Book Synopsis Peace is Everyone's Business by : Lowell Ewert
Download or read book Peace is Everyone's Business written by Lowell Ewert and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of this book is very simple. While acknowledging that much progress has been made since the end of World War II to improve life conditions for billions of people and reduce the likelihood of war, current global challenges threaten to undermine, undo, or even reverse much of the progress made. Growing political and social polarization, and the resultant increasing fear of each other, is on a trajectory that could cause unprecedented harm. The book illustrates how everyone can have an impact on peace and that many already do so in both constructive and negative ways, illustrated by many examples. The book offers an expansive view of peace, which includes promoting human rights, identifying and resolving situations of slow violence, working to promote fair and sustainable economic development, identifying and resolving injustices, and establishing institutions and practices for resolving conflicts by communicative means. The book especially focuses on the role universities can and should play in promoting peace. Universities, which have played a pivotal role in creating a more humane and just world through their research, teaching and scholarship, now face the challenge of thoughtfully examining how each discipline and vocation and the university as a whole can contribute to fostering peace. In general, universities help to prepare students actively to work for peace by cultivating their capacities at reasoning and reflecting, developing their skills in communicating and research, and fostering among them an active awareness of their responsibilities as citizens of the world. While not every discipline or vocation shares the same level of responsibility to advance peace, all have the potential to do so as they intentionally and thoughtfully look for avenues to do so.

Book Synopsis God, People and Power in Malawi by : C. Ross
Download or read book God, People and Power in Malawi written by C. Ross and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1992 and 1994 Malawi underwent a remarkable transition from dictatorship to democracy. Truly a transformation of power! Yet this period of profound change raised many issues of power and accountability. In this book some of the key questions are explained and addressed from a theological perspective. The work originated as a case study on the World Council of Churches Theology of Life programme. It was then presented as a Kachere Monograph in the belief that it will not only contribute to the reconstruction of politic in Malawi but also be an important resource for all those concerned with the formation of a viable theology of power for todays world. It is now presented here again as a Luviri Reprint. The contributors are all drawn from the University of Malawi Department of Theology and Religious Studies. Kenneth Ross has written on The Transformation of Power in Malawi 1992-94: the Role of the Christian Churches and A Practical Theology of Power for the New Malawi; Felix Chingota on The Use of the Bible in Social Transformation; Isabel Apawo Phiri on Marching, Suspended and Stoned: Christian Women in Malawi 1995; James Tengatenga on Young People: Participation or Alienation? An Anglican Case; J.C. Chankanza and Hilary Mijoga on Muslim Perspectives on Power; Hilary Mijoga on Christian Experience in Malawi Prisons; and Klaus Fiedler on Power at the Receiving End: the Jehovas Witnesses Experience in One-Party Malawi and Even in the Church the Exercise of Power is Accountable to God.

Book excerpt: This is the first of three background papers produced to inform the series of three virtual roundtables entitled ‘Stepping up: Everyone Around the Table for Better Nutrition and Sustainable Healthy Diets: FAO/GAIN Roundtables with the Private Sector on Healthy Diets’ which took place in July-2020. These papers and roundtables are intended to highlight current understandings, gaps and misconceptions about engaging with businesses in the food system. Together with all stakeholders we hope to identify paths leading to healthy diets for everyone, everywhere. STEP 1 (this paper) unpacks the role of the private sector, especially of SMEs, in sustainably nourishing the world. It reinforces the growing consensus that food systems, and the SME activities within them, must be transformed by stakeholders from all sectors.

Book Synopsis The development Situation in Malawi by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: International Development Committee
Download or read book The development Situation in Malawi written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: International Development Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government should re-instate its programme of General Budget Support for Malawi, according to MPs on the International Development Committee. The Department for International Development (DFID) suspended General Budget Support to Malawi - the provision of funds directly to the Malawian exchequer - in July 2011, preferring to provide its aid by other means. This decision was taken in response to the policies of the then President of Malawi, Bingu wa Mutharika. His policies had created an economic and political crisis, whilst his authoritarian tendencies were becoming ever more apparent: the UK's High Commissioner had been expelled from Malawi for criticising Mutharika. However, following the death of President Mutharika in April this year, his successor - President Joyce Banda - has begun to reverse many of his policies. The currency has been devalued, whilst the new Government has indicated its intention to repeal many of its predecessor's authoritarian measures. Subject to the continued progress of reforms, general budget support is likely to be the most efficient way of providing aid to Malawi.
