Book excerpt: This book examines the different areas of knowledge, traditions, and conceptual resources that contributed to the building of Max Planck’s theory of radiation. It presents an insightful comparative analysis that not only sheds light upon a fundamental chapter in the history of modern physics, but also enlarges our understanding of how theoreticians work. Coverage offers a deep investigation into the technical aspects behind the theory and extends in time the notion of quantum revolution. It also presents a full-fledged discussion of the combinatorial part of Planck’s theory and places emphasis on the epistemological role of mathematical practices. By painstakingly reconstructing both the electromagnetic and the combinatorial part of Planck’s black-body theory, the author shows how some apparently merely technical resources, such as the Fourier series, effectively contributed to shape the final form of Planck’s theory. For decades, historians have debated the conditions of possibility of Max Planck’s discovery as a paradigmatic example of scientific revolution. In particular, the use of combinatorics, which eventually paved the way for the introduction of the quantum hypothesis, has remained a puzzle for experts. This book presents a fresh perspective on this important debate that will appeal to historians and philosophers of science.

Book excerpt: Background: By the turn of the new millennium 84% of families in rural coastal Ecuador had difficulties to access health services. A health reform some years earlier to improve this situation had not been implemented. In 2001, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Foundation Human Nature together with a rural population established a primary health care center in North-Western Ecuador. A public private partnership with the Ministry of Public Health was formed. Services depended on out-ofpocket payments, restricting the poor’s access to care. In order to increase access to primary and emergency care, Foundation Human Nature planned to establish a community-based health insurance. In the meantime, a major health reform was initiated by a new government in 2008. It aimed at universal health coverage, providing qualitative services for all based on primary health care, while ensuring protection from financial hardship. The aims of this thesis were to appraise the feasibility of community- based health insurance in Ecuador; to study how rural stakeholders perceived the 2008 reform and its effects on rural health services; to explore the local population’s perception of the NGO in service delivery; and to measure the scope and describe the nature of perceived emergencies, the related health care seeking behavior and health expenditure. Methods: Quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to tackle the research objectives. Data collection for the health insurance study and the study of perceived emergencies was carried out through cross-sectional household surveys. For each of the studies 210 households were sampled with two-stage cluster sampling. Structured questionnaires were used with on the spot household interviews. Focus group discussions with local stakeholders were performed to explore their perceived effects of the 2008 health reform. The population’s perception of the NGO was also studied through focus group discussions, which were complemented by key-informant interviews with local stakeholders. Inductive qualitative content analysis, focusing on the manifest content was applied. Results: 69% of interviewees were willing to join the presented community- based health insurance scheme for 30 US$ per household and year. Attitudes towards the scheme were positive and 92% of interviewees stated they would increase their health service utilization with affiliation. The implementation of the 2008 health reform was perceived as topdown, lacking communication. However, the reform’s effects were mainly perceived as positive with free medical attendance and drugs. Increased service utilization was described as leading to a relative shortage of drugs and appointments. Access problems for remote dwellers were found, who were described of having to seek private care, also in emergencies. The NGO and its services were perceived positively by the population due to health care improvements in the region. The structure of the public private partnership was unclear, leading to dissatisfaction. Community participation was found to be rather weak. Perceived emergencies occurred to at least 90/1,000 inhabitants in the past year. Fever, traumatic injury and abdominal pain were the most frequent chief complaints. The first contacted providers in 57% of all cases were private for-profit providers, including traditional healers. Public health services treated one third of all cases. Health expenditure was found to be high and catastrophic health expenditure occurred in 24% of all cases. Conclusions: Prior to the 2008 reform community-based health insurance was found to be feasible in the study region. This financing instrument may have a role in the post-reform system, to cover services that the government does not yet sufficiently provide. The effects of the 2008 reform were mainly perceived positively, but an adjustment of the system is needed to improve the relative lack of drugs and appointments, especially for remote dwellers. Free health services may not be sufficient to reach universal health coverage for patients with perceived emergencies. Changes in public emergency departments and improved financial protection for emergency patients may improve the situation. The NGO’s role was perceived positively by the population. A lack of communication about the public private partnership and relatively weak community participation restricted the NGO’s full potential and should be improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tackles global economic and social issues from a perspective that may seem obvious but which no author has yet taken: that we humans are living beings. In today’s artificially globalized world, we have increasingly lost sight of our original humanity. Despite the serious environmental, social, and political problems we are facing, we cannot stop focusing on economic growth, efficiency, and liberalization. In doing so, we continue to make the world “slicker” and more unstable. This book identifies these conventional values and ways of thinking as the root cause underlying many of today’s challenges, and it offers the perspective of a “bumpier” and more organic human existence that provides a greater sense of traction and stability. The book begins with a discussion of global systems and structures, proposing a “world with two systems” to limit the effects of artificially constructed globalization. The second part examines the modern welfare state, outlining a process to revive democracy and social capital by making social issues the business of everyday citizens. The third and final part focuses on human well-being, emphasizing physicality and the Japanese concept of kata as keys to restoring our humanity. Rather than searching for specific solutions through specialized knowledge, this book makes use of the author’s broad perspective acquired through many years of public policy research and reform. It asserts that knowledge should be acquired through hands-on experience and in studies based on real-world situations, involving people at the forefront of society’s challenges, whether politicians, businesspeople, scientists, craftspeople, or farmers. In both its analysis of humanity’s problems and the solutions it offers, this book takes an entirely new yet utterly natural approach to steering humanity off the global economic superhighway.

Book excerpt: The first Sudanese civil war destroyed relations between my father and his father. The second civil war displaced, made me a refugee, and forced me to leave my country. Even though war robbed me of my childhood and forced the responsibilities of an adult upon me, I refused to let the past negative experiences determine my fate. In addition to the woes of the Sudans civil wars on my family, my story includes my spiritual, political, and economic journey. It is a journey from Atemyath to Jesus Christ, from the worlds newest country to a nation that is one hundred and fifty years old. The anguish consequences of Sudans wars and my religious conversion are nothing compared with the failed institutional systems in the Republic of South Sudan, which are, corruption, nepotism, tribal based polices and especially the civil war that crippled the new nation. With these, one is left with nothing but to challenge fail status quo under SPLM leadership whether in the government or opposition. The SPLMs Entitlement Syndrome within SPLM leadership, both in the government and in opposition has shattered hopes and dreams of South Sudanese since 2013.

Book excerpt: Bumpy Road: The Making, Flop, and Revival of “Two-Lane Blacktop” chronicles the genesis, production, box-office debacle, resurrection, near-canonization, and lasting influence of director Monte Hellman’s 1971 existentialist car-racing movie. Hellman’s unconventional choices for the film included casting three nonactors—musicians James Taylor and Dennis Wilson, as well as his girlfriend, Laurie Bird—in lead roles; shooting the movie in sequence from west to east on Route 66; and refusing to show the actors the full script, instead giving each his or her lines for the day. Before its release, Esquire put the film on its cover as the magazine’s choice for movie of the year and printed the entire screenplay, leading moviegoers to expect a crowd-pleaser. Audiences anticipated that Two-Lane Blacktop would be an action-packed car-racing movie and were disappointed when nobody won or even finished the race, no one got the girl, the two leading men barely spoke, and the leading lady was foul-mouthed and promiscuous. Universal Studios Chairman Lew Wasserman found the film subversive and refused to release it on video. Years after it flopped, however, the movie soared in stature, and it is now revered by such contemporary directors as Quentin Tarantino and Richard Linklater. It was included in the National Film Registry and was released on DVD and Blu-ray by the prestigious Criterion Collection and the highly regarded Masters of Cinema series. Author Sylvia Townsend conducts a comprehensive examination of the film, its reception, and the resurgence of interest it has more recently generated. Interviewing individuals involved in and influenced by the film, including James Taylor, Richard Linklater, Gary Kurtz, and scriptwriter Rudy Wurlitzer, Townsend provides an inside look at the cult classic.

Book excerpt: When I was going through an ugly divorce, and as my father was passing away, friends and family would ask, "How do you cope and maintain your sanity?" Of course I would get upset and feel the same pressure as anyone else, but I knew I must try to maintain my composure, so that I could work through my problems, and interact with those around me, especially the ones directly involved with the situation. At one time or another, every person is faced with some type of dilemma; even during your worst times and most unpleasant situations, you realize that there are millions of people that are faced daily with much worse conditions and situations than you are. I hope this book will be an encouragement to each reader, and give hope and confidence to believe and know that bad times do not last forever. Cultivate determination to work hard, and always do your best. God has given everyone some kind of talent or gift, and He will never leave you. You must never lose sight of the basic truth; even when life's road is bumpy and hard, remember that when you get to whatever hard time life faces you with, God will get you through it.

The author gives a vivid account of his first twenty years and the 'Bumpy Lane' of life that led to his future in an ever-changing Britain. The book presents a marvelous kaleidoscope of social history from the forties to the sixties, seen through the eyes of a very like able partisan! From the first page the author releases, with beguiling humour, incredibly bright sparks of intimacy and honesty, especially in documenting the very human relationships between the people he recalls. The book mirrors and reflects the social and technological changes that affected these very real people as seen through the eyes and experiences of a boy growing up in Bristol. The writer's style is often racy and he is always at the reader's elbow as he guides him or her along the paths of his childhood, his teenage years, and young adulthood.

We spend much less time with the inner life, that place of feelings and thoughts, anger and love, hopes and dreams. When we do spend time with the inner life, it can often be overwhelming and disruptive, taking over our lives with feelings of hopelessness and fear or with endless ruminations about our past and worries about our future. In the practices of this book, we learn how to make friends with our inner life, to reconnect with ourselves, others, our world, and with God. We learn to have productive conversations with three specific inner voices: our separated self who lives in a world of scarcity and fear, our connected self who lives in an expansive world of abundance and compassion, and the watcher who stands apart from all the conflicting conversations going on in the inner life. The watcher decides how then shall we live. With a little time and some practice, we can bring our inner turmoil to a peaceful resolution and live a life that is safe, joyful, focused, and filled with compassion.

Eva and Leo grow up together, sharing a sadly dysfunctional family life, but there are good moments and some heart-ending times. The summertime was the highlight of their world at Detroit’s Boblo Boat rides, the beautiful jewel of the city, Belle Isle, where families picnicked and swam at the beaches and rode across the Belle Isle ferry boat. The second part is Eva’s life and how the road leads to growing up and becoming strong in the face of sorrow and tragedy.

Book excerpt: Ralph, the boy with a dream, is not aware that his determination will be tested to its limits. The early thrills do not give him a clue of what's in store. Just when he thinks he's got it all under control he nearly hits rock bottom. He is about to pack his bags when experienced elders put sense into him, and he begins to see that there might be light at the end of the tunnel. Only later, some years into his adult life, he seems to have sussed out that it's not all hunky-dory and that possibly it might be a case of `the enemy within'. It still hasn't sunk into him that it's not about fair play but about a different sort of a game. Are there no rules to play by, or can some always play foul? Ralph unravels this mind-blowing tale of uncertainties and of life at the cross-roads in absorbing descriptions. `The story is a gripping tale of human endeavour and survival,' says an experienced Indian psychologist. `The situations described,' says an American journalist, `offer guideposts to Managers floundering at the deep end of decision-making.' `It's a double-decker inspirational package for training,' says a British educationist.
