Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,0, New Bulgarian University (Economics), course: International Business, language: English, abstract: This master's thesis will deal with the different market entry strategies of German companies in Bulgaria. More specifically, I will focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), since they do not have the financial strength and confidence of large enterprises and corporations, and it would be interesting to examine their behaviour when entering a foreign market. An overview of the micro- and large enterprises will also be presented in order to further support the statements made about SMEs. Through an empirical and comparative analysis of a report of the German-Bulgarian chamber of industry and commerce, I will give an answer to the question, whether is this even worth it and if so, what strategy would be most successful for them and what factors influence the most. The analysis will begin with a more global overview of international business and especially internationalization. The definition of internationalization, its meaning and its relation to entering foreign markets will be presented. In the third chapter, the term market entry will be introduced, as well as the different possible strategies and variations for this. The fourth chapter will focus on small and medium-sized enterprises - what exactly they are in general, in Bulgaria and in Germany, what are the main differences between them and the large ones and why they are important. After that, a legal framework of the situation in Bulgaria will be presented - the economic development of the country, its business environment, corporate law, forms and taxes. All this will be considered in order to get to the heart of this thesis in the sixth chapter - the empirical and comparative analysis and the results drawn from them. Concrete samples with German companies in Bulgaria will be used in the study. Several variables will play a role in my research such as location, type of the enterprise, market entry method, industry and market participation. Based on it, specific problems will be discussed and finally conclusions will be drawn on the determining factors of market entry behaviour of German companies on the Bulgarian market. The master thesis will end with a summary of the main conclusions.

Book excerpt: There are a growing number of studies establishing partial correlations between firm restructuring in Central and Eastern European countries and firm-specific variables relating to initial conditions, hardening of budget constraints, and corporate governance. This paper extends the literature on the microeconomics of transition by investigating the relative importance of integration into world markets as a determinant of productivity growth at the level of the firm. We examine detailed firm-level quarterly data on over 1,300 industrial firms in Bulgaria over the 1992-95 period. We find that shifts in the pattern of imports of intermediates - and reorientation of export production - towards global markets are positively correlated with subsequent total factor productivity growth. The analysis supports the theoretical findings in the endogenous growth literature that trade matters in increasing enterprise productivity.

Book excerpt: (3) Exports of unskilled labor-intensive products continue towering over other exports even during the current expansionary phase. The composition of top performers in EU markets indicates the shift toward natural resource and capital-intensive products. Bulgaria's export offer in EU markets has begun shifting toward more processed goods, mostly products of electro-engineering sectors. Bulgarian producers have made significant strides in information communication technology products and automotive parts. Trade in parts and engineering products has displayed strong growth. The returns usually associated with liberal reforms, that is, gains in competitiveness combined with a shift toward products in line with the country's endowments in production factors began to surface only recently. In contrast to the period preceding the second transformational recession in 1996-97, gains in competitiveness derive from corporate and industrial restructuring and not from subsidies. "

Will they represent new markets, new sources of low-cost labour, or populations taking every action and avenue conceivable to emigrate to the Developed Nations? Will they be integrated into the Western economies and political structures or lose themselves into defensive postures and pose threats to the Developed Nations? This new series is intended to present current analyses of political and economic developments and trends in this crucial part of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing globalization and Bulgaria's accession into the European Union (EU), the question how to improve the country's international competitiveness has become very important and urgent. The aim of the paper is to present the results of a research on the past decade's competitiveness of Bulgarian export-oriented sectors, enjoying good positions in local and international markets and having a high development potential. The first part of the article presents a comprehensive review of the concept of competitiveness -- its definitions, factors, and measurements at national, industry, and firm level. On the basis of the theoretical considerations, an empirical analysis on the current state of competitiveness of the selected export-oriented industries is performed. These include metallurgy, machine building, chemicals, clothing and textiles, furniture, wine production, tobacco, and food processing. The research answers the following questions: What are the major competitive advantages of Bulgarian export-oriented industries on the world market? What are their disadvantages? How did they change over the period 2002-2012, and what steps should be taken to meet the challenges? The employed methods of analysis are both quantitative -- calculating various production, trade, and price indices, and qualitative -- carrying out a survey among top managers of firms operating in the selected industries across all the regions of the country. Results show that the country's competitiveness on international level has gradually improved but still remains at a comparatively low level as Bulgarian producers compete mostly on the price, invest very little in research and development (R&D), rely on low labor costs, and produce goods with low added value. The paper looks into the specific challenges to competitiveness faced by different sectors and the implications of addressing them. In conclusion, it puts forward some recommendations for boosting Bulgaria's international competitiveness which are aimed at key stakeholders: companies, central and local government, and institutions promoting cooperation.

Book excerpt: In many countries, a sizable share of international trade is carried out by intermediaries. While large firms tend to export to foreign markets directly, smaller firms typically export via intermediaries (indirect exporting). I document a set of facts that characterize the dynamic nature of indirect exporting using firm-level data from Vietnam and develop a dynamic trade model with both direct and indirect exporting modes and customer accumulation. The model is calibrated to match the dynamic moments of the data. The calibration yields fixed costs of indirect exporting that are less than a third of those of direct exporting, the variable costs of indirect exporting are twice higher, and demand for the indirectly exported products grows more slowly. Decomposing the gains from indirect and direct exporting, I find that 18 percent of the gains from trade in Vietnam are generated by indirect exporters. Finally, I demonstrate that a dynamic model that excludes the indirect exporting channel will overstate the welfare gains associated with trade liberalization by a factor of two.
