Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a retired teacher I want to share the origin and reasons why I am writing a book titled, Why Bullies Are Cowards. I was born and spent most of my early years growing up on a small farm in northwestern Iowa. I had to ride a bus to school and sometimes some of the big boys on the bus would tease me and take my stuff. One day they were so mean that I began crying when I got home. I told my dad what had happened. He sat quietly listening and after I had finished relating what happened he said, “I think it’s time you learn how to stand up for yourself.” He continued by saying, “If these boys start teasing you tomorrow when you get on the bus and try to take your stuff, I want you to stand up, look them square in the eyes, and in a loud, clear voice tell these little cowards, “Pick on somebody their own size!” Needless to say, I was shocked by what he said I had to do. He made me practice saying this a couple of times. He then responded, “Yup, do it just like that!” Then I asked my dad, “What’s a coward?” He replied, “Someone who must pick on others who are weaker, smaller or less able to protect and defend themselves because they are too scared to treat others who are bigger, tougher, and stronger than they are in the same manner!” The last seventeen years of my career I taught at the intermediate school level where I had to deal with bullying situations experienced by sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. I understood my dad was right. During this time I found that most bullying programs used ineffective forms of punishment to address and resolve peer-to-peer bullying problems rather than teaching students the “why’s, what’s and how’s” of what they must do to defend and protect themselves from being bullied. Why Bullies Are Cowards is intended to share with school personnel, parents, and community members that have contact with children the instructional materials and behavior management techniques I utilized to create a bully-free classroom environment. As bullying statistics and child suicide rates escalate, it is time for all concerned to step up and help teach children how to stop being bullying victims, perpetrators, or bystanders.

After four months of constant torment, including a beating in an organized boxing match, ridicule for reading his Bible, and the forced consumption of hot sauce in the cadet mess hall, he resigned. When Oscar died a year and a half later from tuberculosis of the larynx, his family claimed that the West Point cadets had killed their son by scarring his throat and creating a fertile field for the fatal infection. This is the story of the ensuing scandal that brought West Point under fire in the press nationwide. Investigations following Oscar's death would reveal a long-standing pattern of cruelty that had become inextricably identified with the academy, related to notions of social Darwinism and initiation rituals popular at the time. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate considered closing the Academy in light of testimony by cadets in two separate investigations that revealed cruel and sadistic practices. Distilling startling accounts from trial transcripts, contemporary newspaper stories, archival records and correspondence, this book exposes a little-known chapter in the history of West Point.

Book excerpt: “A much-needed critique of our national obsession of guilt over food choices…exposes the multi-trillion-dollar marketing and misrepresentation of food.”—Dr. David Samadi, urologic oncologist and world-renowned robotic surgeon IPPY Award Gold Medal Winner More than 40,000 products can be found in a grocery store—and there’s a lot of money to be made by those who use misleading marketing to push us into emotion-driven decisions or make us feel like every purchase is a moral or social statement. Food Bullying upends the way you think about food and gives you permission to make eating choices based on your own social, ethical, environmental, and health standards—rather than brand, friend, or Facebook claims. Michele Payn, one of North America’s leading voices in connecting farm and food, takes a startling look at the misrepresentation of food and sheds light on bogus nutrition and environmental claims to help you recognize and stand up to the bullies. Food Bullying guides you through understanding food label claims and offers insight on “the hidden world of farming”. Armed with science and a lifetime on the farm, Michele provides a six-step action plan for you to overcome food bullying, simplify safe food choices, and even save time in the grocery store. “Engages and enables readers to overcome their fear to make shopping, food preparation and eating enjoyable endeavors rather than a battleground.”—Leslie Bonci, MPH, RDN, CSSD, LDN, Kansas City Chiefs Sports Dietitian

And he made life very uncomfortable for Mickey. Mickey's parents had some helpful ideas, but Mickey found that it was easier to talk about loving your enemies than actually to do it, and brave words were often just words. But then something happened that surprised Mickey as much as Jack. And the unexpected result was that the ex-bully was once more a friend, and Mickey had good reason to be proud of his problem-solving technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Smart Classroom Management Way is a collection of the very best writing from ten years of Smart Classroom Management (SCM). It isn't, however, simply a random mix of popular articles. It's a comprehensive work that encompasses every principle, theme, and methodology of the SCM approach. The book is laid out across six major areas of classroom management and includes the most pressing issues, problems, and concerns shared by all teachers. The underlying SCM themes of accountability, maturity, independence, personal responsibility, and intrinsic motivation are all there and weave their way throughout the entirety of the book. Together, they form a simple, unique, and sometimes contrarian approach to classroom management that anyone can do. Whether you're an elementary, middle, or high school teacher, The Smart Classroom Management Way will give you the strategies, skills, and know-how to turn any group of students into the motivated, well-behaved class you love teaching.
