Book excerpt: Built Up uncovers the roots of the global real estate industry in the machinations of a patron of Shakespeare, the merged lineages of business savvy women and men, startlingly innovative collaborations with the first English architect, and the radical explorations of other denizens of early modern London – and what those colorful origins mean for the practice of property development today. Uniting insights from the author’s career as an internationally recognized developer with meticulous archival research, this resource for scholars and professionals synthesizes economic history and the latest planning and finance literature. The result is an unprecedented effort to codify the principles and activities of real estate development as a foundation for future academic research and practical innovation. By tracing the evolution of property development to its earliest days, Built Up establishes the theoretical groundwork for the next phase in the transformation of the urban environment.

Book excerpt: The author of Men Explain Things to Me explores the moments of altruism and generosity that arise in the aftermath of disaster Why is it that in the aftermath of a disaster? whether manmade or natural?people suddenly become altruistic, resourceful, and brave? What makes the newfound communities and purpose many find in the ruins and crises after disaster so joyous? And what does this joy reveal about ordinarily unmet social desires and possibilities? In A Paradise Built in Hell, award-winning author Rebecca Solnit explores these phenomena, looking at major calamities from the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco through the 1917 explosion that tore up Halifax, Nova Scotia, the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. She examines how disaster throws people into a temporary utopia of changed states of mind and social possibilities, as well as looking at the cost of the widespread myths and rarer real cases of social deterioration during crisis. This is a timely and important book from an acclaimed author whose work consistently locates unseen patterns and meanings in broad cultural histories.

Book excerpt: The values of breaking load, elongation and thermal expansion of nine bituminous built-up membranes prepared by roofing contractors under field conditions and by technicians in the laboratory were measured at sub-freezing temperatures. The data indicated that the field-prepared specimens agreed favorably with laboratory-prepared specimens, although the samples from the field frequently reflected higher values for thermal-shock resistance than did their laboratory-prepared counterparts. The higher values were attributed to the smaller amounts of bitumen used between the plies of the field specimens. The results appeared to support the validity of the application of the 'strength-thickness rule' to bituminous built-up membranes.(Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fearing an imminent Nazi invasion, the British government interned 28,000 men and women of enemy nationality living in Britain in the spring of 1940. Most were Jewish refugees who, having fled Nazi persecution, were appalled to find themselves imprisoned as potential Nazi spies. Using oral histories, unpublished letters and memoirs, artifacts and newspapers from the camps, and government documents, We Built Up Our Lives tells the compelling story of sixty-three of these internees. It is a seldom-told part of the history of World War II and the Holocaust and a classic tale of human courage and resilience. We Built Up Our Lives describes the survival mechanisms relied upon by the Jewish refugees. Although the internees, imprisoned in Britain, the Isle of Man, Canada, and Australia, were adequately housed and fed and rarely mistreated, they were cut off from family, friends, school, and work--everything that had given meaning to their lives. Resisting boredom, anger, and despair, the internees made the best of a bad situation by creating education, culture, and community within the camps. Before and after as well as during the internment--in Nazi Germany and in Britain--educational resources and social networks were essential to the refugees' efforts to build up their lives. Equally important were personal qualities of courage, ingenuity, assertiveness, and resilience.

Book excerpt: The resistance of bituminous built-up roofing membranes to thermally induced forces is considered in terms of their strength properties such as breaking load in tension, modulus of elongation and apparent linear thermal expansion coefficient. The development of a Thermal-Shock Resistance Factor is described and values are given for three bituminous built-up membranes at temperatures of - 30F (-34.4C), 0F (-17.8C), 30F (-1.1C) and 73F (22.8C).The apparent relation between the values obtained in the laboratory and the observed performance of roofing membranes in service is considered. The utilization of the Thermal-Shock Resistance Factor in the reduction of potential failures of bituminous built-up roofing membranes in service from thermally induced forces is also discussed.(Author).

Book excerpt: Every guy is looking for an edge, some way to get single women his age to notice him more than they do now. Unfortunately, most guys have absolutely no idea what kind of body automatically flips a girl's attraction switch. Nate Green does. Built for Show is the first fitness book to address young men on the prowl. It’s not just written for them; it’s written by one of them. Green, who’s just twenty- three years old, is already a veteran fitness professional who’s been quoted in Men’s Health and Maximum Fitness magazines. Green offers four twelve- week workout programs, each with a seasonal theme. The fall and winter workouts add muscle size and strength that’ll show even under layers of clothing. The spring and summer workouts burn fat and chisel the showpiece muscles—creating a lean, cut, beach-ready physique. But Built for Show is more than just a workout book. It also provides: · Realistic nutrition advice to feed the muscles and starve the fat without breaking the bank or spending hours in the kitchen · Tips on dressing right, looking the part, improving your social status, and settling into your new lifestyle · Quick ways to assess posture, with useful exercises to fix flaws and improve self- presentation, no matter the situation. The detailed programs include over fifty exercises, illustrated with over one hundred original photos. Neither a weight-loss guide nor a body- building manual, Built for Show instead reveals to guys exactly what they need to build the body they – and women – want. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments play a major role in the development process, and constantly introduce reforms and policies to achieve developmental objectives. Many of these interventions have limited impact, however; schools get built but children don't learn, IT systems are introduced but not used, plans are written but not implemented. These achievement deficiencies reveal gaps in capabilities, and weaknesses in the process of building state capability. This book addresses these weaknesses and gaps. It starts by providing evidence of the capability shortfalls that currently exist in many countries, showing that many governments lack basic capacities even after decades of reforms and capacity building efforts. The book then analyses this evidence, identifying capability traps that hold many governments back - particularly related to isomorphic mimicry (where governments copy best practice solutions from other countries that make them look more capable even if they are not more capable) and premature load bearing (where governments adopt new mechanisms that they cannot actually make work, given weak extant capacities). The book then describes a process that governments can use to escape these capability traps. Called PDIA (problem driven iterative adaptation), this process empowers people working in governments to find and fit solutions to the problems they face. The discussion about this process is structured in a practical manner so that readers can actually apply tools and ideas to the capability challenges they face in their own contexts. These applications will help readers devise policies and reforms that have more impact than those of the past.

Book excerpt: Myths and misunderstandings about what happened in the Great Recession continue to hinder the American economy by making us afraid of the one thing we need most: more homes. Remember when mania led to a massive housing bubble? When Americans found themselves saddled with too many houses and were hit with the reality that our economy had been built on unsustainable borrowing? Everyone knows about that, right? What if that was wrong? What if, when we get down to brass tacks, Americans have been struggling to build enough new housing—especially in places where housing is in high demand—and this was true, even in 2005? Viewing the economic calamities of the twenty-first century with this central insight turns the conventional wisdom about our economic challenges upside down. The need for more homes has been the core cause of American economic instability and stagnation. Building from the Ground Up will guide you to a sweeping new perspective about the Great Recession and the financial crisis, which points to a brighter path for America’s economic potential.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the Tsunami intrusion in the lower plain in the Tohoku region and role played by the coastal and fluvial landforms in the damages. The land-use patterns and the recent urbanization has also been partly responsible for a risk level enhancement. The 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami has violently hit the coastal plain in the Tohoku and Kanto regions. The coastal geomorphology of these regions have played an important role in the impacts of this natural disaster. The authors introduce tectonic settings, explain and assess these different risks, and discuss future disaster prevention and mitigation planning.
