In this book we present fundamentals and applications of thermal convection and stratified flows. Buoyancy brings in extremely rich phenomena including waves and instabilities, patterns, chaos, and turbulence. In this book we present these topics in a systematic manner. First we present a unified treatment of linear theory that yields waves and thermal instability for stably and unstably-stratified flows respectively. We extend this analysis to include rotation and magnetic field. We also describe nonlinear saturation and pattern formation in Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The second half of the book is dedicated to buoyancy-driven turbulence, both in stably-stratified flow and in thermal convection. We describe the spectral theory including energy flux and show that the thermally-driven turbulence is similar to hydrodynamic turbulence. We also describe large-scale quantities like Reynolds and Nusselt numbers, flow anisotropy, and the dynamics of flow structures, namely flow reversals. Thus, this book presents all the major aspects of the buoyancy-driven flows in a coherent manner that would appeal to advanced graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: A new equation is derived for the motion of vorticity in a general fluid, including the effects of viscosity, compressibility, nonhomogeneity, and nonconservative forces. The equation holds, in particular, for vortices which may not move with the fluid. A linearized form of this equation is applied to tornado cyclones and to the twin tornado of April 11, 1965, near Elkhart, Indiana. It is shown that the displacement of tornado cyclones to the right of the mean tropospheric winds may be accounted for by the upward efflux of fluid from the cyclone into the jet stream. Also, the retarded revolution rate of the twin tornado may be due in part to an attractive "buoyancy" force acting on the partially rarefied cores of the pair.

Any chemical waste that is heavier than the receiving water into which it is discharged may act as a negatively buoyant jet. In addition, when water is taken from the hypolimnion of a deep lake or reservoir and used as cooling water, the temperature, and consequently, the discharge may behave like a negatively buoyant jet. Two existing jet diffusion models have been utilized to predict the trajectory and dilution of a positively buoyant jet, or a rising jet, and have been modified to account for the sinking effect. Twenty-four experimental investigations were conducted involving different combinations of densimetric Froude number, velocity ratios, and initial angle of discharge. Salt was used as the tracer, yielding a fluid that was denser than the ambient receiving water and facilitated measuring concentration profiles of the jet plume. The coefficient of entrainment, the major mechanism of dilution, was determined as a function of the densimetric Froude number, velocity ratio, and initial angle of discharge. The reducted drag coefficient was chosen as zero for both models since any other value would predict a trajectory whose rise would be less than experimentally observed. For all angles of discharge the entrainment coefficient increased with a decrease in the velocity ratio and with an increase in densimetric Froude number. Additionally, there was a marked decrease in the entrainmnet coefficient with a decrease in the initial angle of discharge."--Page ii.
