Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have I not, having kept a man for years, learnt that it's/ like raising a snake?/ So many animals on this earth, why keep a man of all things?' writes one of the world's most celebrated writers, Taslima Nasrin, in her first-ever comprehensive collection of poetry translated from the original Bangla into English. The poems get to the heart of being the other in exile, justifying one's place in a terrifying world. They praise the comfort and critique the cruelty of a loved one. In these are loneliness, sorrow, and at times, exaltation. Relying almost entirely upon the free verse form, these poems carry a diction which is at once both gentle and fierce, revealing the experiences of one woman while defining the existence of so many generations of women throughout time, and around the world.

Huang is amazing."—Patrick Rothfuss Burning Roses is a gorgeous fairy tale of love and family, of demons and lost gods, for fans of Zen Cho and Neon Yang. Rosa, also known as Red Riding Hood, is done with wolves and woods. Hou Yi the Archer is tired, and knows she’s past her prime. They would both rather just be retired, but that’s not what the world has ready for them. When deadly sunbirds begin to ravage the countryside, threatening everything they’ve both grown to love, the two must join forces. Now blessed and burdened with the hindsight of middle age, they begin a quest that’s a reckoning of sacrifices made and mistakes mourned, of choices and family and the quest for immortality. Book excerpt: In 1915 the first euphoria of the war has worn off, but the nation is more determined than ever to win. When Ned is sent to the Front ahead of his battalion, Jessie, already involved in various charity works, feels the need to do more and becomes an auxiliary nurse. But life on the wards is harder than she expects. Meanwhile, Helen and Jack settle in a home of their own at last, and Helen takes on a surprise war role of her own. And for Violet in London, a chance meeting with talented young artist threatens to destroy her calm and ordered life. With stalemate on the Eastern Front, everything now hangs on the new September offensive on the Western Front, the Battle of Loos. Both Ned and Bertie will be leading their men over the top, leaving the rest of the family to pray for their safe return.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of fairy tales: “The Bound Princess” (a longer work in six parts), “The Crown’s Warranty,” “The Wishing Pot,” “The Feeding of the Emigrants,” and “The Passionate Puppets.” The Field of Clover is a collaboration between Laurence and Clemence Annie Housman, brother and sister. Laurence wrote the text and drew the original illustrations, which were then engraved by Clemence. Also, the subject matter of the book demonstrates the Victorian fascination with the supernatural and themes of transformation. Women recite spells to turn into flowers; a great worm drinks a boy’s breath through a magical ring. The language is rich and vivid, and the stories themselves often impart moral lessons. The Field of Clover, along with several of Laurence Housman's other works, was collected into a larger volume called Moonshine & Clover by the New York printers Harcourt, Brace, & Company, in 1922 -------------------------- Laurence Housman turned more and more to writing after his eyesight began to fail. His first literary success came with the novel An Englishwoman's Love-letters (1900), published anonymously. He then turned to drama with Bethlehem (1902) and was to become best known and remembered as a playwright. His other dramatic works include Angels and Ministers (1921), Little Plays of St. Francis (1922) and Victoria Regina (1934) which was even staged on Broadway. Housman's play, Pains and Penalties, about Queen Caroline, was produced by Edith Craig and the Pioneer Players. In his time he wrote 10 novels and 25 pieces of short fiction, including fairy tales, 54 plays, 13 volumes of verse and at least 23 pieces of non-Fiction. --------------------------- KEYWORDS/TAGS: Field of Clover, Fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, storyteller, childrens stories, fables, bound princess, fire-eaters, galloping plough, thirsty well, princess melilot, burning rose, camphor worm, crown's warranty, wishing-pot, feeding, emigrants, passionate, puppets, Laurence Housman, Clemence Housman, illustrations, engravings, collaboration, moonshine,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book looks at the impact that the idea and institution of nationhood have had on the constituents of India in the contemporary postcolonial period. It provides a critical analysis through a variety of perspectives––historical, philosophical, literary, and gendered, and locates the nation and its “discontents”, along with its nationalist agenda firmly within the context of the contemporary perceived modernity. The book also engages with the colonial legacy that the ‘nation’ had to endure for two hundred years. It discusses key themes such as nationalism in the contemporary Indian context, the concept of Hindutva, Islam nationalism, and queer nationalism. An important contribution, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of India studies, Indian politics, Third World studies, postcolonial studies, gender studies, nation studies, and history.
