Book excerpt: Protestants have had a tradition of keeping their heads down since before Irish independence in 1922, and still have. Most of them have gone into Omertà. They had their own social networks, businesses, large manufacturing companies like Guinness and Jamieson Whiskey and schools and hospitals. But a few historians have taken the position that Southern Protestant citizenship has been indulged, rather than being a matter of right, in the Roman Catholic Gaelic state that emerged after 1921. So, we can ask, why did an estimated 42,000 leave to go to Northern Ireland, England, Australia and Canada between 1920 and 1926? In On the Margin, Robin Bury describes his lived experiences, and those of his family, as marginalized Protestants residing in Roman Catholic-controlled Southern Ireland in the twentieth century, and what it was like to be set apart, placed on the margin, despite being as Irish as their fellow Roman Catholics. The author recounts his early childhood in India in the 1940s, when his Anglican clergyman father had a post there. He describes growing up in Ireland, including his schooling at Midleton College in Co. Cork, St. Columba’s College in Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. He married an Irish Catholic woman and gives highlights of his family life. He tells of living as an expatriate in Kenya in the 1960s, where he was a teacher, and his subsequent career in export sales beginning in London, England, and then continuing largely in Ireland, apart from a brief stint in Toronto. He closes with his move in retirement to his mother’s native Canada. A self-admitted post-nationalist, Robin examines how a once vibrant and industrious ruling minority ended up being the subject of attacks and intimidation in the years following Ireland’s independence, and aspires to inform the Irish people at home and those in the diaspora about the harm that monocultural nationalism—which is spreading today in various countries—causes when people dwell on supposed past wrongs. Weaving personal accounts and gathered stories about various generations of the Bury family with a myriad of information and thoughts about the broader religious, social, and political norms of Ireland post independence, On the Margin is an engaging and candid memoir written from a rarely told Protestant perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the sedimentary and geophysical archive of glaciated margins is a complex task that requires integration and analysis of disparate sedimentological and geophysical data. Their analysis is vital for understanding the dynamics of past ice sheets and how they interact with their neighbouring marine basins, on timescales that cannot be captured by observations of the cryosphere today. As resources, sediments deposited on the inner margins of glaciated shelves also exhibit resource potential where more sand-dominated systems occur, acting as reservoirs for both hydrocarbons and water. This book surveys the full gamut of glaciated margins, from deep time (Neoproterozoic, Ordovician and Carboniferous–Permian) to modern high-latitude margins in Canada and Antarctica. This collection of papers is the first attempt to deliberately do this, allowing not only the similarities and differences between modern and ancient glaciated margins to be explored, but also the wide spectrum of their mechanisms of investigation to be probed. Together, these papers offer a high-resolution, spatially and temporally diverse blueprint of the depositional processes, ice sheet dynamics, and basin architectures of the world’s former glaciated margins; a vital resource in advancing understanding of our present and future marine-terminating ice sheet margins.

Book excerpt: The burial tumulus of Lofkend lies in one of the richest archaeological areas of Albania (ancient "Illyria"), home to a number of burial tumuli spanning the Bronze and Iron Ages of later prehistory. Some were robbed long ago, others were reused for modern burials; few were excavated under scientific conditions. Modern understanding of the pre- and protohistory of Illyria has largely been shaped by the contents of such burial mounds. What inspired the systematic exploration of Lofkend by UCLA was more than the promise of an unplundered necropolis; it was also a chance to revisit the significance of this tumulus and its fellows for the emergence of urbanism and complexity in ancient Illyria. In addition to artifacts, the recovery of surviving plant remains, bones, and other organic material contribute insights into the environmental and ecological history of the region.

Summarizes and integrates our understanding of sedimentary processes and strata associated with fluvial dispersal systems on continental shelves and slopes Explores timescales ranging from particle transport at one extreme, to deep burial at the other Insights are presented for margins in general, and with focus on a tectonically active margin (northern California) and a passive margin (New Jersey), enabling detailed examination of the intricate relationships between a wide suite of sedimentary processes and their preserved stratigraphy Includes observational studies which document the processes and strata found on particular margins, in addition to numerical models and laboratory experimentation, which provide a quantitative basis for extrapolation in time and space of insights about continental-margin sedimentation Provides a research resource for scientists studying modern and ancient margins, and an educational text for advanced students in sedimentology and stratigraphy
