, flagship organisms andkey indicators of environmental health - in the British Isles, where they have been studied most intensively. The book formsessential reading for students, researchers and practitioners inecology and conservation, particularly those concerned withmanaging sites and landscapes for wildlife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands are special places; they can be havens for unique plants and animals and refuges for wildlife. This book investigates the biogeography of butterfly species over the British islands, particularly the factors that influence their presence on the islands and that have made each island's butterfly fauna distinctive. The book contains a full log of records of species on the islands and much supporting information. The first three chapters set the scene, illustrating the basics of island biogeography theory, their changing circumstances during the current Holocene interglacial, and studies of natural history of British butterflies that mark the islands as the most intensively studied region for wildlife in the world. The book advances by increasing resolution downscale from a European continental perspective, through patterns and changes on the British mainland, a comparison of the two dominant islands of Britain and Ireland, to a close inspection of the dynamics of species on the multitude of offshore islands. Detailed investigations include contrasts in species' richness on the islands and then of the incidences of each species. Case studies highlight the continual turnover of species on islands. Attention is then given to evolutionary changes since the time that glaciers enveloped Europe. A powerful message is conveyed for the maintenance of butterfly species on the smaller British islands now experiencing population losses at a rate unprecedented since the spread of the last ice sheets: the incontrovertible importance of maintaining populations of species on nearby mainland sources for islands as pools for future migrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sounding Out: Pauline Oliveros and Lesbian Musicality examines the musical career of the avant-garde composer, accordionist, whose radical innovations of the 1960s, 70s and 80s have redefined the aesthetic and formal parameters of American experimental music. While other scholars have studied Oliveros as a disciple of John Cage and a contemporary of composers Terry Riley, Lou Harrison, Gordon Mumma, and Robert Ashley, Sounding Out resituates Pauline Oliveros in a gynecentric network of feminist activists, writers, artists and musicians. This book shows how the women in Oliveros’s life were central sources of creative energy and exchange during a crucial moment in feminist and queer cultural history. Crafting a dynamic relationship between feminism and music-making, this book offers a queerly original analysis of Oliveros’s work as a musical form of feminist activism and argues for the productive role of experimental music in lesbian feminist theory. Sounding Out combines key elements of feminist theories of lesbian sexuality with Oliveros’s major compositions, performances, critical essays, and interviews. It also includes previously unpublished correspondence between Oliveros and Edith Guttierez, Jill Johnston, Annea Lockwood, Kate Millett, and Jane Rule.
