Book Synopsis The Evolution and Significance of the Powered Bulk Carrier by : Roy Fenton
Download or read book The Evolution and Significance of the Powered Bulk Carrier written by Roy Fenton and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the first to detail the 170-year evolution of the powered bulk carriers which continue to have a major role in the world’s trades and economies. Their design and technological development is traced from the screw colliers of the 1850s which revolutionised the British coastal coal trade. The same engineering principles were applied to produce ocean-going steam and later motor tramps. By the end of the 19th century, the capabilities and economies of these ‘black freighters’ had captured from the sailing ship much of the world’s trade in bulk commodities. In the second half of the 20th century, the tramps in turn evolved into multi-purpose, dry bulk carriers. These workhorses of the sea transport commodities including metallic ores, grain, coal, timber and other minerals. Quantities of up to 400,000 tons are carried in the largest, specialised ore carriers. In a parallel development, applying the same technical principles produced smaller yet efficient steam and later motor coasters which came to dominate short sea shipping. The book concludes with a discussion of how the economies of transportation provided by bulk carriers have had profound effects on industrialisation, globalisation and the world’s economy, and discusses the environmental impact of these ships.

Book excerpt: This book, originally published in 1972, discusses the impact of technological change in sea transport on trade links, shipping routes and economic activities. A brief historical perspective illustrates the vital role of the sea transport in the ancient and medieval worlds and the influence of merchant shipping on British economic growth in the nineteenth century. The author then discusses modern trends in world ship-owning, ship-building and ship types against a back-ground of supply and demand. Of particular importance is the assessment of the role of shipping in relation to developing countries.

The book contains 11 papers from many world leaders in maritime economic analysis and will be of interest to shipping professsionals as well as to students of the field. Current Issues in Maritime Economics addresses three major areas of interest. First, contributors discuss the rapidly changing international context. Second, the relationship between market structure and the workability of competition is analyzed. The final area concerns the decision processes of firms in the changing shipping world. Individually these papers might have found their way into volumes on subjects as disparate as business finance, industrial structure, mathematical modelling or political philosophy. Together they offer a broad representation of both the issues and the style of analysis adopted by many of the world's leading maritime economists.

Book Synopsis The Common EU Maritime Transport Policy by : Athanasios A. Pallis
Download or read book The Common EU Maritime Transport Policy written by Athanasios A. Pallis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s there were two major developments to the Common EU Maritime Transport Policy (CMTP): the establishment of European Union policies on safe seas and on shortsea shipping respectively. This book critically analyzes and appraises these and other developments to the CMTP in this period, while also studying policy Europeanization. It focuses on both the economic environment of maritime transport and the interaction of policy makers and organized interests during the policy-making process, with an emphasis on the political dimensions. By developing an innovative economic model, the book examines the ways in which governmental and non-governmental policy makers and their ideas interact within the EU's structure and dynamics, and shows how these factors account for why, when and how the specific common EU policy has developed.
