The incidents which I have related in the last chapter occurred during the last year of my captivity. In looking hack upon this time now it seems to me as if, of all those dreary ten years, the first and the last had been the most remarkable, so clearly do I remember every trifling incident which happened in them. In spite of my intense desire to be free once more I began to find my life much less hard than it had been during the previous years. In the first place, I had succeeded at last in making friends with several convicts, who had finally arrived at the conclusion that I was not a bad man. Some of them were even sincerely attached to me--e.g. the pioneer, who nearly cried when my comrade and I left the prison. We had to remain in the town for another month before leaving the place altogether, and hardly a day passed without his coming to call on us, just to take a look at us, as he used to say. Others, it is true, remained cold and repellent to the very last, and hardly ever exchanged a word with me. In the second place, I enjoy etl more liberty during this memorable last year. I found out, by a mere chance, that some of my old schoolfellows were among the officers who were in garrison in the town. I renewed our acquaintance, and they helped me to the utmost of their power. I had more money at my disposal, was able to write to my friends once more, and, what was the greatest boon of all, they gave me books to read. I had been denied that pleasure for many years, and it is difficult to describe the mixed sensation of joy and bitterness with which I read the first book. It happened to be an odd number of some magazine: ' I remember sitting down to read it one evening, after we had been locked in for the..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buried Alive: Or Ten Years of Penal Servitude in Siberia Else he would not have asked him to teach his daughters, but that he was a great misant-hrope, and though he was considered very clever, and had read a great deal, he hardly ever spoke to any one, and it was most dificult to draw him into conversation. There were some people who even suspected him of being mad, but they would hardly have found fault with him for that. He was a great favourite with many of the best families in the place, and might have made himself very useful by writing petitions, etc. It was generally believed that he belonged to a good Old Russian family, and that he had many friends and relations still living; but he had resolutely broken 03 all communication with them. His history was well known. He had murdered his wife in a fit of jealousy, and immediately given himself up to the police. (this had considerably mitigated his sen tence). Such crimes are never judged harshly in Siberia, but rather looked upon as an unfortunate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Philip Ross Bullock looks at the life and works of Rosa Newmarch (1857-1940), the leading authority on Russian music and culture in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century England. Although Newmarch's work and influence are often acknowledged - most particularly by scholars of English poetry, and of the role of women in English music - the full range of her ideas and activities has yet to be studied. As an inveterate traveller, prolific author, and polyglot friend of some of Europe's leading musicians, such as Elgar, Sibelius and Jan?k, Newmarch deserves to be better appreciated. On the basis of both published and archival materials, the details of Newmarch's busy life are traced in an opening chapter, followed by an overview of English interest in Russian culture around the turn of the century, a period which saw a long-standing Russophobia (largely political and military) challenged by a more passionate and well-informed interest in the arts Three chapters then deal with the features that characterize Newmarch's engagement with Russian culture and society, and - more significantly perhaps - which she also championed in her native England; nationalism; the role of the intelligentsia; and feminism. In each case, Newmarch's interest in Russia was no mere instance of ethnographic curiosity; rather, her observations about and passion for Russia were translated into a commentary on the state of contemporary English cultural and social life. Her interest in nationalism was based on the conviction that each country deserved an art of its own. Her call for artists and intellectuals to play a vital role in the cultural and social life of the country illustrated how her Russian experiences could map onto the liberal values of Victorian England. And her feminism was linked to the idea that women could exercise roles of authority and influence in society through participation in the arts. A final chapter considers how her late interest in the music of Czechoslovakia pi

Book excerpt: Over the course of the nineteenth century Siberia developed a fearsome reputation as a place of exile, often imagined as a vast penal colony and seen as a symbol of the iniquities of autocratic and totalitarian Tsarist rule. This book examines how Siberia’s reputation came about and discusses the effects of this reputation in turning opinion, especially in Western countries, against the Tsarist regime and in giving rise to considerable sympathy for Russian radicals and revolutionaries. It considers the writings and propaganda of a large number of different émigré groups, explores American and British journalists’ investigations and exposé press articles and charts the rise of the idea of Russian political prisoners as revolutionary and reformist heroes. Overall, the book demonstrates how important representations of Siberian exile were in shaping Western responses to the Russian Revolution.

Book excerpt: "The House of the Dead; or, Prison Life in Siberia with an introduction by Julius Bramont" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a semi-autobiographical novel. It is generally considered to be a fictionalised memoir; a loosely-knit collection of experiences, events and philosophical discussion based on Dostoevsky's experiences as a prisoner, organised around theme and character rather than plot. Dostoevsky spent four years in a forced-labour prison camp in Siberia following his conviction for involvement in the Petrashevsky Circle. This experience allowed him to describe with great authenticity the conditions of prison life and the characters of the convicts.
