Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade unions worldwide face a powerful paradox at this critical juncture: collective organisations for workers are urgently needed and yet there are serious pressures undercutting the legitimate role of trade unions. The aim of this book is to examine how trade unions can effectively navigate this deeply contradictory challenge. It is underpinned by the conviction that trade unions are – and should be – vital institutions for democracy and social justice. Written by leading scholars in industrial relations and labour law as well as those in political philosophy and political science, the collection tackles a range of pressing topics for trade unions including: the climate crisis; the COVID-19 pandemic; economic democracy; democracy within trade unions; precarious work; and election campaigns.

Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular conceptions hold that capitalism is driven almost entirely by the pursuit of profit and self-interest. Challenging that assumption, this major new study of American business associations shows how market and non-market relations are actually profoundly entwined at the heart of capitalism. In Solidarity in Strategy, Lyn Spillman draws on rich documentary archives and a comprehensive data set of more than four thousand trade associations from diverse and obscure corners of commercial life to reveal a busy and often surprising arena of American economic activity. From the Intelligent Transportation Society to the American Gem Trade Association, Spillman explains how business associations are more collegial than cutthroat, and how they make capitalist action meaningful not only by developing shared ideas about collective interests but also by articulating a disinterested solidarity that transcends those interests. Deeply grounded in both economic and cultural sociology, Solidarity in Strategy provides rich, lively, and often surprising insights into the world of business, and leads us to question some of our most fundamental assumptions about economic life and how cultural context influences economic.

Book excerpt: The author is convinced that there is a ruling class in America today. He examines the American power structure as it has developed in the 1980s. He presents systematic, empirical evidence that a fixed group of privileged people dominates the American economy and government. The book demonstrates that an upper class comprising only one-half of one percent of the population occupies key positions within the corporate community. It shows how leaders within this "power elite" reach government and dominate it through processes of special-interest lobbying, policy planning and candidate selection. It is written not to promote any political ideology, but to analyze our society with accuracy.

The unique perspective of this text was created specifically with the student in mind and focuses on being reader-friendly and paralegal centered. There is a strong emphasis on the role of the paralegal in helping to create different business organizations, and the focus is on building a strong foundation on theory followed up with reinforcing practical examples and applications. There are learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter to clarify the goal of the chapter, and important terms are bolded and defined upon first use in order to highlight legal terminology. Ethical blocks were created to encourage discussion of ethical issues throughout the text, and there are many case excerpts included to lead to a more thorough exploration of business law issues. Not only are the various models of business organizations explored, but also the critical role played by the paralegal and the legal team in creating and maintaining those organizations. This along with a clear balance between theory and application as well as multiple learning tools, makes Business Organizations and Corporate Law the ideal text and reference. Book excerpt: Background Development of Trade and Commerce 7 The development of the PB Sector is largely a result of the increased trade and commerce along with an increase in the labour force in Hong Kong during the 20th century. [...] "Today the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce are among the oldest and the most Professional and Industry/Business Organizations, Trade Unions 84 influential trade and industrial associations in Hong Kong. [...] In the absence of an electoral system based on universal suffrage, the participation of the PB Sector and its involvement in policy formulation, largely though networks of consultative committees and advisory bodies, effectively constitutes an intermediary between the Government and the people and helps bring a democratic element into the political process. [...] Studies on the effect of trade unions on the development of social issues in Hong Kong include a review of the development of the social welfare system and the reorganization of medical services27. [...] While the PB Sector does not ask the Government to become involved in undertaking tasks performed by the sector, it does believe that through recognition of the sector's work, the Government could help to build awareness of the contribution that the PB Sector is making to society.
