Book excerpt: This research project assesses the extent to which religion influences standards and behaviour in business, by comparing Islamic banking to co-operative banking as carried out by both Christians and Muslims. The study argues that Islamic banks are particular in the kind of products they offer, namely the Islamic financial instruments. On the other hand, it is the organisation which is key to co-operative banks. An empirical investigation of over 100 banks has revealed that Islamic banks are conventional banks with a product range modified according to Islamic religious law. Co-operative banks operate so as 'to help the poor', an objective in line with both Islamic and Christian ethics. The book demonstrates that Muslims and Christians can work together to foster development and to overcome poverty by referring to common ethical standards in business.

Values are assumptions regarding what is good, right, or important. Ethical systems involve codes of conduct and values that externally form a group of people’s behaviour. Ethical systems are often based on religion and religion expresses ethical principles. Measured by percentage of world population in 2010, Christianity (31.4%) is the biggest religion, followed by Islam (23.2%). By 2050, however, the Islamic population will be approximately equivalent to the number of Christians. The following section describes how those two religions and their ethics impact on international business.

Following recent studies, this study discerns between religious beliefs, commitment as well as participation and conjectures that religious participation alone does not have an effect on ethical conduct, but only in interaction with religious beliefs or religious commitment. Furthermore it is proposed that religious people are stricter when it comes to misbehavior in private contexts, but equally strict as non-religious people when the victim of that behavior is society. Using a large Dutch population sample, this study indicates that the effect of a religious attitude in terms of affection or cognition to be stronger when church services are attended regularly. In accordance with expectations, religious adherence and a strong religious commitment are found to have a significantly negative influence on the acceptance of unethical behavior. However, contrary to prior expectations, religious beliefs alone seem to have a positive impact on the willingness to justify certain transgressions. Looking at the victim of misbehavior, the results do not imply a general tendency that religious people discern more between misbehavior in private and in public contexts than non-religious people do.

Pointing to the polarization that surrounds disputes like Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, David argues that such cases need not involve pitting flesh-and-blood individuals against the rights of so-called “corporate moral persons.” Instead, David proposes that such disputes should be resolved by attending to the moral quality of group actions. This approach shifts attention away from polarizing rights-talk and towards the virtues required for thriving civic communities. More radically, however, this approach suggests that groups themselves should not be viewed as things or “persons” in the first instance, but rather as occasions of coordinated activity. Discerned in the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, this reconceptualization helps illuminate the moral stakes of a novel—and controversial—form of religious freedom.

Book excerpt: There is much debate regarding the level of ethical responsibility a business has to its local community as well as to society as a whole. Although extensive research has been published in the U.S. on this debate (e.g., Carroll, 1999; Daft, 2003; Wherther and Chandler, 2006), related studies have not been conducted within Utah. To remedy this gap, we investigated employee perceptions of the ethical and social responsibilities of businesses, their organization's related actions and priorities, and their own related actions and behaviors in the workplace. The overall purpose of this research study was to better understand how Utah workers feel about business ethics and corporate social responsibility. The larger study (Madsen, 2011; [1]) had nine areas of focus, namely, (1) corporate social responsibility (CSR) [2], (2) treatment of customers and clients, (3) treatment of employees, (4) legal compliance, (5) "going green" [3], (6) moral agency, (7) multiple values, (8) endurance of threats and (9) moral goals. The survey also asked a few questions about employee perceptions of multi-level marketing (MLM). The demographics explored included age, marital status, highest education level, workplace location, ethnicity, yearly household income, position in organization, industry, hours worked per week, religion, and religious activity. The survey had 295 participants who consisted of workers of various ages and both genders working in Salt Lake and Utah Counties. A Likert-type scale ("1" through "7") for survey question responses was used. The purpose of this paper is to briefly share findings specifically related to two demographic variables: religion and gender.
