It is a play of strong passions, of absorbing human interest. But its indescribable charm is derived from the shifting effects of Nature's scenery no less than from the play and interplay of human action. Before, therefore, we embark upon the story, let us, briefly and hurriedly, survey the scene of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Burma IN this brief History of Burma I have tried to give a clear account of what is nown of the early period, together with some notice of the traditions which possess historical interest. From the point at which the records become trustworthy I have endeavoured to put clearly and concisely all that the young student should know, without burdening his mind with unnecessary details. I hope that a work dealing with a country which has received so.much attention in recent years from the traveller, artist, and litte'rateur, may not be without general interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leopard's Leap: A Story of Burma The good ship Devonshire of the County Line was making her way with sober haste through the tepid waters of the Red Sea. It was ten o'clock of an October night and the heat was tempered by a southerly breeze. The after-dinner promenaders had ceased their uneasy effort to get exercise without colliding with each other or with the chairs that strewed the deck, and had settled down to cards, conversation or the knitting of mufflers for the Indian troops in France. A few passengers here and there leaned over the side to watch the phosphorescent waters rolling like liquid silver from the ship's dark bows, or to admire the graceful proportions of the Unicorn, which they fondly believed, on the assurance of a waggish officer, to be the Southern Cross. It is very different from India, not only as to the general appearance of the country itself, but also as regards the people, their manner of living, and the language spoken. That this should be so is really not hard to under stand. Though joined by land to India in the north, Burma is separated from that country by mountain ranges which are difficult to cross. This has left the country shut in and isolated from earliest times. The pages of Indian history are scarred by the records of, Alexander the Great and other invaders, and the country and people have been influenced greatly by these various conquerors, yet Burma has been sheltered. It is a plain story of official life for more than thirty years. It does not compete with any of the books already written about Burma, except, perhaps, the monumental work of General F ytche. While pursuing as a rule a track of chronological order, I have not hesitated to wander into by-paths of dissertation and description. I could not write without attempting to give frag mentary impressions of the people and their character. As far as possible I have limited my narrative to events within my own knowledge my judgments are based on my own observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yachow and Burma: The Escape, the Return Sze-Chuen is the westernmost province of China, bordering on Tibet. The American Baptist mission in this province was opened by Rev. Wm. M. Upcraft, who had traveled extensively through Central China distributing the word of God. He encountered in this work many dangers - once, like Paul, being stoned and left for dead outside the city walls. The mission was begun in 1889, with the station at Sui fu. Kiating and Yachow were opened later. In 1893 Mr. Upcraft visited many churches in this country and secured reinforcements for the West China mission. Just following the Japanese-Chinese war, and possibly in some remote way connected with that war, uprisings against foreigners began in various parts of China in the early summer of 1895. At Kucheng, a number of missionaries, eight or more, were killed. The missionaries were not hated on account of their religion, but simply as foreigners. The literati and official classes stirred up the credulous mob. Our missionaries were all driven out of West China. Some came East, but Mr. Upcraft and Mr. Openshaw abode still on the eastern edge of Sze-Chuen, and after a visit to the mission, made their way through Tonkin and around by sea to Burma. They have since left Burma, and by the time this book comes into the readers' hands, they will doubtless be back again in West China and once more at work. The Burman cannot conceive of a religion without a Defender of the Faith- a king who appoints and rules the Buddhist hierarchy. The extinction of the monarchy left the nation, according to the people's notions, without a religion. We have overthrown the king and destroyed all traces of the kingly rule. Naturally they look upon this as the destruction of their nationality. Whether we have acted Wisely history will decide. The step has, however, been taken, and we dare not now go back. We have to govern a turbulent people inhabiting a vast territory of hills and plains, forests, jungle, and swamp, impassable to troops during more than half the year. Vigour, tact, and skill are much wanted in the administration.* But vigour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Among Pagodas and Fair Ladies: An Account of a Tour Through Burma The author of these bright sketches succeeds in rendering her subjects attractive even to those who are already familiar with them; and this is a kind of success which is not often attained. She came to Burma on a visit, and fell in love with the country and people at first sight. This accounts for the freshness and warmth of her colouring and her artist sympathy with the little things that concern the people. She has caught their quaint picturesque ways and pourtrayed them with fidelity. Text and pictures are true to life. I have enjoyed the little book, and so will all those who read it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burmese Wonderland: A Tale of Travel in Lower and Upper Burma Yesterday, while I was planning the arrangement of these pages, the relics in the Arakan Pagoda were seen to fly up towards the spire, and hang there, glittering about the crown. The omen is surely propitious. This morning a Burmese friend of mine, while bathing in the Irrawaddy, was seized round the waist by a Ye Bilu, or Water God, which would have dragged him away, had not the neighbours rushed in and driven off the River Nat. Maung Gyi himself has since confirmed the story. "My Lord has correctly heard the facts, except that the Ye Bilu also went off with my lungyi leaving me 'a modest man' to reach home in extreme confusion." There are two Burmas. There is one with Diarchy which is dull enough, but affords sport to quite a number of people. The other is half esoteric. It is just a Wonderland. Like Alice, you can follow a White Rabbit down into it with the pleasurable assurance of exciting adventures. Not long ago a little bird suddenly began to bet; and a giant mushroom, far larger than Alice's, caused a thrill of excitement.
