Book excerpt: Selected for the 2009 National Poetry Series by Natasha Trethewey Set in southern New Mexico, where her family's multicultural history is deeply rooted, the poems in Carrie Fountain's first collection explore issues of progress, history, violence, sexuality, and the self. Burn Lake weaves together the experience of life in the rapidly changing American Southwest with the peculiar journey of Don Juan de Oñate, who was dispatched from Mexico City in the late sixteenth- century by Spanish royalty to settle the so-called New Mexico Province, of which little was known. A letter that was sent to Oñate by the Viceroy of New Spain, asking that should he come upon the North Sea in New Mexico, he should give a detailed report of "the configuration of the coast and the capacity of each harbor" becomes the inspiration for many of the poems in this artfully composed debut.

Book excerpt: Russia has allied itself with the Islamic former Soviet Republics and several other Islamic countries. NATO has agreed to provide Israel with military aid. Many ethnic Jews from around the world have enlisted to serve with the NATO peacekeeping force to be sent to Israel, including a British national named John Ahasuerus. He is put in command of a platoon of NATO soldiers stationed in Jerusalem. Their commanding officer gives them a mission: reconnaissance flights over Jordan have been shot down and satellite photos are unavailable, so Ahasuerus and his men are being sent to the border to report on the troops massing in Jordan. As they head for the Dead Sea, the discussion turns from politics to religion to the Apocalypse. When they arrive, their discussion continues and is on his mind when he goes to sleep: in a dream he finds himself in Britain during the dark ages as a young man in search of his destiny at the time of King Arthur; he joins the Quest for the Grail and, after a transforming experience in which he learns much about himself, Ahasuerus awakens back at the coast of the Dead Sea. He takes over the watch—prepared, whatever happens, to fulfill what he now understands is his destiny.

Book Synopsis Alberta’s Lower Athabasca Basin by : Brian M. Ronaghan
Download or read book Alberta’s Lower Athabasca Basin written by Brian M. Ronaghan and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the oil sands region of northeastern Alberta has been the site of unprecedented levels of development. Alberta's Lower Athabasca Basin tells a fascinating story of how a catastrophic ice age flood left behind a unique landscape in the Lower Athabasca Basin, one that made deposits of bitumen available for surface mining. Less well known is the discovery that this flood also produced an environment that supported perhaps the most intensive use of boreal forest resources by prehistoric Native people yet recognized in Canada. Studies undertaken to meet the conservation requirements of the Alberta Historical Resources Act have yielded a rich and varied record of prehistoric habitation and activity in the oil sands area. Evidence from between 9,500 and 5,000 years ago—the result of several major excavations—has confirmed extensive human use of the region’s resources, while important contextual information provided by key geological and palaeoenvironmental studies has deepened our understanding of how the region’s early inhabitants interacted with the landscape. Touching on various elements of this rich environmental and archaeological record, the contributors to this volume use the evidence gained through research and compliance studies to offer new insights into human and natural history. They also examine the challenges of managing this irreplaceable heritage resource in the face of ongoing development. Contributors: Alwynne Beaudoin, Angela Younie, Brian O.K. Book Synopsis Boreal Forest Adaptations by : A. Theodore Steegman
Download or read book Boreal Forest Adaptations written by A. Theodore Steegman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters making up this volume are not just a collection of parts which were more or less on the same topic and happened to be available for cobbling together. Instead, they were written especially for it. We had before us from the beginning the goal of creating a synthesis of interest to students of environmental adaptation, but adaptation broadly construed, and to one of the world's difficult environments-the boreal forest. This is anthropology-but not anthropology of the old school. A word of explanation may be in order. Ecologists and those in traditional biological sci ences may find some of what follows to be familiar in format and in intellectual approach. Others of our perspectives may feel less comfortable and in fact may seem to be refugees from scholarship more of the sort pursued by historians. All that is quite true and rather nicely reflects the dualities and potential of anthropology as a discipline. We have always drawn strength from the arts as well as the sciences. We have more recently tried to identify biological templates for human behavior, and to understand the reciprocal impact of behavior on the human organism. Anthropology is a discipline, part art and part science, which is at once historical, behavioral, societal, and biological. No species has left a clearer path through time than has ours, and none has made its way through such a diversity of challenging environments. Determining how humanity has managed to do that is our goal.
