Book Synopsis British Monetary Policy and the Balance of Payments, 1951-1957 by : Peter B. Kenen
Download or read book British Monetary Policy and the Balance of Payments, 1951-1957 written by Peter B. Kenen and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1960 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of the revolution in Bank of England policy resulting from the government's response to the 1954-55 balance-of-payments crisis, this is a first independent analysis. The author investigates the evolution of official thinking and appraises the impact of monetary policy in this crucial period. Peter Kenen reaches the unexpected conclusion that the Bank's orthodox monetary policies played a relatively small part in the redress of payments disequilibrium, and that its most effective weapons were its most heterodox. Finally, he proposes ways in which the Bank of England can better control the credit base.
Book Synopsis Advanced Econometric Methods by : Thomas B. Fomby
Download or read book Advanced Econometric Methods written by Thomas B. Fomby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its conception in 1975in a friendly tavern near the School of Businessand PublicAdministration at the UniversityofMissouri-Columbia. Two of the authors (Fomby and Hill) were graduate students of the third (Johnson), and were (and are) concerned about teaching econometrics effectively at the graduate level. We decided then to write a book to serve as a comprehensive text for graduate econometrics. Generally, the material included in the bookand itsorganization have been governed by the question, " Howcould the subject be best presented in a graduate class?" For content, this has meant that we have tried to cover " all the bases " and yet have not attempted to be encyclopedic. The intended purpose has also affected the levelofmathematical rigor. We have tended to prove only those results that are basic and/or relatively straightforward. Proofs that would demand inordinant amounts of class time have simply been referenced. The book is intended for a two-semester course and paced to admit more extensive treatment of areas of specific interest to the instructor and students. We have great confidence in the ability, industry, and persistence of graduate students in ferreting out and understanding the omitted proofs and results. In the end, this is how one gains maturity and a fuller appreciation for the subject in any case. It is assumed that the readers of the book will have had an econometric methods course, using texts like J. Johnston's Econometric Methods, 2nd ed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume extends and deepens our knowledge about cross-border mobility and its role in an enlarged EU. More specifically, its main purpose is to enlighten the growing and yet rather uninformed debate about the role of post-enlargement migration for economic adjustment in the crisis-stricken labor markets of the Eurozone and the EU as a whole. The book addresses the political economy aspects of post-enlargement migration, including its broader political contexts, redistributive impacts, but also nationalization of the enlargement agenda. It also covers the experience of receiving and sending countries with post-enlargement migration and its role during the current crisis. Renowned experts in the field study, whether and how post-enlargement mobility has enabled the EU to absorb asymmetric economic shocks, how it has affected the European welfare systems, and whether it has contributed to the sustainability of the Eurozone. The authors also evaluate brain circulation as a sought-after vehicle of improved allocative efficiency of EU labor markets and propose a policy agenda for mobility in an enlarged EU.

Book excerpt: Wages and Earnings is a review of statistical sources, both official and non-official, on wages and earnings in Britain. The non-official sources of data relate mostly to salary statistics, while most of the official data are produced by the Department of Employment. Topics covered range from wage rates and salary scales to fringe benefits and labor costs. The concepts of incomes, earnings, wages, and salaries are also explained. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with an overview of earnings as well as the concepts of wages and salaries. The next chapter examines three official sources of wage rates: Time Rates of Wages and Hours of Work, Changes in Rates of Wages and Hours of Work, and the Gazette. The reader is then introduced to the official and unofficial statistics on salary scales, as well as salary surveys and official sources of earnings. Fringe benefits, with the associated concept of total remuneration, and employers' labor costs are also discussed, along with historical data on earnings and its components. The final chapter evaluates the various statistical sources of wages and earnings and ends with a few recommendations. This monograph will be a valuable resource for economists and economic policymakers as well as government officials.
