Book excerpt: Understand the different types of upsets and traumas your child may experience—and learn how to teach them how to be resilient, confident, and even joyful The number of anxious, depressed, hyperactive and withdrawn children is staggering—and still growing! Millions have experienced bullying, violence (real or in the media), abuse or sexual molestation. Many other kids have been traumatized from more “ordinary” ordeals such as terrifying medical procedures, accidents, loss and divorce. Trauma-Proofing Your Kids sends a lifeline to parents who wonder how they can help their worried and troubled children now. It offers simple but powerful tools to keep children safe from danger and to help them “bounce back” after feeling scared and overwhelmed. No longer will kids have to be passive prey to predators or the innocent victims of life’s circumstances. In addition to arming parents with priceless protective strategies, best-selling authors Dr. Peter A. Levine and Maggie Kline offer an antidote to trauma and a recipe for creating resilient kids no matter what misfortune has besieged them. Trauma-Proofing Your Kids is a treasure trove of simple-to-follow “stress-busting,” boundary-setting, sensory/motor-awareness activities that counteract trauma’s effect on a child’s body, mind and spirit. Including a chapter on how to navigate the inevitable difficulties that arise during the various ages and stages of development, this ground-breaking book simplifies an often mystifying and complex subject, empowering parents to raise truly confident and joyful kids despite stressful and turbulent times.

Book excerpt: Stand Up, Fight Back is the story of little 9 year old boy in 4th grade being terrorized by bullies every day. It started on the school bus with verbal taunts by the bullies to all the kids. Everyday they systematically made their way around the bus teasing everyone. When it was my turn for ridicule, I tried to ignore them and hoped they would just go away. Eventually the bullies would push further and be more aggressive with their attacks to get a reaction. As they increased pressure, I would try to retreat further into my dark hole of emptiness to get away. This drove them more and more to hurt me. Eventually I caved and started to cry. It was a huge victory for the bullies to get someone to cry. As months went on the attacks became more frequent and also became physical. They would slap my head, flick my ears, punch and poke me. They would pull my shoes off and even throw them out the bus window. And the bullying made it's way off the bus and into school, the schoolyard and even out in public places. I couldn't get away. This book details the dark plight of bullying and abuse that goes on every day in schools all over the country. You hear all the details about how that little boy was systematically broken down into the darkest lows where his soul could go. I discuss the failures of the system along the way as I was being bullied. From the Bus Driver that saw it all, to the principal that heard first hand from my mother about how I looked getting off the bus being beaten to finally the bully's parents denying any wrong doing of their son. Many adults knew what was going on but none did much about it. I conclude the book with some details on how to fix this epidemic. It won't be easy and we'll never wipe it out completely. But we can take a stand against bullying, but we have to do it together. And we have to start now. The first step begins with the parents and ends with the child being bullied. Stand Up, Fight Back.

Book excerpt: Women today feel a constant pressure to improve themselves and just never feel like they're "enough." All too often, they live their daily lives disheartened, disillusioned, and disappointed. That's because joy doesn't come from a new self-improvement strategy; it comes from rooting their identity in who God says they are and what he has done on their behalf. This book calls women to look away from themselves in order to find the abundant life God offers them—contrasting the cultural emphasis on personal improvement and empowerment with what the Scriptures say about a life rooted, built up, and established in the gospel.

There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Together, they form a simple, unique, and sometimes contrarian approach to classroom management that anyone can do. Whether you're an elementary, middle, or high school teacher, The Smart Classroom Management Way will give you the strategies, skills, and know-how to turn any group of students into the motivated, well-behaved class you love teaching.

Bullies and Strangers: My name is G. A. Shannon. I've been teaching martial arts for the last 30 years. Through those years of training I've had some great experiences and I've been able to save many lives including my own. A police officer for the last 25 years, I work with and protect children and have seen many children become victims because they were not prepared. Once in a while I see kids who escape from bullies, gang members and kidnappers by showing courage and making the right decisions, but sadly there are also stories of children who never return home and are unable to escape from these situations. Many tragedies can be prevented if children learn some basic safety tips and self-defense techniques. For this reason I'm recommending this book to you and your children. At different ages the risks to children's safety changes. Some risks are constant, and some change as the child grows. While there is no guaranteed way to ensure a child's safety, parents and guardians must do what they can to decrease the risk. Parents and guardians are the key to children's safety and future. There are a few things that can be done to make our children safer. Parents and caretakers should improve their knowledge of safety concerns for their children when it comes to bullying and stranger awareness. Women may sense that these idols are hollow and leave them feeling unsettled, but where should they turn instead? In Cultural Counterfeits, Jen Oshman encourages women to reject the empty, destructive promises these idols offer and embrace something much more satisfying. Book excerpt: Bullies have been around for centuries. They are very prevalent in our schools today. Over recent years, we have seen and heard of the after-effects it causes in our schools due to violent shootings and mass killings. And over 160,000 children a day skip school due to fear of being bullied. Train Up A Child is a Christian guide to help teach what the bible says about bullying. Its defense against bullies is learning and practicing God's way of treating others; with love and respect. Everyone can be taught to respect others but it is an absolute commandment from God to love one another as He loves us. This along with tips on how to deal with bullies as well as how to handle bullying against you or someone you know is the key to ending bully violence in our schools. Parents should not only know the right questions to ask their children but the right answers to give them. Parents should know the signs of a child who might be experiencing bullying. Train Up A Child will teach you the signs of a possible bullied child, how to communicate with your child about his or her experiences at school and how not to be just a passive listener but an active responder. Train Up A Child is a teaching tool anyone can use to teach children how not to bully and how not to let the bully defeat them; all done through the Word of God.
