Book Synopsis FEM Analysis of the Human Knee Joint by : Zahra Trad
Download or read book FEM Analysis of the Human Knee Joint written by Zahra Trad and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, numerous scientific investigations have studied the anatomical, biomechanical and functional role of structures involved in the human knee joint. The Finite Element Method (FEM) has been seen as an interesting tool to study and simulate biosystems. It has been extensively used to analyse the knee joint and various types of knee diseases and rehabilitation procedures such as the High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO). This work presents a review on FEM analysis of the human knee joint and HTO knee surgery, and discusses how adequate this computational tool is for this type of biomedical applications. Hence, various studies addressing the knee joint based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are reviewed, and an overview of clinical and biomechanical studies on the optimization of the correction angle of the postoperative knee surgery is provided.

Download or read book Read My Hips! written by Wolf Schamberger and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I feel twisted”, “I look crooked in the mirror”, “My problems have been going on for years”, “I have tried every kind of treatment” are commonly heard statements. Whether you have complaints or not, it’s time to look at your body alignment, given that the pelvis and spine are not properly aligned in 80% of us. Think of a car that has an alignment problem! The tires wear differently and the car may wiggle and wobble, eventually causing structural damage to the frame and steering mechanism. We are not so different. Unwanted stresses caused by malalignment can affect every part of your body. You may feel it, for example, as “low back pain”, a “bursitis”, “tight hamstrings”. This book starts by explaining how your pelvis and spine function when in alignment and what happens when things go wrong. It describes some easy ways to recognize and treat the three most common ways the pelvis goes out of alignment. Then it outlines the “malalignment syndrome” – the typical changes and complaints associated with malalignment that, unfortunately, often lead to unwarranted investigation, misdiagnosis, and inappropriate and sometimes harmful treatment. After discussing the impact on various sports, it provides a comprehensive treatment approach aimed at achieving and maintaining your alignment making use of appropriate complementary techniques and encouraging your regular participation to achieve lasting results.

Book Synopsis Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Applications of Polymers by : T. Cheng
Download or read book Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Applications of Polymers written by T. Cheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers continue to show almost amazing versatility. We have always known that polymers could be used for trinkets, toys and dishes. Now, however, we are no longer surprised to encounter these adaptable mate rials in almost every place we look. We find them in our cars, tools, electronic devices, building materials, etc. The use of polymeric mate rials in medicine is also well documented in previous books by one of the Editors (Gebelein) and by others. Likewise, the use of polymeric mate rials in pharmaceutical applications, especially in controlled release systems, is also well established. Nevertheless, the use of these ubiquitous chemicals is far less ob vious in the field of cosmetics, although modern cosmetic preparations rely heavily on polymers and this trend is certain to increase. This book brings together much of the basic information on polymers in cosmetics and compares this usage with similar applications in pharmaceutical and medical applications. Cosmetics, like medicine and pharmacy, dates back to antiquity. We can find uses of perfumes, balms and ointments in various old books, such as the Bible. For example, the use of ointments and balms is noted more than thirty eight times, and perfumes and related materials are cited at least twenty nine times in the Bible.

Book Synopsis Articular Cartilage Dynamics by : David W. Smith
Download or read book Articular Cartilage Dynamics written by David W. Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the anatomy and physiology of cartilage tissue in an integrated way. The emphasis is on how cartilage tissue functions and maintains homeostasis in a challenging mechanical environment. Supported by hundreds of references, the book posts new hypotheses explaining how cartilage adapts and achieves homeostasis in vivo, and tests them against available data. This exploratory approach creates a sense of discovery that the reader can join, or perhaps test themselves through their own research. The main benefit will be obtained by research students and professors looking to understand the deeper concepts that will further their own research, or clinicians (including health professionals and surgeons) who want to gain a deeper physiological understanding of cartilage tissue, which can then serve as a basis for more rational clinical decision-making they need to make on a daily basis. To help bridge the gap between basic science and clinically relevant joint disease, applications and interpretations of key physiological concepts are discussed in the context of osteoarthritis at the end of most chapters.
