Book excerpt: Historical Archives and the Historians' Commission to Investigate the Armenian Events of 1915 demonstrates the vital importance of Ottoman and other relevant archives in Turkey for the study of the Armenian question. Historians, assisted by newly discovered or recently published materials, must continually reassess events of the past in order to achieve a rounder view. The Armenian events of 1915 are certainly no exception. This study encourages further engagement between the policy-making and the scholarly communities by indicating the continued importance of past records and documents for today’s pressing debates. In order to give a fuller picture, this survey also looks at some major relevant archival sources outside Turkey, including the state of archives of the First Republic of Armenia and those of the Dashnak Party. Yücel Güçlü’s inquiry sheds light on some of the British records relating to the First World War and its immediate aftermath locked at the National Archives in Kew, London, and he examines the special relevance of repositories in Moscow and St. Petersburg in understanding the Turkish-Armenian conflict. Güçlü assesses Turkey’s proposal to establish an international historians’ commission to investigate the Armenian events of 1915 and reviews in-depth the meanings and implications of the protocols of cooperation signed between Turkey and Armenia on 10 October 2009. By turning a modern eye on historical events, this study gives great and necessary attention to discovering the precise chronology, meaning, and development of the continuing negotiations between Turkey and Armenia.

In fact, there is a partial disconnection between patent demographics and productivity gains, but also the development of actors who do not innovate and who develop business models that their detractors equate with a capture of annuities or a dangerous commodification of patents. This book provides a less Manichaean view of the position of patents in the system of contemporary innovation. It first recalls that these criticisms are not new, before arguing that if these criticisms have been revived, it is because of a partial shift from an integrated innovation system to a much more fragmented and open system. This shift accompanied the promotion of a more competitive economy. The authors show that this movement is coherent with a more intensive use of patents, but also one that is more focused on their signal function than on their function of direct monetary incentive to innovation.

The major challenges for a firm to counter social issues come from both internal and external stakeholders. Thus, firms adopt strategies which, while meeting the stakeholder demands also ensure performance improvements. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is adopted by the firms to address social and societal issues while achieving performance in their supply chains. Supplier development (SD) by the virtue of bringing performance improvement is a core element in implementing CSR. However, research at the intersection of CSR, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and supplier development rarely give insights into the interactions between economic and social performance in supply chains.

The main aim of this dissertation is to bring three different streams of literature (CSR, SCM and SD) and provide conceptual and empirical insights while investigating the role of SD as CSR in achieving performance improvements. Firstly, a conceptual framework based on the literature review is proposed providing more in-depth comprehension of CSR in supply chain. Secondly, based on the previous framework, a conceptual framework focusing on supplier development is proposed adding to the understanding of buyer-supplier relationships and its impact on performance outcomes. Finally empirical investigations into the Dairy supply chain in India using the constructs from these two frameworks, provide insights into the role of SD as CSR. Thus, this dissertation provides insights into the management of social issues in supply chains and makes valuable contributions at the intersection of CSR, SCM and SD.

At the same time, governments issue advice urging people to eat fish for its health benefits. In the context of these problems and contradictions, how have governments, the food industry and ordinary consumers responded? The author shows how different types of governance and regulation have been used to seek seafood sustainability and food safety and to communicate nutritional messages to the public and with what effects. The book also presents a new model for understanding food chains which combines governance and power approaches with an emphasis on understanding the interests served and the resulting balance of public and private benefits. This shows that the role of state regulation should have greater emphasis in governance and agri-food analysis and that theories about supply chain functioning, including the part played by major retailers and civil society, should be modified by a more nuanced understanding of the role of standards and certification systems. Although much of the focus is on the UK and Europe, this book provides key lessons internationally for the governance of seafood and other agri-food supply chains. The book will be of interest to students of food policy and those working in the seafood industry or studying for connected qualifications, and more widely to readers with an interest in seafood issues and problems.
