Book Synopsis Building for 21st Century Science by : Mitchell/Giurgola Architects
Download or read book Building for 21st Century Science written by Mitchell/Giurgola Architects and published by Artifice Incorporated. This book was released on 2013 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building for 21st Century Science examines how changing pedagogies in science education and research are reflected in the buildings that house them. The book presents case studies, with a Foreword by a distinguished research scientist, a Nobel Laureate specialised in the field of Genetics, and an introduction by Hilary Lewis, a well-known journalist and writer on the subjects of architecture and design. The Foreword speaks to the trend among the scientific community to engage in inter-disciplinary research in collaborative work settings. Examples are drawn from the work of Mitchell|Giurgola Architects and reflect the complex interactions among technology, diverse areas of investigation, collaboration and amenity. The book examines the critical role that architecture can play in synthesising them. Many science facilities were constructed during the mid-twentieth century, a period characterised by brutalist buildings that are often cold, inaccessible and inhumane. Laboratories in these facilities are not conducive to flexibility and change over time. Classrooms are frequently dark, organised for the sage on the stage and do not encourage group interaction. Many of these buildings have now outlived their useful lives and are due for substantial refurbishment or outright replacement.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Intersection of Science Education and 21st Century Skills by : National Research Council
Download or read book Exploring the Intersection of Science Education and 21st Century Skills written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-02-26 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An emerging body of research suggests that a set of broad "21st century skills"-such as adaptability, complex communication skills, and the ability to solve non-routine problems-are valuable across a wide range of jobs in the national economy. However, the role of K-12 education in helping students learn these skills is a subject of current debate. Some business and education groups have advocated infusing 21st century skills into the school curriculum, and several states have launched such efforts. Other observers argue that focusing on skills detracts attention from learning of important content knowledge. To explore these issues, the National Research Council conducted a workshop, summarized in this volume, on science education as a context for development of 21st century skills. Science is seen as a promising context because it is not only a body of accepted knowledge, but also involves processes that lead to this knowledge. Engaging students in scientific processes-including talk and argument, modeling and representation, and learning from investigations-builds science proficiency. At the same time, this engagement may develop 21st century skills. Exploring the Intersection of Science Education and 21st Century Skills addresses key questions about the overlap between 21st century skills and scientific content and knowledge; explores promising models or approaches for teaching these abilities; and reviews the evidence about the transferability of these skills to real workplace applications.

This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Openness and sharing of information are fundamental to the progress of science and to the effective functioning of the research enterprise. The advent of scientific journals in the 17th century helped power the Scientific Revolution by allowing researchers to communicate across time and space, using the technologies of that era to generate reliable knowledge more quickly and efficiently. Harnessing today's stunning, ongoing advances in information technologies, the global research enterprise and its stakeholders are moving toward a new open science ecosystem. Open science aims to ensure the free availability and usability of scholarly publications, the data that result from scholarly research, and the methodologies, including code or algorithms, that were used to generate those data. Open Science by Design is aimed at overcoming barriers and moving toward open science as the default approach across the research enterprise. This report explores specific examples of open science and discusses a range of challenges, focusing on stakeholder perspectives. It is meant to provide guidance to the research enterprise and its stakeholders as they build strategies for achieving open science and take the next steps.

Book Synopsis State Building by : Francis Fukuyama
Download or read book State Building written by Francis Fukuyama and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weak or failed states - where no government is in control - are the source of many of the world's most serious problems, from poverty, AIDS and drugs to terrorism. What can be done to help? The problem of weak states and the need for state-building has existed for many years, but it has been urgent since September 11 and Afghanistan and Iraq. The formation of proper public institutions, such as an honest police force, uncorrupted courts, functioning schools and medical services and a strong civil service, is fraught with difficulties. We know how to help with resources, people and technology across borders, but state building requires methods that are not easily transported. The ability to create healthy states from nothing has suddenly risen to the top of the world agenda. State building has become a crucial matter of global security. In this hugely important book, Francis Fukuyama explains the concept of state-building and discusses the problems and causes of state weakness and its national and international effects.

Using archaeological approaches to human material culture, this volume offers unprecedented access to the middle-class American home through the kaleidoscopic lens of no-limits photography and many kinds of never-before acquired data about how people actually live their lives at home. Based on a rigorous, nine-year project at UCLA, this book has appeal not only to scientists but also to all people who share intense curiosity about what goes on at home in their neighborhoods. Many who read the book will see their own lives mirrored in these pages and can reflect on how other people cope with their mountains of possessions and other daily challenges. Readers abroad will be equally fascinated by the contrasts between their own kinds of materialism and the typical American experience. The book will interest a range of designers, builders, and architects as well as scholars and students who research various facets of U.S. and global consumerism, cultural history, and economic history.

This book was released on 2016-01-17 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is one of the largest examples of U.S. public-private partnerships, and was established in 1982 to encourage small businesses to develop new processes and products and to provide quality research in support of the U.S. government's many missions. The U.S. Congress tasked the National Research Council with undertaking a comprehensive study of how the SBIR program has stimulated technological innovation and used small businesses to meet federal research and development needs, and with recommending further improvements to the program. In the first round of this study, an ad hoc committee prepared a series of reports from 2004 to 2009 on the SBIR program at the five agencies responsible for 96 percent of the program's operations-including the National Science Foundation (NSF). Building on the outcomes from the first round, this second round presents the committee's second review of the NSF SBIR program's operations. Public-private partnerships like SBIR are particularly important since today's knowledge economy is driven in large part by the nation's capacity to innovate. One of the defining features of the U.S. economy is a high level of entrepreneurial activity. Entrepreneurs in the United States see opportunities and are willing and able to assume risk to bring new welfare-enhancing, wealth-generating technologies to the market. Yet, although discoveries in areas such as genomics, bioinformatics, and nanotechnology present new opportunities, converting these discoveries into innovations for the market involves substantial challenges. The American capacity for innovation can be strengthened by addressing the challenges faced by entrepreneurs.
